You are a winner! In this packet, you will find all the materials you need to take your next step in competing in the Texas Academic Decathlon, scheduled for February 23 – February 26, 2017, in El Paso, Texas. We will be using electronic clicker software and devices. Mike Chiszar from Assessments DMC will provide on-site consulting/management and tech support for the testing. If your students have never used the clickers, you can access the training power point presentation by going to yisd.net, Explore YISD, Students, Click on Fine Arts, Click on Academic Events, Click on Academic Decathlon, Clicker Training Power Point.

REGISTRATIONPlease note that all credentials and team lists must be sent to our registration office by Wednesday, February 1, 2017. We recommend that an overnight express mail service be utilized to ensure that your documents arrive by the due date.

ESSAY – ONLINE - URGENTThe essays will be written online using a secure server managed by Enlyght (the same company USAD uses). Rick Hopkins and we MUST have your roster sent to us electronically by February 3 (hard copies to follow to Billye Lucas). Coaches will need to secure a computer lab for their exclusive use on February 8, 2017, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. CST for practice AND February 9, 2017, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the actual writing of the essays. A school administrator MUST proctor the exam. Detailed instructions will be sent to coaches as soon as we have received all team/student information.

TRANSPORTATIONWe will not be providing transportation. This area is served by one major airport. When making airline reservations, teams should allow a minimum of 60 minutes drive time to/from the airport due to ongoing construction on Interstate 10. Late afternoon arrivals will require a longer drive time due to rush hour traffic and construction. When making return air reservations, teams should not reserve a flight any earlier than 2 PM on Sunday.

TEAM MEALSFriday dinner and Saturday lunch may be purchased for $9 each. Saturday breakfast may be purchased for $8 each. Indicate the specific number of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners that your team will require on the enclosed Team Meals Request Form and fax or email this form by Thursday, February 4. Checks need to be received in the mail by February 11, 2017. No Purchase Orders will be accepted.

AWARDS CEREMONY


The AWARDS Ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at 9:30AM in the Coronado HS Theater. There will be an Award’s Breakfast Buffet offered at the campus from 8 -9 AM. Tickets for team members & 2 coaches will be offered for $7 each and guest tickets for $15.MEMORABILIAContestants and coaches (eleven total per team) will receive complimentary lapel pins. Indicate the number of T-shirts needed for your team, family, and school administrators on the enclosed form and fax or email this form by Friday, February 3. Checks need to be received in the mail by February 17, 2017. No Purchase Orders will be accepted.

There will be an on-site shop stocked with items from local businesses for anyone interested in purchasing local memorabilia, souvenirs or southwestern artifacts.

MEET

Student Dress CodeThe following student dress code will apply to all Texas Academic Decathlon contests. Team uniforms for both boys and girls are optional.

Boys: Shirt and slacks; shirt and designer denim and/or jeansGirls: Dress, skirt/slacks and blouse and designer denim and/or jeans.

Distracting apparel, including hats or any kind (except those worn for religious reasons), excessively baggy, torn or ragged denim and/or jeans, shall be considered inappropriate. If a test proctor, meet official, or coach observes violations of the dress code, the student should be given the opportunity to comply with the dress code prior to competition in an event. Once a student has been allowed to compete in an event, he or she may NOT be disqualified because of dress code violations.

Failure to comply with dress standards may result in disqualification from the event, the entire competition, and/or the awards’ ceremony. The decision of the competition coordinator is final.

Code of Student Conduct

The Texas Academic Decathlon competition expects all team members to conduct themselves in a proper manner while attending the Texas Academic Decathlon event. This includes all of the travel, hotel and sightseeing associated with their participation in the event.

Appropriate conduct of team members is the sole responsibility of the team coach/school administrator who has the legal responsibility of chaperone for his/her team members at all times. Students should be under the supervision of the coach/school administrator during all activities.

Inappropriate conduct includes but is not limited to:1. Being in possession of any weapon2. Damage to or vandalism of any property3. Appropriation of memorabilia from the competition site premises4. Use of alcohol or illegal drugs by students regardless of age5. Use of water pistols, water balloons or other creative missiles at the competition site6. Fighting, loud noise, or any other behavior which is disruptive to others at the

competition site

Financial liability for all damage incurred by actions of a team member shall be the sole responsibility of that team member and his/her parents. Failure to comply with the Code of Student Conduct may result in disqualification from the event, the entire competition, and the awards ceremony.

In case of any incident the Executive Director of the Texas Academic Decathlon shall convene a panel of three board members to discuss the matter and determine the appropriate action. Appropriate action may include individual and/or team


disqualification.

Dear ACADEC Coach,Congratulations to you and your team for advancing to the State level of the Texas Academic Decathlon.Attached you will find information concerning publicity photos and award memorabilia available. Please share this information with your team members prior to your trip to the state meet so that they and their parents are aware of these opportunities. Please print enough copies of the order form so that each student and coach is able to have their own order form.

Please note that your school can purchase a "Plaque Team Pack" which will include 12 small Plaques at a discount rate or a “Photo Team Pack” which will have 11 Photos and a Small Plaque for the school. A school check is required for this purchase.If you or your team members would like to purchase photos or plaques, you may do so at the time the photos are taken or before the meet by mail. The enclosed order form will provide you with information on what is available.We will be taking your team photo around the time of your speech and interview sessions. Your photo schedule will be in the packet you receive when you arrive at the meet. Texas State ACADEC Meet All teams participating in the Academic Decathlon meet will have a picture made of their team with coaches. These pictures will be used for publicity purposes and also as a memento to participants.

Plaques and photos may be purchased by the school or by individuals. The Small Plaques are 8 X 10 in size and will have a 5 X 7 photo mounted under acrylic. At the bottom is a plate stating team and members’ names as well as the Decathlon logos. The cost of the Small Plaque is $30.00. The Large Plaque is an 11 X 17 Plaque with an 8 X 10 photo and is $45.00.

Un-mounted photos will be 5 X 7 in size and will be enclosed in a protective folder that will also serve as a frame and stand for the photo. The cost of the photo and folder is $15.00.

Orders placed after the meet will be $20 for the unmounted photo and $40 for the Small Plaque. You may putchase a “Plaque Team Pack” for $325. This includes 12 small Plaques: one for each team member, one for each of two coaches, and one for the school. Or you may purchase a “Photo Team Pack” for $175. This includes 11 Photos and one Small Plaque: one photo for each team member, one photo for each of two coaches, and one Small Plaque for the school. A school check is required for these options.

Orders will be accepted at the meet. Photos and plaqyes will be mailed to the schools within six weeks.
