Meg Mallon. Made in Michigan? We’d like to think so.

Winner of Michigan Amateur, 1983, inducted into Michigan’s Sports Hall of Fame, 2009, and member of Michigan’s Golf Hall of Fame, Meg Mallon is here to stay. After retiring from professional golf at the age of 47, Mallon is busy buying a home to renovate in Oakland County. Mallon credits Michigan for allowing her to play all the sports little girls weren’t supposed to play. How fortunate she was to have experienced playing golf in a state that offers some of the fi nest, top-rated courses in the country. She has been able to pick from a diverse menu of daily fee and resort properties often with vistas resembling those of Pebble Beach. Featured on the top of the menu is The Resorts of Tullymore and St. Ives in Stanwood, which touts the best two days of award-winning golf accompanied by fabulous accommodations and exceptional service. Also on the Made in Michigan fare is a drive to the southeast (from Tullymore) to Bucks Run where it’s simply gorgeous and perhaps down the road to Pohlcat for another 18 holes. The selection continues as you head north on I 75 to Gaylord – America’s Golf Mecca where the venue of courses are all within a 45 mile radius. There are plenty of places to play and stay. If interested in sharpening your skills, golf schools are available at Treetops, The Loon and Otsego Club. The west side of the state holds it’s own accolades with courses like Pilgrim’s Run, Grand Haven, Beeches, Macatawa Legends and HawksHead. Rounding out the entire golf experience is playing in Southeastern Michigan. Tee times are available at Fieldstone, Westwynd, Devil’s Ridge, Coyote, Northville Hills, Huntmore and Moose Ridge, the hidden jewel in South Lyon. So why is Meg Mallon returning to Michigan? Because she is no different from the other 1.3 million golfers who are “Made in Michigan” and plan to play and stay here. This is Michigan and this is what we do! Phyllis C. quest for every hole. Eye-popping views change from each vantage point through-out a round, and the drive leading to both clubhouses begins one’s visit to this “Heaven in the Palm of Michigan.”

Tullymore’s Lure

Tullymore’s winding fairways fl ow with European fl air over 800 acres of some of Michigan’s most beautiful terrain. Its artistic, dynamic design by Jim Engh, a Golf Digest Architect of the Year, will captivate every golfer. Each hole takes full advantage of its natural surroundings by incorporating the land’s native grasses, wetlands and forests. Tullymore wins a golfer’s heart and lures him or her to return again and again. It also features a magnifi cent 18,000 square-foot clubhouse as the hallmark centerpiece of its surrounding, growing residential community. An elegant veranda stretches almost the entire length of the rear of the building and overlooks the sensation-al design and view of the golf course’s sig-nature 18th hole. The spot is a very popular lounge area for both golfers and non-golfers alike, especially around two stone fi re pits that grace each end of the veranda and provide comfy seating. Even with a capacity of 250 guests, the area is normally full of fun well into the evening.

St. Ives, Another

Masterpiece

Prior to the creation of Tullymore, golfers had already discov-ered the St. Ives Golf Course, another golfi ng masterpiece that awaits players just fi ve miles from Tullymore. Many regard St. Ives as one of Jerry Matthews’

best work. The legendary golf course architect took one of the fi nest mixes of woodlands, wetlands and tranquil surroundings that Michigan had to offer and created an excep-tional golf experience with a tour de force of rolling fairways, dramatic elevation changes of 40 to 80 feet and breathtaking vistas. Golfers from Near & Far

“Golfers come here to our two award-winning courses from all over the United States and the world,” says CEO Terry Schieber. “We have an appealing array of accommodations for any size group, for families and for couples.” Besides the Inn and new Lodge, one may choose to stay in new luxurious homes and condominiums surrounding Tullymore. The variety of reservation options allows guests to enjoy a package customized for a single night or longer. When golfi ng or just visiting, a full tour of all the resort has to offer, including its scenic and charming residential village, is highly recommended. Experience the best in Michigan and the Midwest! Schedule a tee time, book a golf package or spend a lifetime. Visit www.tullymoregolf.com or call (800) 972-4837.

