A basic leg contains only 3 components: square pum- mel at the top, off-axis tapered leg, and foot. From here you can individualize the design with any number of decorative details de- pending on style and skills of the turner. The pad foot design brings a little more grace to a table than a straight, tapered leg but not as much as a true cabriole. The demonstration started by explaining how to determine where to place the offset center points needed to get the proper taper on the leg so that the ankle blends seamlessly into the back of the foot. The offset center spot for the bottom of the leg is done by deter- mining the radii of both the foot and the narrowest part of the leg (at the ankle). First, locate the true centers on both ends of the blank. Decide which face you would prefer to have facing out from the table. This would be the direction the foot faces. Subtract the radius of the ankle from the radius of the foot. Measure this distance from true center along the diagonal to the inside corner. Mark this location. The offset at the top of the blank is a fraction of the offset at the bottom. Divide the total length of the turned portion of the leg by the length of the pummel. Using the number divide the bottom offset dis- tance by this value for the off- set at the top. Mark the end of the blank this amount towards the opposite direction you placed the new center on the bottom of the foot. Tim Sabo demonstrated how to

“Turn a Pad Foot-Leg”, originally

published in Fine Woodworking

Issue 203. A basic leg contains

only 3 components: square pum-

mel at the top, off-axis tapered leg,

and foot. From here you can

individualize the design with any

number of decorative details de-

pending on style and skills of the turner. The pad foot design

brings a little more grace to a table

than a straight, tapered leg but not

as much as a true cabriole.

The demonstration started by

explaining how to determine

where to place the offset center

points needed to get the proper

taper on the leg so that the ankle

blends seamlessly into the back of

the foot.

The offset center spot for the

bottom of the leg is done by deter-

mining the radii of both the foot

and the narrowest part of the leg

(at the ankle). First, locate the

true centers on both ends of the

blank. Decide which face you

would prefer to have facing out

from the table. This would be

the direction the foot faces.

Subtract the radius of the ankle

from the radius of the foot.

Measure this distance from

true center along the diagonal

to the inside corner. Mark this

location.

The offset at the top of the

blank is a fraction of the offset at the bottom. Divide the total

length of the turned portion of

the leg by the length of the

pummel. Using the number

divide the bottom offset dis-

tance by this value for the off-

set at the top. Mark the end of

the blank this amount towards

the opposite direction you

placed the new center on the

bottom of the foot.

Example:

Diameter foot = 1 3/4”

Radius = 7/8”

Diameter ankle = 3/4”

Radius = 3/8”

Offset = 1/2”
