MODE key to go back to measurement mode.

4.1 pH Calibration

The instrument provides multi-point standard buffer solution calibration. You may decide how many points to calibrate the measurement system.(up to 5-point) The principle is according to “Method of Least Squares”. Apply linear regression to calibration the electrode’s slope and zero point (Asy, Offset or Zero point). When calibrating a electrode, you may calibrate 1 to 5 point by any sequence to provide linear regression for mV and pH multi-calibration of a electrode, and to show the electrode’s slope and zero point(Asy, offset or Zero point) at 25C. The electrode’s slope rate which is actual slope divided by theoretical slope and the sensitivity shows in percentage in the display. In addition, the display shows the linear regression determination coefficient, R2, of the electrode and buffer solution to provide you an estimation of an electrode’s regression suitability. According to different combination of standard buffers, the TECH, NIST, Any buffer solution calibration modes are provided. 4.1.1 TECH mode (up to 3 points calibration), CT

The electrode is automatically calibrated according to built-in pH4.01, pH7.00, pH10.00 Tech standard buffers. The range of zero point and slope of the electrode is also determined. If one of them is over the range, the display shows error message of zero point and slope failure. (See appendix Table 1, pH/temperature table of TECH standard buffers)

4.1.2 NIST mode (up to 5 points calibration), CN

The electrode is automatically calibrated according to pH value and temperature of NIST standard buffers.(Built-in 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 9.18, 12.45 NIST standard buffer calibration set) The range of zero point and slope of the electrode is also determined. If one of them is over the range, the display shows error message of zero point and slope failure. (See appendix Table 2, pH/temperature table of NIST standard buffers)

4.1.3 Any buffer mode (up to 5 points calibration), CA

to theoretic slope and the temperature of standard solutions, the display shows a approximate pH value. Then, you can calibrate the electrode by freely adjust the pH value as those of the standard solutions’. There is not a zero point range failure determination by the instrument but only the slope range determination. If the slope is over the range, the display shows error message of slope failure.

4.1.4 Define Buffers mode(up to 5 points calibration), CD

There is a factory default 5 buffer standard solutions pH/temperature table which may be modified and saved by users. When users have their own buffer solutions, they may create or modify the data sheet and then save it in the memory of transmitter. Under this calibration mode, the sensor does not do the zero-point calibration and slope range determination. (See appendix Table 3, pH/temperature table of define(built-in) standard buffers.)

4.1.5 Definition of calibration parameter

You can calibrate the electrode by one point or up to three points of standard solutions by any sequence. As different calibration point method is applied, the definition of the zero point and slope different.

4.7 ION concentration calibration (SP-2500 only) The instrument applies the easiest and widely used ion-selective electrode

direct potentiometry—ISE, to measure the potential reaction of the solution. Establishing the relationship of ion concentration(activity) and electrode potential by calibration, the instrument then is able to start measurement. The measurement and calibration of electrode is necessary to refer to the operation manual of ION selective electrodes(ISE).

The method of calibration standard solution usually applies continuous dilution from high concentration standard solution in sequence to get 1000, 100, 10, 1 ppm(mg/l). In order to prevent from the difference of ISE activity and actual concentration, it is usually necessary to add ISAB (Ionic Strength Adjustment Buffer) when calibration for making the sample solution has similar ionic strength.

It is recommended to use the calibration standard solution from low to high to prevent contamination of standard solution. If the concentration range of sample solution is known, it should be applied the nearest value of standard solution for calibration. If the sample measurement range and the standard solution calibration range have been confirmed to be in the linear range of the electrode, it is acceptable to make dual points calibration. However, making three of more points calibration can help to confirm whether the measurement is within the linear range or not.

The calibration is up to 5 points calibration, and the instrument provides “log(A) = the logarithm of the activity of the measured ion” of linear regression calculation for the electrode potential(mV) and ion concentration(activity). It measures and displays the electrode’s slope under 25 C and the ratio of electrode actual slope with theoretical slope. It also displays the percentage of electrode sensitivity for judgment whether electrode is aged or contaminated. It also displays the linear regression R2 value (determination coefficient) of electrode and standard solution as the judgment of electrode regression suitability.

Because the calibration slope is related the temperature, the measurement is compensated with temperature value. However, it is better to measure the standard solution and sample solution within ±2˚Ctemperature difference.

The definition of electrode slope determination:

Slope The number of valence 48 ~ 70 +1 monovalent ion

-48 ~ -70 -1 monovalent ion 24 ~ 35 +2 ion

-24 ~ -35 -2 ion Note: If over range, the error message of slope failure is E-02.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Battery Replacement a. Turn off the instrument power first.

b. Open the battery cover, and remove the old batteries.

c. Put into the new AA batteries, and close the battery cover.

6.2 Electrode clean and maintenance

Generally speaking, under normal operation, the transmitter produced by our company needs no maintenance expect regular cleaning and calibration of the electrode to ensure accurate and stable measurement and system operation.

The cleaning cycle for the electrode depends on the pollution degree of the measurement sample. Normally, it is recommended to make weekly cleaning. The following chart gives introductions of different cleaning methods according to different type of contaminations to provide the operators with reference for cleaning and maintenance.

Type of Contaminations Cleaning methods

Measuring solutions containing proteins. Contamination of the junction

The electrode should be soaked in Pepsin/HCl for several hours. METTLER-TOLEDO 9891 Electrode Cleaner is recommended.

Measuring solution containing sulfides. The junction becomes black

The junction should be soaked in Thiourea/HCl solution until being bleached. METTLER-TOLEDO 9892 Electrode Cleaner is recommended.

Contamination by grease or organic substance

Short rinsing of the electrode with acetone and ethanol.

Acid and alkaline soluble contaminations

Rinsing the electrode with 0.1mol/l NaOH or 0.1mol/l HCl for a few minutes.

Apply clean water to flash the electrode after above cleaning steps and immerse the electrode in 3M KCl solution for 15 minutes at least, and then calibrate the electrode.

The electrode should only be rinsed and never rubbed or mechanically cleaned, since this would lead to electrostatic charges. This could cause an increase in the response time.

In cleaning the platinum electrode, the platinum ring of the electrode can be rubbed gently with a wet soft piece of cloth.

The frequency of electrode cleaning depends on the type and degree of contamination. However it is recommended that the electrode be cleaned once a week.

7. Modbus protocol and instructions

7.1 Function code

In the original Modbus protocol definition, there are many command functions on the substance of duplication. Base on the reason, SP-2300/2500 only supports some of the function codes. When starting communication, the Master sends the request through function code to tell the Slave to perform which actions. The Slave responds function which is the same as that sent by the Master to indicate the Slave has already responded to the Master and has performed the action.

The range of function code is 1~255. In between, the function code 128~255 are defined as abnormal responding function code. The function codes which the slaves normally respond are the same as those from the Master. The highest bit(MSB) is 0. When the slaves respond abnormal message, the lowest bit(LSB) of function codes is the same as those of the master, however, the highest bit(MSB) of the function codes are set to be 1. It means that there occurs a error when executing the function codes. The following table lists the function codes supported by SP-2300/2500
