Making Something to Remember… The making of our War Memorial .

Menzies has a new attraction in town that came

just in time for the ANZAC Day 2016 Dawn

Service. Artist George Dohamidy was

contracted to paint a mural on the outside of the

Shire Building.

George and his father George Snr arrived on

Sunday 10 April, and set to work that very

evening.

George projected an image onto the wall which

enabled him to stencil the picture.

Over the next three days layer upon layer of

spray paint unveiled a masterpiece that attracts

people to not only stop in Menzies, but to pay

their respects to those that fought for the life we

know today. Many thanks go to the Shire, Acting CEO

Pascoe Durtanovich for arranging this amazing

backdrop to our now complete memorial and

Shire staff for their efforts to make this

happen.

The memorial includes Honour Rolls for WWI

and WWII with the names of those who were

born in Menzies or were residents at the time

of their enlistment.

Over the coming days stonemasons installed

the Honour Rolls as well as the bust of Private

James ‘Jim’ Brennan OAM, 2/28 Battalion.

Staff from the Shire Works

Department worked hard to install the

flag poles ready for the service and

finally completed it all ready to go by

Friday 22 April.

Since the installation there have been

many stopping to take their photo with

this work of art. It’s a beautiful addition

and a great way to keep the memory

alive and to honour those who

sacrificed their lives for us.

MENZIES REMEMBERS THE ANZACS Anzac Day Dawn Service and Breakfast

The ANZAC Day Dawn Service was held at the Menzies War Memorial 25 April 2016 at

6.00am. 39 people attended the service with the Shire President Jill Dwyer as Master of

Ceremony.

Readings were given by Les Taylor, Laura Dwyer and Dennis Kennedy Principle of the

Menzies Community School. Flag Marshall duties were conducted by St John Ambulance

Volunteers Debbie Pianto and Les Taylor. Fresh floral wreaths from Daphne Florist in

Kalgoorlie were laid by Veteran Christopher Deavin, MCS Teacher Anne Sheehan and The

Menzies Shire Acting CEO Pascoe Durtanovich.

Following the service, 37 people attended the breakfast provided by the Shire. The Menzies

Hotel kindly donated the rum for people to have a ‘nip’ in their coffee as is tradition on

ANZAC Day, and The Kookynie Volunteers Association provided the bain-marie for the

breakfast.

A total of $99.65 was raised for the Leonora RSL and many thanks to those who

volunteered their time and efforts to make this event happen. It’s wonderful to see

members of our community and those passing pay their respects.

Mother’s Day 2016 Mother’s Day is fast approaching and it’s a day for celebrating the one

who gave us life or the special women who have cared for us and we have

that maternal bond with. So in time for Mother’s Day preparation, here

are some suggestions so that you can make the most of her on May 8.

Make her a card.

Take the time to prepare your Mother’s favourite meal.

Offer to do extra chores around the house.

Draw a picture for her of the two of you.

Make her breakfast in bed and a nice cup of tea.

Pick a fresh flower just for her.

Write her a poem or story about something special she has done for

you.

Mother’s Day isn’t about an expensive present or money spent, it’s about

showing your love and appreciation. It’s also about taking the time to stop

and think about your Mother, Grandmother or a woman you have a

maternal bond with.

We’d like to hear about your Mother’s Day, so send us your pictures and

stories from Mother’s Day and they will appear in the June edition of the

Menzies Matters.

Send your entries to [email protected] or call into the

Menzies CRC at the Lady Shenton.

Henry Lawson’s Letter to the “Bulletin” re

Drinking 1903

Dear Bulletin,

I’m awfully surprised to find myself sober.

And, being sober, I take up my pen to write a few

lines, hoping they will find you as well as I am at pre-

sent.

I want to know a few things. In the first place: Why

does a man get drunk? There seems to be no excuse

for it. I get drunk because I’m in trouble, and I get

drunk because I’ve got out of it.

I get drunk because I am sick, or have corns, or the

toothache: and I get drunk because I’m feeling well

and grand. I got drunk because I was rejected; and I

got awfully drunk the night I was accepted. And, mind you, I don’t like to get drunk at all, because I don’t

enjoy it much, and suffer hell afterwards.

I’m always far better and happier when I’m sober, and

tea tastes better than beer. But I get drunk when I

feel that I want a drink, and I get drunk when I don’t.

I get drunk because I had a row last night and made a

fool of myself and it worries me, and when things are

fixed up I get drunk to celebrate it. And, mind you,

I’ve got no craving for drink. I get drunk because I’m

frightened about things, and because I don’t care a

damn. Because I’m hard up and because I’m flush.

And, somehow, I seem to have better luck when I’m

drunk. I don’t think the mystery of drunkenness will

ever be explained until all things are explained, and

that will be never.

A friend says that we don’t drink to feel happier, but

to feel less miserable. But I don’t

feel miserable when I’m straight.

Perhaps I’m no t perfectly sober just

now, after all. I’ll go and get a drink,

and write again later.

Henry Lawson
