===============================THEY’VE GOT FEVER: By Jack Berry===============================Cabin fever broke out in the Grand Rapids area last weekend and like Punxsutawney Phil poking hishead out of his burrow, 12,000-plus golfers saw sunshine at the West Michigan Golf Show at DeVosPlace.

“That’s the second biggest attendance we’ve had,” Show manager Carolyn Alt said. “The aisles werebusy and sales people were tired, hoarse and happy Sunday night. If we are any indication, it’s going tobe a good year for the industry.”

Bob Kitchen of the Maple Hill Golf and Pro Shop, one of the biggest exhibitors at the show, said thewhite TaylorMade R11 driver, which is used by Dustin Johnson and Martin Kaymer and received a lotof TV time, was “the hottest club by far. We sold 70 and are reordering.”

Kitchen said his staff had a contest Saturday to see who could sell the most iron sets and NickMonterusso sold 43 for the title. In all, the staff sold 90 sets Saturday.

“Our sales figures indicate the economy is bouncing back,” Kitchen said.

Show goers kept pros from the Michigan Section of the PGA and Boyne Resorts busy with free mini-lessons. Justin Phillips of the PGA said the pros gave 409 lessons and were busy throughout the threedays of the show.

Randy Ballinger of family-owned, 36-hole Walnut Creek Golf Course, just off I-69 by Marion, Ind., is alongtime exhibitor at the West Michigan Show. Two years ago when rounds were dropping everywhere,Ballinger was asked how things were going. He came up with a line that summed up the situation: “Flatis the new Up.”

Last week Ballinger said he feels some optimism, a better feeling about the golf business and he saidowners have had to be competitive with their pricing and offer good service and well-maintainedcourses.

“Feeling better” was shared by resort representatives from around the state and uniformly they salutedthe re-funding of the nationally awarded “Pure Michigan” ad campaign after it appeared last session’slegislators were going to put it on bread and water rations. They all credited it with bringing business toMichigan and showing great images of a beautiful state that was sinking under a rust belt, deadindustry reputation.

Show manager Alt and Gregg Kirchen, executive director of the Michigan Interscholastic Golf CoachesAssociation, also gave a boost to high school golf teams with a “Fight of the Flapjacks” fund-raiser.Eighteen area high school teams had a flapjack breakfast Saturday morning before the show doorsopened. The breakfast cost $7 of which $4 went into a pot that was divided on the number ofbreakfasts purchased by each team.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central's Boys team won with the Holland Girls second and Swartz Creek third.GRCC collected $265 and Maple Hill Golf Center added $500 to that. The Holland girls team got $344and Swartz Creek $231. In all, $1,448 will be donated to the teams.

Mentioning money, Michigander Tom Gillis finished third in the AT&T National Pro-Am at PebbleBeach Sunday and won $428,400, his biggest check as a pro and Gillis is 42. His road to success on thePGA Tour took a route the AAA couldn’t map, playing on about every continent but Antarctica. Hefinally settled down in 2009 and played well on the Nationwide Tour – a friend said he stopped beatinghimself up -- graduated to the big Tour and in 2010 he finished 74th on the money list with $1,166,146.

The Pebble Beach check was bigger than what Alvaro Quiros collected for winning the Dubai DesertClassic which featured the world’s top three, Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Tiger Woods, plusRory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia. There also were thousands more spectators at Pebble Beach than atDubai. The Dubai bait is the European Tour has a blind eye when it comes to paying appearancemoney.

Still on money, Golf Channel appears to be the Channel of Millionaires. True, around 100 players make$1 million or more. But what about Rush Limbaugh and Donald Trump? Multi-multi millionairesMaybe to balance things, Golf Channel should get that former ESPN anchor, Keith Olbermann. He isn’tdoing anything now, is he? Should be available.

OK, one more. A famous player-course designer was approached about returning to a course he’ddesigned in Michigan. The price? $200,000. Plus fuel for the jet.

Bill Murray said D.A. Points won at Pebble Beach because Murray didn’t ask him all week what D.A.stands for. It is odd that two men from Illinois with the initials D.A. have been successful on the procircuit. D.A. (Donald Albert) Weibring who was an assistant at Red Run Golf Club before going to theTour, and now D.A. (Darren Albert) Points.

Seeing all the beards, full and scruffy, these days might lead Commissioner Tim Finchem to sign Gilletteas the Official Razor of the PGA Tour. Clean shaven was the rule when Deane Beman wascommissioner. Like many other things, those days are gone forever.

================================================FOUR ELECTED TO MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME================================================Public links veteran Jim Briegel, golf course architect Arthur Hills, journalist Terry Moore and DonPerne, co-founder of the PGA of America’s Professional Golf Management at Ferris State University, represent a broad cross-section of the game, and have been elected to the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame.

Briegel is a life-long public course player who picked up golf while caddying for the University ofMichigan golf team for five years starting at the age of 12. Now in his 80s, Briegel still is a long hitterand in 2007 shot 70 from the back tees in a tournament at Dunham Hills to beat his age by 11 strokes.

A contender and officer in the Michigan Publinx Golf Association for years, Briegel has continued as asenior and the Michigan Publinx Seniors Golf Association championship is named for him, the BriegelCup. Briegel also is a driving force in the MPSGA State Senior-Amateur Open.