Buck’s Run enters its second decade serving those who fi nd themselves seeking a wonderful golf experience

in Mount Pleasant, the heart of Michigan. The neighbor of Central Michigan Univer-sity and Soaring Eagle Casino is a glorious 290-acre living testament to the rolling, dra-matic land the glaciers carved so long ago.

Michigan’s internationally renown Jerry Matthews, the state’s most prolifi c course architect and designer, considers his natural golf creation an example of his award-win-ning fi rm’s best work.

Others feel that way, too. Golf Digest has Buck’s Run ranked with 4 1/2 stars out of a possible 5, and in 2010 the course was ranked No. 30 in the United States among Golf World’s 2010 “Public Places to Play.”

Want a sneak peek? Check out the re-tooled website www.bucksrun.com, which this year features increased accessibility, more golfer-friendly functions and a guide to discounts. Stay and play packages are available, as well.

The course, 6,756 yards of fun and challenge, was created on the site of a former stone quarry. It surrounds stun-ning Fisher Lake with fi ve golf holes and incorporates the views and challenges created by two ponds and the Chippewa River. Dramatic elevation changes and rock outcroppings add to the visual elegance, as well as to the challenge on the manicured bentgrass-dressed course. Golfers should bring 14 clubs, a camera and a willingness to escape into a glorious golf experience.

All golfers are welcome, too. Four sets of tees await to help visitors discern the length and level of challenge they hope to take on. Water is everywhere, but is a beautiful backdrop as often as it is a hazard. Stunning stands of trees are frequent and natural grass areas frame and seemingly guide the golfer from tee to green.

From the front tee positions the designer was careful not to force impossible shots, while from the back tee posi-tions Mr. Matthews cre-ated a strong challenge. Fairways and greens are generous in size in some spots, and yet natural to the terrain and make the set-up of the course fl ex-ible and ever-changing.

The fi nishing holes of each nine are especially memorable. The ninth and 18th are gradual dogleg holes that embrace the com-bination of water, green expanse and design.

Golfers walk off the fi nal hole of the course wanting more, and things can get settled on the par-54, 18-hole island putting course. This is the rare real putting course, too, not of the putt-putt variety. It’s a true test of putting, and truly fun.

It’s simply special at Buck’s Run. The stylish clubhouse that measures 18,000 square feet sets the tone with a profession-ally-designed and equipped pro shop, the Quarry Grill and Banquet Hall, which seats 250 people, and a private gathering room upstairs with the latest amenities.

Jon Conklin, head golf professional, promises a proactive approach to making sure the visitor has a great visit and experi-ence. The staff takes pride in its service. “Every customer is just as important as the next,” he says, “and all are welcome. We want golfers of all types, people of all types, to enjoy all that we offer. We don’t mind if you just come once, or come many times, we promise the same great service and experience each time.”

This year Buck’s Run is rewarding the experienced golfer with a special day. Mon-

days each week will welcome senior golfers over the age of 60 for a special price. Those golfers can play 18 holes with a cart for $50 on Mondays, or $25 off the regular rate. It’s bang for the buck at Buck’s Run in all aspects.

Jeff Sweet, the superintendent and gen-eral manager, offers an impeccable course condition.

“Jeff takes great pride in the condition of the course, and we always hear great feedback,” Conklin says. “The entire facility here is really impeccable.” Pete Lieber is the executive chef, and the dining is part of the reason many golfers seemingly stay from sunrise to sunset. The veranda that over-looks the golf course captures it all.

“Everything comes together here for an enjoyable golf experience,” Conklin says.

Buck’s Run is just 90 minutes from Grand Rapids and 60 minutes from Lansing.

It’s a must-stop, a must-play, fl exible in price with various specials and truly an upscale public venue with an everybody-is-welcome feel.

Grand Haven Golf Club is considered by many to be the Pine Val-ley of Michigan for its spectacular routing through the towering pines and rolling sand dunes along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

This old club was designed and originally operated by its resident owners, the famed Michigan design family of Bruce Mathews, Sr. Since 1998 when the Rooney Golf Group LLC purchased the property, it has undergone a $4.5-million revitalization.

