• Communication is essential for humans • Relatively many people have challenges with speech and text production

• E.g. Speech might be difficult to understand • Or challenges in writing letter-by-letter

Motivation

2.6.2014

Page 20: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems are tools that help communicating

AAC systems

2.6.2014 4

Page 21: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Modern AAC devices can have voice output • They are often expensive, obtrusive and difficult to carry • They are also “local”

solutions only

AAC systems

2.6.2014 5

Page 22: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Affordable

• Always with you

• Makes you feel good

•  Leverages the existing capabilities that smartphones provide

Vision

Page 23: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

Design drivers

29.5.2014 25

• Easy to use • Simplicity over efficiency • The application must not require an ecosystem to benefit the user • Redundant communication – voice, images and text for elements • The UI must have a modern look and feel

Page 24: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

The team

• MS Devices and Services (Espoo)

• The Finnish Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (FAIDD)

• Leadin

•  Broad range of professionals working with end users have been involved in all phases during the design process

Questions • Are we solving the right problems?

• Is the concept understandable and easy to use for target users?

• Is there something crucial we have not thought about?

Challenges • Expressing the solution

• Communication and getting feedback

• Environment and test set-up

Questions and challenges

2.6.2014 10

Page 28: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Test materials, questions and feedback forms were simplified • Test length and practicalities were adjusted

•  Support persons present in the test sessions with some users

• Test facilities were familiar • Emphasized introduction to the theme to encage users

Test situation adjustments

2.6.2014 11

Page 29: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Instead a paper prototype, a demo running on a Lumia 925 • The demo included the most important flows and views • Also TTS (screen reader) was included in some parts of the demo

Communicating the concept

12

Page 30: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

Test sessions

• One session lasted approximately 30 minutes.

• It consisted of background interview, test tasks and post-test evaluation.

• The test tasks included all the main use cases using the prototype

• Recruiting was done in co-operation with FAIDD / Tikoteekki

29.5.2014 13

Page 31: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

• Test users perceived the concept as needed and exciting, making communication and mobile phone usage easier. Also coolness aspect was much appreciated J

• Users learned the main functionalities of the application during the test session.

• The concept main views were simple,

clear and easy to use. Large and clear icons and buttons were easy to see, recognise and hit.

• Those users who are used to communicate with symbols, could quickly learn how to use the symbol categories.

• Buttons with icons text is a good combination for this target group.

Some findings from the study

14

Page 32: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

Some issues found in the study

• Most problems related to the usage of a touch screen device – modern devices are “full of screen”

• Some complexity had crept in …

• Some of our “pet features” like dynamic input was too complicated and did not provide enough added value

15

Page 33: Microsoft Accessibility & Symbol Messenger

•  Some darlings got killed – app got simpler!

•  Navigation between symbol tables was changed

•  Insights to how the device was held on hand inspired new ideas and separate project

Some changes based on the test

• The application will be piloted with 3-4 user groups containing users from demographics

• The application will be used for longer term in everyday life

• The feedback will be collected in several checkpoints

Study phases • Kick Off • Piloting phase • Wrap Up • Analysis and reporting

Next steps: pilot
