==========================================MICHIGAN GOLF NEWS- THE NEWSLETTER SAGA==========================================For those of you that have been reading this missive on occasion for the past ten years, you havenoted our recent attempts to climb into the 21st century with our newsletters. I said newsletters,because our little company, GLSP, produces each year a total of 143 newsletters, hundreds of onlinevideos for our seven Internet channels, six print and online issues of our Michigan Runner Magazineand four issues of our online Michigan Golfer Magazine.

Like many of you, we have been dazzled by the graphically dramatic enewsletter that pop into our inbox everyday. We have been please with our attempts to put out such a graphically pleasingnewsletter the past few months.

However, we thought we needed to back off this approach for the immediate future, to make sure thatthis is the direction we want to go and make sure we have sufficient resources for making thesechanges. In addition, the feedback we have received has been mixed, with excellent emails received onboth sides of the issue. Another issue was pointed out by a subscriber, who noted that their corporatesite would not allow him to click into the newsletter, which now resides on ISSUU.

We added the ISSUU component http://issuu.com/michigangolfer/docs/mgn4-23-10, a week ago, tolessen the cost of our newsletter that had tripled in cost due to the use of photographs within thenewsletter. For those that have not had a chance to check out ISSUU, you might want to look at it, asit is our delivery system for our Michigan Golfer and Michigan Runner Magazines. While we haveplaced our magazine online since 1996 http://michigangolfer.com/#pastissues the technology fordisplaying magazine content has changed. In our earlier issues of the online Michigan Golfer, weprepared a pdf of each of our stories within the publication. We did not include advertisers at thetime. Eventually, speeds increased so that we could put the entire magazine up, ads included, and havethe entire magazine pulled up to read. However, the magazine was still a struggle to read, due to theloading time of the file and the limitations of the PDF format.

When we started putting up on publications on ISSUU, we could also get a more reliable statistic as tohow many times the magazine was being read. In years prior, I had to go into a software stat packageand try to eek out some stats that would be understandable and attractive to potential advertisers.With the increasing sophistication of statistical software we found that the number of publicationsread was a tad clearer. However, the software also screened out, bots and other search engine agentsthat constantly hit a website. One year, I had to cut my online circulation figures in half, due to thattraffic being factored out.

Our last issue of the Michigan Golfer Magazine had just South of 700 readers, a hopeful figure thanthe 20 readers we had on our first issue a year and a half ago. However, a circulation of 700, is notenough to attract advertisers as yet, so all of this work is done to position the publication foradvertising when the circulation is a little more attractive.

We want to marry our newsletters with ISSUU, as it will allow for the information included in thenewsletter to be archived, something that was not being done before, but in doing so, it creates

another step for the reader and sends them to a new site, with different tools to read their newsletter.

Sound confusing, well, it is. I have been a publisher for over 30 years and created the world's firstrunning and golf online magazines back in 1995 and the world's first online television network with achannel for golf, running and skiing in 2001.

However, we live in a world of what have you done lately. While we also gear up to launch our newTwitter and Facebook pages, I just felt it was time to push back and chill for awhile. Therefore, hereis your Michigan Golf News, much as it has appeared for the past ten years.

In addition, this is our busy time of the year and also summertime in Michigan. I feel our staff needsto be playing golf more and going out for more runs in the sun. We will keep at it and will bring inour new changes over a longer period of time. Cheers

==================================================================PALMER AND NICKLAUS ONE OF TOP TEN RIVALRIES OF THE 20TH CENTURY ==================================================================If you want to maintain polite conversation, some say to stay away from religion, politics and sports

rivalries. Richard Davies, University of Nevada, Reno sports historian and author of the newlyreleased Rivals! The Ten Greatest American Sports Rivalries of the 20th Century, concurs.

Davies’ newest work released this month by Wiley-Blackwell, featuring famous rivalries such as theBears and the Packers, the Red Sox and the Yankees, and the Dodgers and the Giants, has createdquite a stir already. Although he chose a seemingly geographically balanced mix of pro and collegerivalries, as well as some individual rivalries, such as Mohammad Ali and Joe Frazier, Davies haslearned that he can’t please everyone. “I’ve heard from friends, colleagues and others, questioning whytheir favorite rivalry wasn’t included, and some were pretty upset,” he chuckled.