President and Oklahoma Air National Guard Captain Dan Rooney brings an equal passion for great golf to his intense commitment to serv-ing our country, whether by fl ying his F-16s over the Middle East, or his involvement with the Folds of Honor Foundation (foldsofhonor.com). L ocated in beautiful Southwest Michigan, a mere 90 minutes from the Chicagoland area, Whittaker Woods Golf Club promises a golf experience as pure

as the surroundings.Designed by the late Ken Killian, this 18-hole champi-

Opened in 1996, Whittaker Woods hugs the Indiana state line, and is a popular getaway course for golfers across the Chicagoland area for its test, its quality and its beauty. Whitaker Woods offers a full practice area with a grass driv-ing range, a chipping area and a putting green, as well as terrifi c bar-and-grill fare in the charming clubhouse.

Undercover reporters for the Michigan’s Golfer’s Guide have uncovered a little

know website based in Ann Ar-bor, that sends members, group golf special offers and astonishing bonus deals not available to the general public. Membership is ap-parently free and according to at least one member of the group we spoke to, astonishingly benefi cial to its members.

Joe Prendergast said” I thought at fi rst it was hoax when I signed up and they offered me a free trip to a high-end Florida resort, in peak season. But sure enough that’s just one of the several thousand dollars worth of perks I got when I took my group to one of their rec-ommended courses, which I snagged at a substantial discount” Others we talked with raved about free rounds, equipment, VIP perks and upgrades that all come from Golf Group Leaks, twice monthly insider email offers.

Offi cials at the site would not

comment on the massive extent of the discounts or reported fringe benefi ts but admitted that the discounts and bonuses were substantial and that membership in the site was still open and free for a limited time at www.GolfGroupLeaks.com

Might well be worth checking out!

Black Forest, the biggest surprise, and best value in Gaylord. Before architect Tom Doak gave us Pacifi c Dunes, Cape Kidnappers, and restored Pasatiempo, he designed this

course in 1991. Doak, who lives in Traverse City, says this is where he started experimenting with some of the bunkering concepts he uses today. Golf Digest rates Black Forest as being just as much golf course as Arcadia Bluffs or Forest Dunes, and for $75, it’s about one-third of the price. One worthy observation from Doak: “If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t have made it so hard.” Which is a hint to move up a set of tee boxes. Make par from the Blue or Black tees on the 532-yard 10th hole, which is as long and narrow as Yao Ming, and receive a FREE gift from the pro shop!

Rated as one of the Top 10 courses in southeast Michigan (No. 3) by the Detroit Free Press, this par-71 layout plays to just under 7,000 yards.

Tucked away in secluded South Lyon, this gorgeous course is complemented by a welcoming log cabin-style club-house that makes you feel like you’re in Yosemite National Park. The entire course offers bentgrass tees, greens and fairways complemented by beautiful white sand bunkers. Designed by Michigan-based architect Ray Hearn, Moose Ridge is one of the more diffi cult courses in the region with a slope of 138. However, the fi ve sets of tees allows playability for all skill levels. Similar to Hearns’ other works, Moose Ridge is careful to achieve the proper balance of risk and reward while requiring careful strategy as you progress from shot to shot. The rolling topography and excellence in design and construction entices and challenges your golf game.

One of Naples’ Signature Golf Courses has a New Name

In this age of endless golf information, there are countless ways and means to learn to play the game of golf. You can follow the latest instruction article or video, take advice from the Internet or learn the old fashion way by taking advice from friends, based on the ideas they have seen, heard or read. Regardless, any or all of these approaches lead to continuous trial and error, usu-ally leaving the player more confused and discouraged than improved. Eventually, the inevitable frustration drives a player to con-sider professional help, either in the form of a single lesson, or for many, the total emersion of attending a golf school or academy. For 40 years, the United States Golf Academy has been the choice of thousands of golfers looking for the satisfaction that comes from an improved golf game and the understanding of how the improvement was achieved. This is a successful operation achieved from longevity and positive “word of mouth” recommendations from our students, rather than slick marketing and false prom-ises. The Academy’s promise is simple – a better golf game for each of our students!

