What is a HPSA?
Health Professional Shortage Areas
Health Professional Shortage Areas
(HPSAs) are designated by HRSA as
having shortages of primary care, dental
care, or mental health providers and may
be geographic (a county or service area),
population (e.g., low income or Medicaid
eligible) or facilities (e.g., federally
qualified health centers, or state or
federal prisons).

Importance of RHC Auto/Facility
HPSA Designation Certified Rural Health Clinics (RHCs)
Auto-HPSA designations does not go
away even if the service area is no longer
a HPSA designation as long as you meet
program requirements.
RHCs must apply for Auto/Facility HPSAs
through HRSA.

Upcoming HPSA Changes
Why is HRSA making the changes?
◦ Standardization of data sets
What does this mean for RHCs?
◦ Potential Score Changes
◦ Withdrawal of Designations
If you have a certified RHC and it does NOT have
an Auto-Facility HPSA, apply now!

5 Designations of unknown rural status may include 1) OFAC HPSAs whose precise location could not be located on a map (i.e., geocoded) or 2) geographic
or population group HPSAs that are made up of some or all areas for which rural status is undefined. Rural status may be undefined where rural information or underlying geographic reference data for administrative boundaries is unavailable for the specified geographic area.