Davies didn’t make his top-10 decision lightly, spending almost four years researching and writing thebook, and painfully eliminating some rivalries he had initially considered. Even some rivalries close tohis own heart, such as the Kansas Jayhawks and Missouri Tigers, did not make the cut. The Frazier-Ali rivalry, one that Davies wasn’t initially too enthused about, did make the cut.“I don’t like the sport, and didn’t want to do it,” he said. “It was the one I had the least interest in –‘The Bull and the Butterfly.’ But, there was such a clash of personalities there that I ended up reallyenjoying it. Ali made fun of Frazier and called him stupid. But, I learned a lot about Frazier and have agreat deal of respect for him.”The decision on which rivalries to include was an analytical one. Recognized as one of the top sportshistorians in the country, perhaps no one is more qualified to make the call. So, without further ado,the “winners” are, in no particular order:

- The Ohio State-Michigan football rivalry- The Harvard-Yale football rivalry- The Duke-North Carolina men’s basketball rivalry- The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry- The Bears-Packers rivalry- The Dodgers-Giants rivalry- The Celtics-Lakers rivalry- The Chris Evert-Martina Navratilova rivalry- The Joe Frazier-Muhammad Ali rivalry- The Jack Nicklaus-Arnold Palmer rivalry

======================================================U OF M ASHLEY BAUER INVITED TO NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL======================================================"University of Michigan women's golf senior captain Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand BlancHS) was selected Monday (April 26) as an invited individual participant for the 2010 NCAA CentralRegional. The Central Regional will be Thursday through Saturday, May 6-8, at Ottercreek GolfCourse, Columbus, Ind., hosted by Indiana. The Wolverines as a team were not selected for an at-largebid.

Bauer, who is making her third NCAA appearance, was one of just three individuals invited to play inthe Central Regional, joining Drake's Olivia Lansing and Missouri's Julia Potter.

"Clearly this exciting for me, but it is going to be hard not being there with my teammates," saidBauer. "This is my third trip to the NCAA and it's a chance to continue my career and I am thankful

for that. I am going to work as hard as I can over the next week and a half and then go into theregional and give it my all. We will just have to see what happens. I am very happy for this chance tokeep playing for Michigan and I will do everything I can to represent this program well."

The NCAA Central Regional will feature 24 teams as well as the three individuals. Selected teams forthe 2010 Central Regional include: Arizona State, USC, Purdue, Michigan State, Georgia, Denver,New Mexico, Florida State, Oklahoma State, Louisville, Oregon, Kent State, Northwestern, NotreDame, Mississippi, San Diego State, Baylor, Tulsa, N.C. State, Indiana, Illinois State, Murray State,Detroit and Jackson State."

================================================================MICHIGAN GOLFER TO TELEVISE BOYNE'S TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS================================================================We are very excited about being given the opportunity to bring our viewers this year's Tournament ofChampions held at Boyne Mountain. This will be the one Michigan PGA Major that we have notbrought our audience since we started online television in 2001.

This will be the 19th edition of the tournament that was created by Steve Kircher and Ken Devine(Note: check out the video of Ken Devine talking about the start in a chat with Boyne's MikeChumbler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2flCPqmkbtY ) and held for the first time in 1992 .

For Michigan golf historians, the 1992 debut of the Tournament of Champions, produced one of themost exciting finishes in Michigan golf, the area code 313 finish of Dan Olson. Olson, in finishing hisround, shot birdie (3), ace (1) and birdie (3) to win the tournament by one stroke.

Since then Jeff Roth has won it four times, Michael Harris five times and Stacy Snider, struck a blowfor women's golf when she won the whole thing in 2003. Scott Hebert is the defending champion.

==========================================================MINZEY'S MUSINGS: WHY WE DON'T PLAY GOLF WITH OUR SPOUSE==========================================================A husband/wife reluctantly agreed to play in the couples' alternate shot tournament at his club. He/sheteed off on the first hole, a par four, and blistered a drive 300 yards down the middle of the fairway.Upon reaching the ball, the husband/wife said to his wifehusband "Just hit it toward the green,anywhere around there will be fine."

The wife/husband proceeded to shank the ball deep into the woods. Undaunted, the husband/wifesaid "That's OK, Sweetheart" and spent the full five minutes looking for the ball. He/she found it justin time, but in a horrible position. He/she played the shot of his life to get the ball within two feet ofthe hole. He/she told his wife/husband to knock the ball in. His wife/husband then proceeded to knockthe ball off the green and into a bunker.

Still maintaining composure, the husband/wife summoned all of his/her skill and holed the shot fromthe bunker. He/she took the ball out of the hole and while walking off the green, put his arm aroundhis wife/husband and calmly said, "Honey, that was a bogey five, and that's OK, but I think we cando better on the next hole" . To which she/he replied, "don't complain to me, only 2 of those 5 shotswere mine."

The couple, who began dating quietly in December 2008, spent the weekend at West Virginia's famedGreenbrier Resort. Roberts proposed on the golf course at the hotel, where he left a card on the pinand an engagement ring in the cup at the 18th hole.