While president of the Braun & Brumfield Printing Co. of Ann Arbor he was involved with theproduction of three Sleeping Bear golf books including “The Spirit of St. Andrews,” “Golf Has NeverFailed Me” and “Forbidden Fairways.”

Arthur Hills was captain of the Michigan State University golf team while working toward a degree inAgronomy and Lansing native Perne was a teammate and served three years prior to Hills as captain.Hills went on to earn a degree in Landscape Architecture at the University of Michigan. He hasdesigned more than 225 courses around the world.

Hills designed 16 courses in Michigan, from the Arthur Hills Course at Boyne Highlands and BayHarbor in Petoskey to Egypt Valley in Ada and Hawkshead in South Haven, Shepherd’s Hollow andPine Trace in metropolitan Detroit and Red Hawk in Tawas.

Hills completely revamped the West course at MSU’s Forest Akers complex, redesigned the East courseand designed the expansive practice area.

Hills has renovated more than 125 courses including Inverness, his home club, in Toledo and hasworked on Oakland Hills, Oakmont and Congressional, all U.S. Open sites. He has received honorsfrom Golf Digest for Best New Private and Best New Public courses and Boardroom Magazine namedhim Golf Course Architect of the Year in 2008.

Terry Moore, once a school administrator but a caddie as a youngster, got back into golf in 1983 whenhe co-founded Michigan Golfer magazine with Art McCafferty. Moore covered 27 Buick Opens andthis year will be his 28th Masters Tournament. While editor of Michigan Golfer he printed stories onevery facet of the game, from juniors and high schools to seniors, amateurs and professionals, superintendents and association officials.

Moore founded the West Michigan Golf Show in 1989. The Grand Rapids show has been one of themost successful and well-attended in the country, has featured seven PGA Teacher of the Year recipients, including Jim Flick, Hank Haney, Gary Wiren, and current Teacher of the Year Todd Anderson, aGrand Rapids native and head of instruction at Sea Island Resort in Georgia.

The show now is owned by ShowSpan but Moore continues in a media relations role. He served 10

years on Egypt Valley’s Media Committee during the PGA Champions Tour run and was point personfor the club’s bid to host the 2010 USGA Junior Boys Championship, the first USGA championship heldin West Michigan. Moore also is a governor of the Golf Association of Michigan and continues to writefor Michigan Golfer online and several other internet outlets.

Don Perne and Arthur Hills have linked from the time they were at MSU. Perne was two years ahead ofHills and chose to become a PGA professional – Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member Horton Smithsigned his membership papers. Hills decided on design and has become one of the leaders in the field.

Perne was professional at St. Clair River Country Club, Shaker Heights in Ohio, Canoe Brook in NewJersey and Wilmington CC in Delaware and eventually wound up at Inverness Club in Toledo from1981-93. He was one of the first six PGA Master Professionals. He was host professional of the 1986and 1993 PGA Championships.

Perne, a drum major while at MSU, led the field in every Northern Ohio Section PGA tournament andis in the Northern Ohio PGA Hall of Fame.

While earning many PGA honors for his work with caddies and fellow PGA members, Perne considersco-founding the Professional Golf Management program at Ferris State his No. 1 achievement. RobertEwigleben, another MSU teammate, was president of Ferris and between the school and the PGA theydeveloped the program in which students receive a business degree, spend 16 to 20 months ininternships at clubs and resorts around the country and then are eligible for PGA membership.

PGM is so successful that 24 other universities have adopted it.

Briegel, Hills, Moore and Perne will be inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame on May 15 atIndianwood G&CC. The quartet raises the number of Hall of Fame members to 94. For moreinformation on this year’s induction ceremony, contact Loretta Larkin at [email protected] or (248) 719-0650.

===================================THE CYBER GEEZER AT THE WMGSBy Thad Gutowski a.k.a The Cyber Geezer===================================The Cyber Geezer a.k.a. Thad Gutowski, is pleased to report there wasan obvious aura of optimism among the golf course operatorsexhibiting at the West Michigan Golf Show in Grand Rapids lastweekend. The twenty-five or so I talked with are looking forward to thecoming season and feel the pressure to lower green-fees is now history.

I don’t recall hearing the term “third party resellers.” Thank God!

I was impressed with the many who were interested in hearing moreabout Internet marketing with informative Newsletters and the hot newway to spread the word: Facebook and Twitter. Most realize treating Facebook “Fans” is a whole lotdifferent than posting casual messages for “Friends.”

Tune in to the next Cyber Geezer column when we will address this in more detail. For now check outwhat Al Lynch of Club Cars and Peter Fitzsimmons of the Petoskey Area CVB think about Facebookand social media.

====================MINZEY'S MUSINGS====================Moshe was sitting at the bar staring at his drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next tohim, grabs his drink and gulps it down in one swig and menacingly says, “Thanks Jew Boy, whatchagoing to do about it?" Moshe burst into tears.

"Come on, man," the biker says, "I didn't think you'd CRY. I can’t stand to see a man crying. What’syour problem?"

"This is the worst day of my life," Moshe says. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and myboss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don't have anyinsurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife in bed with the postman and thenmy dog bit me." "So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all. I buy a drink;drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; then you show up and drink the wholething! "

"But enough about me, how's your day going?"
