The 1992 Michigan Vegetable Inventory Survey is part of a three year rotational survey program which provides critical datti to Michigan’s agriculture industry on fruit, nurseries, Christmas trees and vegetables. The data compiled in these reports are important to future planning for these vital industries.

The Michigan Rotational Survey is funded by the Michigan Legislature and administered by the Michigan Department of Agriculture. The fruit survey was published in 1991, and the nursery and Christmas trees survey is scheduled for 1994. The next vegetable survey will be conducted in 1996.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture would like to thank the vegetable growers for providing the data that made this report possible. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Special thanks are also extended to vegetable processors and other industry officials; extension specialists at Michigan State University; data collectors at the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture; and the staff of the Michigan Agricultural Statistics Service for their excellent support for the program.

This cooperative effort between the private and public sectors allows for greater economic development of Michigan’s agricultural industry. If you have questions regarding this survey, or suggestions for improvement, please contact the Michigan Agricultural Statistics Service at (517) 377-l 834.

Sincerely,

Sal Schuette Director

The state is divided into 9 agricultural

statistics districts. The purpose of division

is to make easier comparisons of crop prog-

ress. The agricultural statistics districts are

numbered from north to south with district

1 in the U.P. to district 9 in the southeast.

Each district has within itself more homoge-

neous agriculture than does the state as a

whole. Different soil types, fertility, precipi-

tation, and length of growing season make

each district unique.

Yield Distributions

Table 7., below, shows percentiles and means for yields. A percentile of 25 means that 25 percent of the reported yields were lower than that value of pounds per acre. Means are weighted yields; the weights are acres. For most crops and utilizations the mean is higher than the median, the 50th percentile. These values indicate that large producers obtained higher yields than small growers.

32 Vegetables 1992

Survey Methods The 1992 Rotational Vegetable Survey began with a data users*meeting. Questionnaire content and format were

approved by this committee before printing the survey instrument. Industry representatives also assisted with publicity for the project.

Questionnaires were mailed to all operations on the Michigan Agricultural Statistics Service’s list sampling frame that had indicators of vegetables. This mailing occurred in October, 1992. In addition, questionnaires were sent to “snowball” operations in November, 1992. These were operations listed on the questionnaire as having vegetables that were not on the original list. Just over 75 percent of that list actually had vegetables in 1992. About 20 percent of the snowball list were confirmed commercial operations-growers that had at least one-half acre of any particular vegetable crop. A total of 2,280 operations were identified.

Operators who did not respond by mail were telephoned or interviewed in person in November and December. Acres by crop were estimated for those who refused or who were unable to be contacted. Completion rates by type were as follows: mailed-l 4 percent; telephoned-40 percent; interviewed-34 percent; estimated-l 2 percent. The percent cooperation varied widely by county, as shown in the following table.

Acres planted for major counties for each vegetable crop and utilization are shown except when confidentiality rules prohibited county level data publication. This occurs when there are fewer than three growers in the county or when one grower has more than 60 percent of the acres.’ Harvested acres and mean yields are shown at the agricultural statistics district level for major vegetable crops.2 They are published at the state level for minor crops.
