For the last five years, April has marked the time for our annual “bobble-head contest”. Directors can recog-nize their QF rep by completing the following sentence on our Facebook page:

“I Like My QF Rep because…” The winners receive a custom made bobble head doll of their QF rep AND themselves! The contest has been fun, heart-warming, sincere, and highly entertaining. We have seen poems, stories, and videos of the wonderful relationships directors have with their QF school representatives. We hope you will take a moment to recognize your QF rep in April. We know they appreciate all you do for us. Pictured are last year’s winners QF rep-Steve Rehlander & Elaina Sutton

from Winamac Jr/Sr High School immor-talized in the QF Bobblehead Hall of Fame.

“It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

By George Quinlan, Jr.

Spring is my favorite time of the year. Each Saturday, I get to visit several sites hosting band & orchestra festivals in our area. We get to hear “first-hand” the beautiful music made by your students with instruments we often provided. Without the work you do, our ware-house would be filled with mere “hunks of brass and wood”. You and the stu-dents supply the hard work and the Magic! We also get to see more frequent visi-tors this time of year. The legendary Doc Severinsen was in the area and

signed some posters com-memorating the event in Novem-ber of 2015. If you visit our Burr Ridge loca-tion, be sure to check it out! The good doctor

will celebrate his 90th birthday this year!

Phil Brown, Brass Product Manager for Conn-Selmer recently hosted John Nonaka and a group his company, Nonaka Boeki Co, Ltd. Of Yokohama, Japan for a tour of the Bach plant in Elkhart, a concert of the CSO, and a tour to QF-Burr Ridge! Thank you to Doug Adams-Hickory Creek MS in Frankfort for co-presenting “Recruiting by the Numbers (and other secrets to recruiting more low brass)” in January at the Illinois Music Educators Conference. We proudly co-sponsored “Bridging the Gap between Middle School and High School: Tips for En-suring a Seamless Instrumental Music Education” at IMEA-FW in January with Marcia Neel.

Dan Hough is our percussion specialist in Ft Wayne. A former percussionist and drum major with The Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps, he often consults with various high school bands and conducts Drum Major workshops. Dan specializes helping directors make wise choices for the percussion needs...and golf!

Spring is thankfully upon us! With that, it means many different things for educa-tors, depending on your location and school system. Solo and Ensemble is finished, ISSMA Jazz is complete, unless you're one of the eight state final-ists. (Congrats by the way) ISSMA Mid-dle School has wrapped up, and HS is deep into the throws of preparing for it! The Pageantry category is just now heat-ing up… Drums, Colorguard, and for some now Winds. To say the least, eve-ryone is still pretty Busy! Within the Percussion World, beginners especially, now is a great time to encour-age private lessons. Whether it's a first year beginner, or an 8th grader ready to start exploring drum set, finding a reputa-ble and dependable private teacher is key. You may have a high school stu-dent looking to expand their skills, pre-paring for the “next level” of education. So especially before school is out, and they're left to fend for themselves during the summer, help them out in finding someone. (It may even be Y ou!)

All instrumentalist can benefit greatly from private lessons, but speaking from experience, the benefits of private per-cussion lessons are tremendous. Keep-ing your key students, as well as your struggling students engaged, is one of the most important factors in retaining a healthy and produc-tive percussion sec-tion. Some other developmental possibilities

to consider would be supplemental method books. Row Loff's Snare Drummer’s Toolbox, and Mallet Player’s Toolbox are some of the more recent books to hit the music browsers. The old classics are still in vogue as well. The clas-sic Stick Control to this day, is a dependable go to book. Any of these can be added to the exist-ing method book you

may be using.

Most schools are using the standard Bell Kit. Today there are more options than ever to expand upon that idea. The Musser Xylo Kit is a 2.5 octave Pa-douk Wood bar Xylophone. Com-plete with rolling carry case, and

gum rubber drum pad. These are availa-ble on our standard rental/purchase plan, and will be viable for many years as an at home practice tool REMEMBER……. Just because your equipment’s drum heads are not broken, does NOT mean they don’t need to be replaced! Heads can have a pretty long shelf life, but there is a limit. Once the mylar loses it’s elasticity, tuning is pretty much a waste of time. If you have wise-ly invested in quality equipment, be sure to maximize it’s potential for quality sound. A new snare head, or new timpa-ni heads, can make a HUGE difference in sound quality, as well as ease of tuning. Especially this time of year, with High School ISSMA just around the corner!

Steve Reed (former director ) with Burke Lokey (cur rent director ) cele-

brating the hugely successful perfor-mance by Michigan’s Saint Joseph High School Orchestra students. Maestro Lok-

ey and the musicians of this orchestra gave one of the more “musical” perfor-

mances I have ever heard at a confer-ence. Congratulations to all on attaining

such a high level of musicianship. This listener was elated.

Final bows for Saint Joseph High School Orchestra following their performance at

ASTA Pittsburgh 2017.

Lloyd Palmiter, our String Specialist, brings extensive knowledge to our company stemming from his twenty years experience teaching orchestra and cello, serving as clinician and consultant for musical instrument and educational organizations, and countless hours of working with students and parents to assist in selecting the best instrument for their needs. He visits all store locations regularly and is available by appointment to individually help you and your students find just the right instru-ment. You’ll see Lloyd at conferences of ILMEA, IMEA, MENC, ASTA, Violin Society of America, and at the International Exhibition of violinmakers in Cremona, Italy, where he will be scouting to bring you the best quality instruments available from all over the world! Travels to the countries of origin and hand selecting the instruments and bows to be included in our showrooms make our instruments among

the best available today. We maintain a vigilant effort to assure our customers that Quinlan and Fabish Strings are always known for their value and quality.

Q&F

Experiencing the energy from the perfor-mances and clinic sessions at the Pitts-burgh ASTA conference reminded me of the vibrancy of your work. The confer-ence is successful on many fronts includ-ing the number of young musicians who perform there. Students who attain the level of distinction allowing that they be included in the conference brings a more mature and well mannered student to the conference. It was a pleasure to be among such fine young musicians to represent our future. I know that not everyone can go, so, I have a few pic-tures of the conference to share.

The view of the ASTA Pittsburgh regis-tration booth. Notice the yellow bridges in the background. The Three Sisters are three parallel, nearly identical self-anchored suspension bridges that cross the Allegheny River in downtown Pitts-burgh.

Vendors for everything “string” related displayed in the Exhibit Hall giving attendees an up close and personal op-portunity to mingle and see the new products and ideas presented in recent publications. It was great to see so many conference attendees visit the exhibit hall through-out the conference. Exhibitors fund a big part of any conference and visiting the exhibits helps all attendees and all ASTA members by encouraging ven-dor support.

Are you travelling with your orchestra this Spring? Protect your valuable basses!!
