The Office of Human Resources is excited to provide an opportunity for our student employees to
participate in Advanced Connections for Student Employees training during Tuesday
Choices/University Workshops this Fall semester, beginning on September 22.
Advanced Connections was developed with the intent of improving the quality of service provided to
internal and external customers of an educational institution, and Andrews University has been
offering this professional development opportunity to its faculty and staff for several years now. We
recognize that a significant portion of our workforce on campus is student employees, with many of
these students on the “frontlines,” providing customer service to many individuals here on campus.
In an effort to improve our culture of service, we are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for
student employees to attend Advanced Connections training! Topics to be discussed will include
buildling a service culture, overcoming barriers, effective communication, checking for customer
satisfaction, meeting service challenges and more.
Student employees wanting to attend Advanced Connections training during Tuesday Choices will
need to RSVP by emailing [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]), and they will need
to provide their full name, ID#, email address, and the department in which they work. Please note
that in order for them to receive the certification, you will need to attend all 6 sessions being offered
during Tuesday Choices. There are only 35 seats available for this training.

On Sunday, Sept. 27, at 2 p.m., the Howard Performing Arts Center will present its second annual Shop
Small, Shop Local: Small Business Showcase with a concert by Mirasol Quartet, the Gold Medalist of
the Senior Winds Division at the 2015 Fischoff Competition.
✏
Small businesses come with many perks—individualized service, the convenience of a location in your
neighborhood, and the money spent benefits your community. The Howard Center invites you to join
the movement of shopping small and local! Shop Small, Shop Local: Small Business Showcase is a
special opportunity to meet the small businesses in our community, learn about the services they offer
and products they sell, try out samples, receive coupons and network! The showcase takes place from
2–4 p.m. The first 40 people to attend will receive a complimentary Howard Center tote bag.
The Mirasol Quartet takes the stage at 4 p.m. This saxophone quartet from Texas Tech University was a
finalist in the Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music in
2015, and a national finalist and 3rd place winner at the Music Teachers National Association’s
“Chamber Winds” Competition in Chicago in 2014.
Founded in 1987, the Fischoff Grand Prize is an esteemed award given at the largest chamber music
competition in the world. As part of the prestigious honor of winning the competition, the Mirasol
Quartet is touring America’s Midwest region, stopping at the Howard Performing Arts Center along the
way.
Both events are free to attend. You can find more information at howard.andrews.edu

Student Musician to Open for Take 6Freshman flautist opens for GRAMMY-winning group
Campus News (/agenda/feed/Agenda: Campus News/) | Posted on September 16, 2015
By: Sam Fry
Andrews University freshman Alicia Dent is opening for ten-time GRAMMY Award-winning vocal group
Take 6 at Habitat for Humanity’s upcoming benefit concert. The concert will take place on Saturday,
September 19, at 7 p.m. at the Heinz C. Prechter Educational and Performing Arts Center in Taylor,
Michigan, near Detroit.
✏
Dent, who is from Canton, Michigan, recorded her first series of songs on 3ABN Christian Broadcasting
Network when she was 6 years old.
“I’ve been interested in music all my life,” she says. “My earliest memories are of singing the song for
children’s story every week at church.” A talented and accomplished musician, she can play multiple
musical instruments—including the piano, flute, clarinet, guitar and violin.
Dent attended the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts during the summer of 2014, where she
received scholarships from the Our Own Thing Musical Instruction Program, among other donors. Her
study at Interlochen consisted of weekly piano lessons, as well as participating in collaborative piano.
While there, she took jazz piano and beginning composition, which helped cement her interest in the
musical arts. Dent’s experience also led her to pursue her passion at Andrews University, where she
now studies music performance.
Her appreciation of Andrews University’s music program originated when she attended music
performances hosted by Andrews University when she was in ninth grade.
“I really liked what I saw and heard,” she says. “I felt as if I wasn’t getting something that was just good
for an Adventist institution—but something that was good overall.”
In addition to the music program, Dent enjoys the beauty of the Andrews campus and the excitement
that the University’s diversity provides. Worship choices are also important to her, as she enjoys the
musical aspects of worshiping with others. As a member of University Singers, Dent enjoys singing at
Pioneer Memorial Church, and looks forward to each performance.
Dent received the offer to open for the benefit concert due to her previous volunteering with Habitat for
Humanity of Western Wayne County. She has provided the music for many of their groundbreaking
ceremonies and their annual gala. At the benefit concert, Dent will be showcasing her skills as the
opener for Take 6—including performing a single she wrote and co-produced with her brother.
Take 6 is a critically acclaimed vocal group that holds the distinct honor of being the most GRAMMY-
nominated vocal group in history. They represent a unique sound, combining elements of gospel, jazz,
R&B and pop music. Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee Take 6 has won 10 GRAMMY Awards, 10 Dove
Awards and a Soul Train Award, as well as two NAACP Image Awards. They have collaborated with
many music icons including Stevie Wonder and Whitney Houston, resulting in numerous recordings and
singles.
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that builds with people in need
regardless of race or religion. Habitat for Humanity welcomes volunteers and supporters from all
backgrounds. To learn more about how you can support Habitat for Humanity, visit habitat.org. To

