MTC Commentary Sager Power Systems A Profile in Power Supply Distribution

In June 2014, North American IP&E distributor Sager Electronics acquired Power-

Gate LLC, a Silicon Valley-based power supply distributor. PowerGate LLC (PG)

was founded by two power supply industry veterans, Ed Kramer and Paul

Christiansen in 2005 as an exclusive power supply distributor supporting design

engineering with AC/DC power supplies, DC/DC converters and factory modified

standards and custom solutions. Their knowledge, experience and connections

within the power supply industry helped PG grow significantly over a relatively

short period, leading to the acquisition by Sager Electronics in 2014.

In the years preceding the acquisition of PowerGate LLC, Sager Electronics was a

growing presence in the power supply business and saw a unique growth oppor-

tunity in an area the distributor deemed “underserved.” Sager Electronics devel-

oped its power supply strategy as a means to differentiate itself both in the mar-

ketplace and with its parent company, TTI Inc., a leading distributor in the world

of IP&E.

Sager Power Systems (SPS) was officially launched in Q1, 2015 as a specialized

group within Sager Electronics dedicated to power solutions. Following the acqui-

sition of PG, SPS was created to preserve and build upon the power specialization

of PG while leveraging the strengths of Sager Electronics. Today, SPS stands as

a premier power supply distributor with a comprehensive offering of:

AC-DC power supplies

DC-DC converters

Medical power supplies

Industrial power supplies

LED power supplies

Sager Power Systems is now

the largest North American dis-

tributor of Mean Well, the larg-

est standard off-the-shelf

power supply company in the

world.

>>>

Following the PowerGate acquisition last year, Sager Electronics

looked to further cement its position in the power supply market. In

July 2015, Sager Electronics acquired Norvell Electronics, another

highly regarded power supply dedicated distributor and value added

reseller. (Please see press release on page 6). The Norvell acquisi-

tion completed the back-end capabilities for SPS, bringing an ISO

9001 approved facility capable of configuring safety agency ap-

proved modular power supplies and developing custom power sub-

systems.

With Sager's acquisition of PG and Norvell, and its formation of

Sager Power Systems, the group has taken an aggressive, positive

and expanded role to penetrate and support mid-tier & emerging

accounts using power. The company has assembled one of the

strongest and largest dedicated groups of power professionals capa-

ble of delivering and servicing any type of power supply to any num-

ber of accounts within North America:

There are 19 Power Systems Sales Engineers, dedicated to only

selling power, covering the entire North American market, with

as many as 3 to 4 Sales Engineers in major markets including

Northern California, Southern California, New England and Texas.

There are 13 inside power sales specialists, who support and sell

only power, helping to recommend solutions and take orders for

immediate shipment as well as schedule production level orders.

There is a team of 16 design engineers and technicians support-

ing engineered, custom power sub-system solutions and config-

uring modular power supplies located in Texas.

In addition to the dedicated power team, Sager has 120 additional

field and inside salespersons also supporting power, along with in-

dustry leading interconnect and electromechanical solutions.

With all its power expertise and a wide array of power supply ven-

dors, Sager Power Systems can match the right suppliers to the

right applications. In addition to offering standard solutions, SPS can

also provide two types of value-added solutions:

It can provide configurable/modular power supplies, which are

standard components assembled to create a custom power sup-

ply assembly that are safety agency approved. Small quantity

can be configured and shipped within 72 hours if required.

It can design “custom” power subsystems, done at the distributor

premises, designed and built for each customer’s unique set of

engineering requirements.

MTC Commentary Sager Power Systems

A Profile in Power Supply Distribution

While SPS offers a wide variety of

standard products and value-

added solutions from its own

premises, it can also offer solu-

tions for factory modified stan-

dard solutions. Such modifications

are needed where a standard

product, with minor modification

(s), will meet the engineering

need. This is very typical for me-

dium size OEM customers.

According to Paul Christiansen,

Vice President of Supplier Market-

ing & Product Management of

Sager Power Systems: “... Sager

Electronics brings a new power

strategy to the market. Sager is

changing the “P” in IP&E from

“Passives” to “Power”. Along with

its strong sales in interconnect

and electromechanical compo-

nents, Sager is transitioning

power to be the 3rd major cate-

gory on our line card…”

The newly established Sager

Power Systems (SPS) group con-

sists of a trifecta of distribution

expertise in power supplies:

Sager Electronics, PowerGate LLC

and Norvell Electronics. With this

combined expertise in selling

power supplies, SPS has become

a major force in power supply dis-

tribution with a goal to grow in

2015 to the #2 DTAM position for

power.

