DIRECTOR ’S NOTES – EDWARD MORGAN

This play is both clever and funny, but it leaves me feeling a little queasy, too. For one thing it’s made me aware of my ignorance of the recent economic crisis, how the whole commercial paper market works, and how bankers, financial officers and politicians (from both parties) brought financial ruin to untold trusting citizens and businesses, while often still managing to hit the jackpot themselves. Thankfully, microcrisis is neither a gritty account of that debacle or a mind-numbing seminar on Collateralized Debt Obligation. Instead, it’s a slightly exaggerated satire (or morality tale?) that follows one such merry band of unregulated banditos, armed with netting, credit default swaps and an excellent risk assessment rating, gleefully conjuring a global paper empire with loans, loans and still more loans. What could be more fun? …At least until the cards begin to fall.

B IOGR APHIES

ABOUT THE PLAY-WRIGHT—MIKE LEW (Playwright) Mike Lew’s plays include BIKE AMERICA (Alliance, Atlanta; Kennedy Center, Juilliard, Playwrights Foundation, and Lark work-shops), microcrisis (Ma-Yi,

NYC; InterAct, Philadelphia; Next Act, Milwaukee); STOCKTON (EST workshop, NYC); PEOPLE’S PARK (Victory Gardens Ignition Festival, Chicago); YIT, NGAY (published in Plays and Playwrights 2006); NEANDERTHAL LOVE (Sloan commission); BURY THE IRON HORSE; and PAPER GODS. His shorts include TENURE (24 Hour Plays on Broadway); ROANOKE (Humana); IN PARIS YOU WILL FIND MANY BA-GUETTES BUT ONLY ONE TRUE LOVE (Humana; InspiraTO Festival, Toronto); and MOUSTACHE GUYS (Second Generation, NYC). Several of his shorts are published by Playscripts.

Mike is a resident writer for Blue Man Group and PBS Kids’ PEG + CAT, and winner of the Kendeda Award, Heideman Award, Sam French Festival, and Battle of the Bards. Along with his wife Rehana Lew Mirza, he is co-director of the Ma-Yi Writers’ Lab, the largest collective of Asian-American playwrights in the country. Training: Juilliard (2013), Yale (2003). Website: mikelew.com.

ALEXANDRA BONESHO (Lydia) is thrilled to be making her Next Act debut after having recently graduated from Marquette University in Theatre Arts. Professional credits include Alais in THE LION IN WINTER, and ART TO ART

at Danceworks. Favorite Marquette credits: Adriana, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS; Molly, HOLY DAYS; Audrey, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS; and Romaine Patterson/Others, THE LARAMIE PROJECT. She has also performed with the Sunset Playhouse and Plays for the Living. Next up, she will be appearing in CARTOON with Youngblood Theatre Company. Thank you to Edward, David and the entire creative team for letting me be a part of this production! Love to my parents for their constant support and encouragement.

DAVID CECSARINI (Bennett/Sound Design) This year marks David’s 34th as a theatre professional, having debuted with the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis as a journeyman actor in 1978. David has acted with most of

Milwaukee’s professional companies and also has extensive credits as a nine-year veteran of American Players Theatre in Spring Green, WI. Most recently,

Microcredit – The lending of relatively small sums of money, usually geared toward a single project. For instance, a $250 hand-driven irrigation pump can bring huge improvement to a farming village. Such cash cannot easily be raised in barter, low capital economies, so the infusion of the loan offers a critical, often technological advance that otherwise could not have happened.

CFO – Chief Financial Officer of a corporation: essentially responsible in three areas.Controllership – accurate and timely historical financial information about the company’s dealings.Treasury – insuring the financial health of the organization, including cash-on-hand, investments and sound financial structure.Strategy and Forecasting – projecting ahead and devising strategies for a sound and profitable future.

CDO – Collateralized Debt Obligation: an investment bond that is backed up by collateral, such as a house or, more accurately, the mortgage on a house. Financiers bundle thousands of loans together and cre-ate investment bonds. Profits to the investors come from mortgage interest. When the mortgages are solid, it’s a good investment; when the mortgages are fragile and failing, not so good.

Credit Default Swap: Basically, insurance. You’ve sold your billion dollar bond to investors. You want to cover yourself in the unlikely event that the bond goes bad and you need to pay back your investors. So you take out insurance for the bond’s value at, say, 1% of its worth. What’s odd, though, is that others can take out insurance policies on your bond as well. If your bond fails, the insurance company must pay you and anyone else who took out a policy on that bond. That could add up fast.

MARY KABABIK (Clare/Beta Test/Renée) Mary B. Kababik has worked as an actor in many different venues that involve both recorded and live performances, in Wisconsin and elsewhere. Her Milwaukee theater credits

She knows nothing about finance, and so feels very much at home in microcrisis.

NEXT ACT CONTR IBUTORS – ANNUAL OPER ATIONS

Next Act Theatre gratefully acknowledges the support of the following:

working with and learning from renowned Lighting Designers Jason Fassl and Andrew Meyers and knows their guidance and continuing education will help make him successful. Mike looks forward to many more productive years with Next Act Theatre and any new opportunities that may come this way.

CHARLES KAKUK (Managing Director) This marks Charles’ 21st season with Next Act. After spending three years in the Marine Corps protecting Missouri from Kansas, Charles worked for Pizza Hut Corporation as a

restaurant manager from 1979 to 1985 in Kansas City, and various cities in Wisconsin. Moving to Milwaukee in 1985, he has experienced the inner working of its arts and entertainment industries, from rock and pop music promotions at the River-side Theater and Alpine Valley to marketing for the Milwaukee Ballet. Along the way he received a BSBA from Cardinal Stritch University.

HEIDI BOYD (Development Director) Heidi graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Mu-sic in Vocal Performance from the University of Minnesota, and has since pursued a dual career as a performer and arts

administrator, having worked in Marketing and Recruiting at the Milwaukee Children’s Choir and in Development at Skylight Opera Theatre and Florentine Opera before coming to Next Act. She is thrilled to be a member of the Next Act team.

Heidi is currently a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Milwaukee Choral Artists, and will appear in productions at Skylight Music Theatre and Milwaukee Opera Theatre this year. She lives in Milwaukee with her husband Joel and their cat Isis.

REBECCA OHM (Marketing & PR Manager) Becky is excited to take over the marketing reins this sea-son. Born in Brookfield but raised in Three Lakes, WI, Becky moved to Milwaukee to accept an internship at the

South Milwaukee Performing Arts Center. After her internship, a new marketing position was spe-cifically created for her there, which, over the course of four years, Becky transformed into Marketing Director. The experience of wearing many hats and learning new tasks and angles has given her a nicely-balanced set of marketing skills, which she is look-ing forward to putting to work here at Next Act.
