INTRODUCTION

Drive Test & Propagation Prediction software are the two methods that are used to check the

coverage area of a particular wireless system.

The purpose of Drive Testing (DT) is to test the cellular network in particular area to give the

real picture of the network’s performance on the field.

DT provides an accurate real world capture of the RF environment under a particular set of

network and environment conditions.

Drive Test Tools collect the information sent over air interface between the cell and the

mobile station.

CELL SITE BASIC

A Cell Site is a site used to create a transmitting and receiving point that can carry traffic in a

cellular network.

Cell Sites transmit & receive RF signal at a particular band & frequency.

Depending on location & traffic load, there can 1,2 or more number of frequencies/carriers

per site.

1C– 1st Carrier Eg: 5780 for WABA market

• 2C– 2nd Carrier Eg: 925 for WABA market

Each site has a Site ID which is unique.

• Examples: MDL00334, DVL02665

RF PARAMETERS RSRP• Received Signal Reference Power

• To measure coverage• Excellent: RSRP ≥ -80dBm

• Average: -90dBm ≤ RSRP < -80dBm

• Poor: -100dBm ≤ RSRP < -90dBm

• Very Poor: RSRP < -100dBm

CINR• Carrier to Interference + Noise Ratio

• To measure channel quality

PCI

• Physical Cell Identifier

• Sectors of a cell site are distinguished with PCI

Example: For the site MDL00334, Alpha - PCI 222, Beta – PCI 223 & Gamma - PCI 224

EARFCN

• Evolved Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number

• It reflects the center frequency of an LTE carrier ( for example 1.4/3/5/10/15/20 MHz carriers) but not take into accountchannel bandwidth

DRIVE TEST TYPES

SSV• Single Site Verification

Cluster Drive

• 2 or more sites

IFHO

• Inter Frequency Hand Over

• Frequency hand over from one site to another site with different frequency

• Example: 2C to 1C

IRAT• Inter Radio Access Technology Hand Over

• Technology hand over from LTE to 3G, 3G to 2G.

SSV

• SSV is performed for a single site:

• To verify coverage of a newly installed site.

• To verify several RF parameters like coverage, channel quality, interference, overshooting,

swapped sectors, etc. after a new site installation.

• To ensure there are no faults related to site installation or parameters setting.

SSV TEST SCOPE

To confirm the carrier frequency in use

• Frequency/E-ARFCN Check

To identify base station in use

• Site Name Check

To identify the cell sectors in use

• PCI (Physical Cell Identity) Check

To measure cell site received signal

• RSRP – Signal Coverage in dBm

• RSRQ – Signal Quality in dB

• SINR/CINR/SNR – Channel Quality Measurement

Stationary Throughput Test

Try to select the spot near to the cell site where you have Line-of-Sight (LOS) to the cell tower.

Make sure mobiles are camping on correct PCI during stationary throughput test, not changing fromone PCI to another PCI.

Verify RSRP & CINR are good.

Verify the stationary throughput test meet the following requirement for 1C & 2C; If not find theother spot near to the site with Line-of-Sight.

• 1C ( 10 MHz Carrier)

• Downlink Throughput > = 30 mbps

Uplink Throughput >= 10 mbps

• 2C (5 MHz Carrier)

• Downlink Throughput > = 20 mbps

• Uplink Throughput >= 5 mbps

DT GUIDELINE

PREPARATION

• Do not go to the field without a good preparation.

• Prepare the tools completeness such as maps, cars, sites data, know the area heading to.

CHECK TOOLS

• Check if all necessary accessories are working properly such as GPS, inverter, mobile phones, SIM cards, etc.

SUGGESTIONS

• Avoid to drive same route twice while collecting data.

• Beware of restricted area such as naval/military base, one way street, high traffic streets.

• Plan the routes such as where to start until finishing the route.

• Cooperate with driver.

• Pay attention of car speed.

• Create notes for special events and notify the coordinator.

• Make sure GPS is working properly; without GPS data, the collected data means nothing.

SSV STRATEGY

Try to start the drive from near to the cell site.

Verify all the sectors are transmitting properly with correct PCIs.

Make sure the correct band & frequency are being scanned in the scanner.

Make sure mobiles are locked on correct band & frequency.

Periodically check throughput for Downlink & Uplink.

Check RSRP values are good for the routes near cell site.
