Letter from the President: Letter from the President: Welcome June ! WHY shop local ? When you choose locally owned businesses for your shopping, you create a ripple effect. It starts with your own experience, and the benefits that you get from shopping at independent stores, like getting to rely on local retailers’ expertise. But then, the effects keep going. By shopping at local stores, you connect with your community. You strengthen your local economy. And finally, as the circle of ripples extends out, you cast a vote for the American dream. The GCC is BIG on community! Our #1 Goal is to offer supports and services to our businesses, creating a rich environment for them to grow. Along with their growth becomes needs. Housing, Supports, Resources, Education and retail needs. THINK of the big picture! OUR town has it all! 2 Reasons why small businesses are so important to communities. 1.Their owners have a vested interest in the community’s doing well. There is a symbiotic relationship between residents and small business owners. They really need each other. Small business owners have an active and personal interest in the well-being of the community. They live there. Their kids go to school there. They care about what happens. 2. Small businesses provide tremendous tax revenue Remember, thriving small businesses create thriving communities. When they succeed, there are more high-paying jobs. Citizens, in turn, can afford to shop locally. Neighborhoods and schools are strong. Quality of life improves across the board. That attracts more people to move into the community… and more small businesses to invest in it. It’s a virtuous cycle. The Chamber is here to support our businesses and assist our community in growing stronger! presented by the Guilderland Police Department

The subject of Active Shooter remains a hot topic for lawenforcement across the country. Beginning with the 1999Columbine school shooting, active shooter responses by first

responding law enforcement officers have continued to evolve and now include medical trainingto enhance potential lifesaving efforts. The Guilderland Police Department has trained all of itsofficers and paramedics in Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT)™which is the national standard for Active Shooter Police and EMS response. The CRASE course was developed by Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training(ALERRT)™ at Texas State University. The course was developed to provide strategies toindividuals, to help protect themselves and reduce the dangers faced during an active shooterevent. It is designed and built on the Avoid/Deny/Defend strategy, which has been developedas an easy to remember method for individuals to follow. Included in this training will be the human stress response, discussions on 100% accountabilityrelating to schools, addressing so common myths such as “hide and hope, and “playing dead,”which were found ineffective in the Virginia Tech shooting. CRASE will also address howconcealed handgun permit holders can better react to situations before and during the arrival oflaw enforcement, and what civilians can do within the three minutes it takes law enforcementto arrive to better protect themselves and others.

Meet Amanda LaForte!

Guilderland Chamber of CommerceSpring/Summer 2019 Intern

Hello, My name is Amanda. I have been a resident of the Guilderlandarea my entire life. I have a lot of family roots in this area. Mygrandmother grew up on Western Avenue where Dunkin Donuts istoday, and also right in front of the chamber office. She used to work inthe cafeteria at Farnsworth Middle School. My grandfather grew up inthe Voorheesville area before he married my grandmother in 1961 and

moved into their Guilderland home, where he still lives today. My mom and uncle are active Guilderland

Community members also. My mom works for Trustco Bank in Star Plaza and my uncle was a fireman forFort Hunter Fire Department for many years. Guilderland is definitely in my blood.

I graduated from Guilderland High School in 2008. I went on to complete the Teacher Education TransferProgram at Schenectady County Community College. In 2011 I transfer to the University at Albany tocomplete my bachelors degree in Psychology and graduated in May 2017.

I spent many years working in the childcare field for the Guilderland & Duanesburg YMCA Childcareprograms and also have worked in private daycare/preschool settings. Recently, I made a transition to adifferent career of working in the office field completing basic tasks for a friends construction business. I alsohave been self teaching myself the social media and website world.

In February of this year, Michelle the chamber president gave me the opportunity of a lifetime, interning atthe chamber office. In the few short months I have been here, I have learned and experienced many differentthings.

I have been actively helping with the upcoming large events. I recently designed the Annual Dinner Invitationand am working on the program for the event. I also have been busy working on the Military Awareness Expoand Hometown Heroes Banner Project. All amazing events and programs that are near and dear to me as manyof my family members and friends have served for our country. I can’t wait to see the outcome of all theseevents in the coming weeks and to be able to share my experience in the future!

One of the large ongoing projects I have been working on is the chambers website and Facebook page. Iredesigned and updated the chamber website with the help of Darcy Knapp of SEO Web Mechanics and someof the other wonderful chamber/ community members. We now have a user friendly updated website and havereceived so many wonderful comments about it.

I also have been busy helping with the Facebook page. Since I started monitoring in the page in February wehave gained a lot more followers and engagement from our chamber & community members. We are one of thehigher performing chamber members in terms of social media. It is truly amazing to watch us grow.

I am a woman of many talents and have many hobbies. I love camping in the Adirondacks with my familyeach summer. I love arts & crafts and do it yourself type of projects.

I also have a love for antique machinery, having grown up around antique cars, tractors and engines. I am anactive member of the Hudson Mohawk Chapter Pioneer Gas Engine Association, Inc. aka “Gas Up” inSchoharie, NY. I manage our social media accounts, website and our Head Quarters Store. In January 2019 Iwas elected club secretary and have added on office tasks to my list of duties and responsibilites. Each yearthe second and third weekends of June we host a event showcasing all forms of antique machinery from theIndustrial Revolution time period. Each year we have thousands of people attend from all over to witnesshistory in action. For more information about this organization and Gas Up 2019, checkout our facebook pagewww.facebook.com/gasup. This year’s show will take place June 8, 9 & 15, 16.