KALAMAZOO, MI ‑‑ Kalamazoo residents, merchants, pedestrians and volunteers did their part Friday to make the downtown alittle more communal by creating their own mini "parklets" ‑‑one parking space at a time.
Friday was National PARK(ing) Day, an annual global event in which citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarilytransform metered "parking spaces" into "PARK(ing)" spaces"‑‑ temporary public places.
That idea was born 10 years ago in San Francisco when an art and design studio converted a single metered parking space into atiny, temporary public park in downtown San Francisco.
Since that event, others have embraced the idea, "creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around theworld," according to the movement's website.
The concept is simpler than it may sound, and using a space for people instead of cars is a start.
Meg Gernaat, planning and development coordinator at Downtown Kalamazoo Inc., said Marissa Kovatch at Wightman andAssociate, an architecture and design firm in in Benton Harbor, coordinated this year's pilot in Kalamazoo and events in othercities in Southwest Michigan.
Working with volunteers from Andrews University, Kovatch helped create inviting street‑side spots in front of Taco Bob's, Sticksand Stones and Down Dog Yoga Center. In future years, spots on side streets may be added if they are appropriate for reclaiming,Gernaat said, but with this year's quick turnaround for participation, there were safety concerns that require more time forreview.
Individual or rogue parking space land grabs are discouraged for the same reason, she said.
Kovatch said the themes of Park and Chat, Park and Play and Park and Lounge, invite passersby to participate. They may alsoprovide ideas about open spaces that will help the city plan. "We are using this as a platform to reach out to the community togather feedback about creating comfortable places for people," she said.

The event takes place around the world on the third Friday in September, she said. Kristen Fiore, owner of Down Dog Yoga Centerat 316 Kalamazoo Mall, said she first heard about the idea at a conference last year about the importance of open space in cities, places where art and creativity can create awareness of community. It's about thinking outside the box—in this case, from inside the "box" of a parking space, she said. For two hours Friday, Fiore, her staff and others who happened by used three designated parking spaces in the block — equippedwith yoga mats and seats — for yoga, meditation, or as part of the Park and Lounge concept, she said.
Is she worried about annoying her patrons by tying up prime parking near her center?
Not really, since there are ample other parking options downtown, such as the parking ramps and smart phone apps for meteredparking, she said.
Raising awareness of those options may be a useful offshoot of the day, she said.

The Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center is offering a free seminar, “Lose Weight…Find
Health.” The seminar will be presented from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 7, at the
Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center at Lakeland Medical Suites, 42 N. St. Joseph St., Niles.
Michael Schuhknecht, DO, one of Michigan’s most experienced bariatric surgeons and Medical Director
of the Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center, will discuss programs available for losing weight
and maintaining a healthy weight for years to come. The Lakeland Comprehensive Weight Loss Center
specializes in working with each person to create a customized lifestyle plan, including medical weight
loss management through diet or bariatric surgery, nutrition counseling, individualized exercise
programs, and monthly support groups.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, about 190 million adults in the United States
are overweight and obese. Individuals more than 40% overweight are twice as likely to die prematurely
as someone of average weight. However, the good news is that losing as little as 5-15% of your initial
body weight can reduce your risk of diabetes and other illnesses, and can even eliminate your need for
some medications.
