Background & Rationale Using the Microsoft Mobile Services Protocol (MSP) RIM Launched

Windows Live Email in June 2008

Because Windows Live Email credentials are being used for many

personal services (such as e-Heath records) Microsoft is mandated by

government law to ensure developer entities (such as RIM) talk to

    Hotmail via a proxy token

At launch in order to meet security requirements, users were required to

revalidate their token every 90 days by logging into the BlackBerry

Internet Email system with their credentials (email and password)

Based on partner and customer complaints, RIM changed the default

protocol for new Hotmail users to POP in June 2009. POP allowed users

to access a limited version of Hotmail without the revalidation

    requirement

Background & Rationale cont Recently, Microsoft and RIM changed the revalidation requirement on

MSP from 90 to 360 days and are continuing to ensure a simpler andsecure user experience

Because of these changes, RIM and Microsoft have agreed that all new

customers will be defaulted to MSP due to its better flexibility, improved

feature set and the ability to deliver email in real-time

This change will take place beginning regionally on the following dates:

    AP: May 7, 2010

    EU: May 8, 2010

    NA: May 9, 2010

Current users will not be impacted and will stay on their current protocol

Storing Hotmail credentials on the device:

RIM is working on storing Hotmail credentials directly on the device. This

will allow the software to automatically send the credentials - alleviating

the need for the customers to do manually.

This solution will be implemented for a future handheld release date