>>>

SPS's marketing and selling strategy is based on:

National network of dedicated Power Systems Sales Engineers

Aggressive pricing for medium to high volume requirements

Specialized inventory management programs

Knowledgeable Inside Sales Specialists only supporting power

In-house application support

Regional service centers for local support

Power solutions for a variety of markets including: Medical, In-

dustrial, Instrumentation, IT, LED and Datacom markets

Large offering of general purpose AC/DC, DC/DC and DC/AC

power

ISO 9001/Safety Certified Value Added Center for configuring

modular power supplies & developing custom power subsys-

tems

Customer Focus

SPS’ customers are mid-tier and emerging companies who need

additional support in power supply design or power engineering.

Normally these companies are focused on their own intellectual

property. For such customers, SPS provides a slew of products and

services including design and applications engineering expertise, in

addition to supply chain management and on-time delivery of the

right products, for the right application, in the right quantities. SPS

also offers expertise in safety and compliance regulations as well

as industry trends, areas that are ever changing and continuously

evolving.

Primary markets consist of:

Industrial/Instrumentation

Test and measurement

Medical

LED lighting

Goals

SPS’s 2015 sales are expected to be about $63-65 million. With all

its power-related enhancement and increased focus, their goal is to

cross the $100 million mark within the next four years.

The new Dual Cool 88 MOSFET gives power conversion engineers a first-of-its-kind alternative to bulky D2-PAK packages at half the size and with higher power density, superior efficiency and better cooling via air flow above and beneath the package. “Fairchild's Dual Cool 88 products played a central part in delivering a winning solution to one of our key customers,” said Patrick del Castillo, CEO, Castle Creations, Inc. “The low profile, small footprint, and low Rds(on) of the Dual Cool 88 MOSFETs enabled us to provide the smallest board size and lowest solution cost, while delivering the highest efficiency in high power BLDC motor drive applications.” “Between meeting industry regulations and consumer demand, manufac-turers need to address the growing worldwide trend toward smarter, smaller and more efficient consumer and industrial devices,” said Mike Speed, Director of Product Marketing at Fairchild. “The Dual Cool 88 MOSFET delivers superior performance, power density and efficiency in a package half the size of D2-PAK devices to enable manufacturers to de-velop more efficient products while reducing their cost and improving reli-ability.” Manufacturers can increase the efficiency of DC motors while reducing costs using the Dual Cool 88 packaging rather than MOSFETs in D2-PAK packages. Greater efficiencies with lower cost are enabled by the Dual Cool 88’s packages advantages over D2-PAK, including smaller size, thinner profile, and 93 percent lighter in weight, making them ideal for weight-sensitive applications such as drones and aero-modeling. Compared to D2-PAK, the Dual Cool 88’s package also delivers faster switching, less EMI along with the higher power density, and lower para-sitic losses. The reduced parasitic losses are achieved using source clip not wire bonds, ensuring high pulse current with 63 percent lower source inductance compared to D2-PAK devices. The Dual Cool 88 is also easier to store, ship and handle as it is highly resistant to moisture, which often causes damaging delamination during storage. Its excellent MSL1 rating allows it to resist moisture without re-quiring the protected packaging of D2-PAK devices. Availability The Dual Cool 88 MOSFETs’ are available in distribution.

Intersil Delivers First Encapsulated 80A Digital Power Module

ISL8273M provides highest power density POL solution for advanced FPGAs, processors and memory

The 80A ISL8273M further distances itself from competitive digital power modules by delivering 2x higher output current. Its proprietary High Density Array (HDA) package offers unmatched electrical and thermal performance through a single-layer conductive package substrate that reduces lead inductance and dissipates heat primarily through the system board. The ISL8273M is built on Intersil’s proven, fourth generation digital controller technology and is pin-for-pin com-patible with the 50A ISL8272M. It expands Intersil’s existing 6A - 50A digital power module family, giving customers an easy migration path to higher current rails. These fully encapsulated power modules are compatible with all industry pick and place equipment for full manufacturing automation. “With advanced FPGAs and processors occupying more of the PCB real estate and requiring higher input current levels at lower input voltages, the demands on POL power converters are being pushed to the limit,” said Mark Downing, senior vice president of Infrastructure and Industrial Power Products at Intersil. “The 80A ISL8273M gives our customers the power density they need, along with excellent thermal and electrical performance, on-the-fly power supply optimization, and real-time system monitoring and control.” Through a PMBus-compliant interface, the ISL8273M module’s digital control technology provides precise sequencing, full telemetry and system monitoring. The ISL8273M can also start up and operate in pin-strap mode using six external resistors for setting default configura-tions such as Vout, soft-start, under-voltage, switching frequency and current sharing. This allows designers to power up the modules during the development phase without using PMBus or requiring any programming.