=====================================================================MICHIGAN GOLF HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES THANK MENTORS- By Mike Caples=====================================================================It is easy to argue that an athlete will never find success without the help of others. Even though golf isan individual sport, the guidance and education provided by one’s parents, peers, and coaches arecrucial to their development.

Sue Ertl, John Traub, and Bill Zylstra will be inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame on May16 at Eagle Eye GC in Bath, Mich. And while they traveled their own unique paths to the success onand off the course, they all had plenty to say about the people most influential on their game.

Ertl, the head teaching professional at University Park Country Club in Sarasota, Florida, made aname for herself at both the collegiate and professional ranks. The Ionia, Mich. native was an All-American on a Michigan State University team that won three conference championships. Ertl was thefirst athlete to ever be named MSU Sportswoman of the Year in 1979. Her collegiate experiencespropelled her to 11 years on the LPGA Tour.

The MSU hall-of-famer – she was inducted the same year as Jud Heathcote and Steve Smith – creditedher parents for giving her the opportunity to play in the first place. After moving to Ionia as a child,her parents found a place for her to learn the game.

“We joined a nine-hole country club, the Ionia Country Club,” Ertl said. “There were a lot of kidsthat played at the same time, so I actually grew up in a very, very competitive atmosphere. My brother,as well as 20 others, mostly boys - it was great competition.”

On the professional level, Ertl pointed to two competitors as role models that greatly shaped how shebehaved on and off the course.

“Amy Alcott and Nancy Lopez…they were very competitive, focused, and definitely were very, verykind and polite to the people around them,” Ertl said. “So their golf game was important, but as wellas just being very personable to their crowd was a great example.”

Fellow inductee Traub made his name as both a player and an instructor, as well. He won the 1980National Club Professional Championship after shooting a 69 in the final round to overcome an eight-shot deficit. Traub won the Michigan PGA Championship in 1984, along with winning two MichiganPGA Match Play Championships. He served as the head professional at Detroit Golf Club for tenyears, from 1991-2001.

Traub pointed to his first boss on the instructional side of the game as a tremendous influence on hisgolf success.

“When I turned pro in 1973, I was working in Florida, and I met a guy named Tony Amaral,” Traubsaid. “He was from Woodbridge, Connecticut at a nice private club. So I met Tony…and I went towork for him for three years, so I give him a lot of credit for him giving me a start.”

“Then I met George Bayer, who was a noted touring professional and the head pro at Detroit GolfClub,” Traub continued. “I went to work for George in 1976. Those two guys gave me theopportunities to get myself into position to learn from good people, work in nice private clubs, andeventually after working for George I went back there and became the head golf professional until Iretired in 2001. “

While Ertl and Traub found success early in their careers, Zylstra came into his own in his fifties. Afterplaying for years in Michigan Publinx events, the former MSU Spartan exploded onto the nationalsenior amateur circuit. Zylstra won two Golfweek Senior Championships, and was named GolfweekTitleist National Senior Player of the Year in 2008 and 2009. He broke the USGA Senior Amateurtournament record in 2007 with a round of 65. And just last month, Zylstra won the prestigiousFlorida Senior Amateur. A dominant player here in Michigan, Zylstra was named the Golf Associationof Michigan’s Senior Player of the Year the last four years.

Zylstra credited his instructor, Paul Haase, for his success late in his golf life. The pair began workingtogether in 2000.

“Paul’s the only guy who has really ever told me how my swing works,” Zylstra said. “What thedrawbacks are, and what the drills are to respond to the drawbacks. When you understand how yourswing works, it’s kind of half the battle. You know what your bad shots are, and why you did it. Heput it in a way that nobody ever really had related it to. He made it simpler, let’s put it that way. Golf’sa hard enough game.”

Zylstra also pointed to his father for being the person who got him started, and he boasted about hisfather’s achievements in golf, as well.

“He qualified for two US Opens,” Zylstra said. “He got me started in the game, so you’ve got to givehim credit for that.”

And then, Zylstra said seven simple words about his dad that echoed what all three will be sayingabout their mentors and role models during their hall-of-fame inductions.

“He taught me how to play golf.”

"43 Years at the Masters" - By Jack BerryJack Berry is one of our nation's greatest golf writers and he has the plaques to prove it. Of late, hehas received the PGA Lifetime Journalism Award, The Matthews Lifetime Achievement Award andthis month, the Masters Major Achievement Award. During his half century of golf writing, Berry hasbeen at the Masters on 43 different occasions. This is a great read from a great writer.