The United States Golf Academy can make this promise for two reasons. First, our resident staff of PGA professionals is recognized throughout the golf industry for their knowledge and expertise is the areas of instruction and club fi tting. Not only are they the people that the golfi ng public seeks out for advice, but they are also the experts sought by their peers in the golf industry. Second, you must have the technology to provide accurate data and feedback to maximize the student’s efforts. The United States Golf Academy uses the industry’s standards in golf swing, ball fl ight and put-ting analysis. The Trackman launch monitor and PuttLab diagnostic technologies are the most accurate and informative technolo-gies available and they are used every day in the pursuit of a better golf game for our students. This combination of accurate data and human expertise allows our profes-sionals to offer a clear understanding to our guests of what can be done and the easiest way to accomplish it. Among the pantheon of golf courses emblazoned with the name of legendary architect Pete Dye, The

Fort is not the fl ashiest. It’s not the most recognizable. It’s not the newest. It is the most historically signifi cant, and a damn fi ne golf experience at that.

Dye, along with associate Tim Liddy, re-tooled The Fort in 1998 to create the wonderfully wooded layout you’ll fi nd tucked away in the shadows of downtown Indy. Designer and canvas just so happen to share a similar background.

While Mr. Dye never saw combat time during his time enlisted in the Unit-ed States Army, he was stationed at both Fort Benning (Georgia) and Fort Bragg (North Carolina). At Fort Bragg he served dutifully as greenskeeper of the base golf course, and during trips to nearby

Pinehurst, developed a relationship with Donald Ross. His love for “digging in the dirt” was born and the rest is history.

Established seven years after Fort Benjamin Harrison was offi cially decom-missioned, Dye stepped in to craft a course in the middle of a 1,700-acre state park. Opened in 1906, Fort Ben was an active military base from World War I until Operation: Desert Storm. The base housed prisoners of war during the World War II.

Currently ranked as the No. 3 place

you can play in the entire state of Indiana by Golf.com, The Fort Golf Course is a beautiful and challenging design known for its tree-lined fairways, rolling hills and undulating greens, which have Dye written all over them. The course has also received a 4.5-Star rating from Golf Digest and was rated No. 1 in Indiana by Golfweek.

“There simply is not a better piece of property in Central Indiana upon which to build a championship golf course,” said Head Golf Professional Jon Chapple. “The Fort’s unpredictable topography and Pete Dye’s visionary architecture have joined to create experience that is unparalleled in the Hoosier State. It is not surprising that time after time the golf course is a regular feature in annual golf course rankings.”

The Fort showcases the best of what Indiana golf has to offer. At 7,148 yards playing to a par 72 over nearly 240 acres, this layout meanders through trees, val-leys and wetlands in order to create an experience that allows the golfer to enjoy nature and the game all at once.

It’s an impossible chore to select just one signature hole at The Fort. Nos. 4, 5, 6, 11 and 18 are all worthy of that distinction. Each of these Dye creations shares a few common traits: thick woodlands and elevation changes, which demands a precise tee shot. Each hole then concludes on quick greens requiring a skillful sense of fi nesse.

The course has also become a popu-lar “Stay and Play” because of the variety of lodging options available.

Golf packages at The Fort include 18 holes of golf with cart, overnight lodging, unlimited range balls, complimentary bag storage and souvenir bag tag and ball. The facility has become a trusted choice for cor-porate and charity outings. Here are some facilities available for lodging and events:

The Main Lodge – A 27-room facility lo-cated just 300 yards from the golf courseThe Harrison House – A more intimate facility with suites and very comfortable overnight accommodations a mere 100 yards from the golf courseOffi cers Homes – Fully furnished 3-bed-room homes that once housed visiting dignitaries and military generalsGarrison Conference Center – The ideal space for your wedding or business con-ference, the Garrison has a dining room that offers daily lunch, weekend dinner buffets and delicious Sunday brunches.

In addition to the conference center, overnight lodging accommodations and championship 18-hole golf course, The Fort has outstanding practice grounds, private and group instruction and men’s and women’s locker rooms.

Tee times can be booked online at www.thefortgolfcourse.com or by calling the pro shop at (317) 543-9597.
