Hierarchy in the classification of OrganismsAll classification scheme are based on hierarchy of groups of animals.A taxon is the name given to group or category in a classification system. The largest taxon in the classification scheme is called a kingdom. The kingdom is divided into smaller units called phyla. A phylum can be subdivided into classes, each class into orders, each order into families, each family into genera, and each genus into species. The smallest unit in the hierarchy is the species.
