===============================Michigan Runner TV: Steve's Run===============================Steve's Run continues to attract one of the fastest, deepest fields around for the 10K and 5K runs for theeclectic course. Check out the golf course, cemetery, nature preserve, Southwestern Michigan Collegecampus and Roadrunner Trails.http://michiganrunner.tv/2010stevesrun/

======================================================Michigan Runner TV: Women's Only Triathlon and Dri-Tri======================================================We had fun behind the camera at this event of 400 women-- half of whom were participating in theirfirst triathlon. =================================================================What Ever Happened to Pooh a.k.a. Herb Squires? by Art McCafferty================================================================="Emily and Pooh and Detroit Too" was one of the slogans for one of Michigan's most electric couples,Emily Gail and Herb Squires who put on some mega races in the late 70's and early 80's in Detroit. They rubbed elbows with the city's VIPs and enjoyed some serious power with their tag line, "SaySomething Nice About Detroit".

"They also participated in a "Lap Around America", did a film with Charlie Blanchard of Total Runnerabout their "Death Valley Run", and headed up the triathlon movement with their participation in theIronman.

"They left town in the mid 80's, Emily to work with the Ironman Triathlon folks and to also get hergolf game back. She now has her own golf radio show in Hawaii:http://emilygail.point2agent.com/Emilys_Talk_Radio/page_1924536.html. I met her on a couple ofoccasions, once about eight years ago, when she was trying to catch on with the Futures Tour at atournament in Milford and two years ago at the PGA Championship at Oakland Hills.

"Both Herb and Emily were together in Hawaii, but gradually separated due to their careers going indifferent directions. Herb became a movie producer; "Race the Sun" and film and other promotionalevents sent him around the world for a number of years. He is now in California and was a recentvictim of one of those horrid brush fires that are so prevalent in California. In escaping the fire, heinjured his back and is now in treatment.

"Herb has led a pretty exciting life and there is a company that would like to develop a movie thatchronicled his exploits. Squires called me to see if I could send him some information about his life inDetroit, as he lost all his memorabilia in the fire. I pulled out some back issues of the MR, going back to1979 and 1980 and sent him some of his Detroit memories.

"Race the Sunhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117427/Plot Summary for, Race the Sun (1996) A bunch of high school misfits in Hawaii, introduced by theirnew teacher, attend a science fair in which they draw up inspiration to build their own solar car andwin a trip to compete in the 1990 World Solar Challenge in Australia.

"Note: There had been some talk and even an article in MR that indicated that Herb Squires wasexpelled from the states for some questionable business practices. He indicated that it was all amisunderstanding and that he has his green card."

==========================================================E2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitness: Building Muscles==========================================================Are you looking for ways to increase your muscle mass? A diet moderate in protein will help, butscientific research shows that a high protein diet will not build bigger muscles. While muscles are madeof protein, eating more than you need of this nutrient will not result in greater muscle growth.

How much daily protein do I need? The American Dietetic Association and the American College ofSports Medicine recommend 0.5-0.8 grams protein/pound body weight. For example, a 160 poundmale should consume 80 – 128 grams of protein/day (160 x 0.5-0.8). Ultra endurance athletes whocompete for several hours or on consecutive days should maintain a protein intake at the higher end ofthe range, or slightly above. Most protein requirements can be met through real food and beverages.Athletes should make sure that they maintain an adequate calorie intake as well so that protein can beused for muscle repair and growth instead of being siphoned off and used as energy.

Page 4: Michigan Running News, August 4, 2010

sSample 100 gram Protein Menu

Breakfast: 6 ounces orange juice, 1 cup whole grain cereal (4) 1 cup milk (8), 1 banana OR 1 egg, 1ounce cheese omelet (13). Midmorning Snack: 1 ounce low-fat cheese (7), 6 crackers. Lunch: 1sandwich with 3 ounces meat (21), 1.5 cups salad (3) with 1/8 cup seeds (4), 1 cup low-fat milk (8), 1cup melon. Midafternoon Snack: 1.5 ounces nuts (12) Dinner: 1 cup long grain rice (3), 3 ounceschicken or seafood (21), 1 cup stir fry vegetables (4), 1 cup berries. Evening Snack: Yogurt smoothiewith fresh fruit (8)

Bottomline: Athletes do need more protein than non athletes, yet excessive amounts get turned into fatif your calorie intake for the day exceeds the energy you’ve burned. Get strong and improve yourperformance by growing muscles through good nutrition, progressive training and adequate rest.Sheryl Lozicki, RD, MBAE2 Eating & Exercise for Optimal Fitnesshttp://www.e2dietitian.comhttp://www.hometohealthymeals.comhttp://www.e2dietitian.blogspot.comhttp://www.twitter.com/e2dietitian"E2 Dietitian" Facebook Fan Pagehttp://www.linkedin.com/in/sheryllozicki

===================================================MRN on The Road: Dowagiac, Marshall, Sylvania, Ohio===================================================DOWAGIAC (July 31) - Among the many reasons we look forward to Steve's Run is the chance torenew acquaintances and to make some new friends. Last year we met Adele Pitt, who comes toDowagiac from Cudahy, Wisconsin. Adele followed up our recommendation and joined Kathy Loper'stour to run the Great Wall Half Marathon in China this last May. Adele, who running a half-marathonevery month, compared notes with Melissa Bergeron, who is in the process of running a marathon everymonth. Melissa had a plenty of speed left after her marathon win at Carrollton earlier in the week.Another reason is dinner at the fabulous Woodfire Grill.

MARSHALL (July 31) - Marshall's Riverwalk along the Kalamazoo River could win the prize for "BestRiverwalk". Marshall was on our route from Dowagiac to Ypsilanti, so we decided to check out thestate of the Kalamazoo River. We discovered the beautiful Riverwalk, a bit upstream from the oil spill. If you enjoy Victorian architecture, Marshall is the place to see. We also stopped for dinner at therenowned Schuler's Restaurant, currently celebrating their 100th anniversary.

SYLVANNIA, OH (August 1) - Jim and Joyce Donaldson and their Elite Endeavors staff put ontriathlons and duathlons that are all about fun. The Women's Only Triathlon and Dri-Tri took us to anew place, Centennial Terrace and Quarry. Triathletes swam a 400 yard loop with a time-trial start. The Quarry averages 22 ft. deep and features several diving platforms and a sandy beach. For those ofus who regret the city ordiances prohibiting diving boards, this is a wonderful find.

A large group of athletes, perhaps 30, sported matching Runnin' Gear apparel. Runnin' Gear heldsuccessful triathlon clinics and has stores in Waterford, Brighton, and Rochester Hills. We alsoappreciate Runnin' Gear's support of high school athletes competing in national meets.

"The Foundation took another look at Trail Running in early 2010. In the 2010 survey, 98% of trailrunners participate in another outdoor activity. Among those surveyed, 52% said they participated inday hiking, 51% said they participated in cycling, 44% said they participated in car, backyard or RVcamping, 31% in paddling and 25% in climbing.

"While participation in the sport dipped slightly in 2009, it is still hovering just below 5 million, or upnearly 17% since 2006. Slightly more than 13% of participants tried trail running for the first time in2009.

"The South Atlantic is home to 24% of the nation's trail runners, by far the largest share of any of nineregions included in the report."http://www.nsga.org.
