Principal’s ReportCambrai Primary School is located between the Murray lands and the Barrossa in the Mahn Valley. It has a current enrolmentof 42 student from R- 7. There are 3 classes ---- Rec - year 2, years 3-5 and years 5-7. We maintain very small classsizes. There is a well equipped on site Kindergarten with enrollments of 7, a flourishing playgroup run by an SSO andOccasional Care. We are a cat 2 school with 16% ATSI enrollment. There is also a colorful, vibrant community Library on site. The school is the custodian of 'Meldanda'. A beautiful 40 h environmental site with the Marne River flowing through. This areais the focus of our STEM learning and the whole school walk to do their learning in this natural environment weekly in terms 2and 3 - other terms - weather permitting. The school has a thriving garden and orchard which provide produce for jams andpreserves. We also grow roses and native plants for the community. The community pool is over the road and used by the school throughout the hotter months at lunchtimes and for lessons. The school is involved in the community at every opportunity and provides a get together room for community members tomeet.Last year was a very important year for Cambrai School with the transition to a Primary School after many years as asuccessful Area School. Many of our current parents had attended the Area School and it was an emotional time not only forthe students, but the community. One of the results of the transition was the loss of many loved and respected staff members. The new structure required a change in the format of many popular annual events such as sports days and fun runs etc. It wasimportant that the new structure was seen as having positive outcomes for students to move the focus away from the obviousnegative consequences.Initially I was placed in Cambrai to support the school through an unexpected change in leadership. I fell in love with thestudents and the community and fortunately won the position as principal for a 5 year tenure. It was an extremely important time for the school, building positive foundations to underpin the way forward. There were manyaspects needing to be reviewed in the light of now being a Primary School. In the first two terms we changed the logo, theuniform, changed the hours of the school day, timetables, worked with DECD on the building upgrade, changed bus routesand began work on the policies and procedures. Some of these will continue to be developed in 2018. The building upgrade willbe beginning soon and the new sign finalised this term.
Early in term 3 the school underwent the DECD External Review process. The review findings were very positive andencouraging - they felt that Cambrai was on the right path and had a bright future. They were impressed with the responses ofthe students when asked about their learning and the positive attitude of the school community. The School was awarded a 4year return which was very pleasing.Their 3 directives for the future of Cambrai are: .• Ensure challenge for all learners by focusing on task design to develop critical and creative thinking.• Develop learning intentions based on the Aust. Curriculum . Use data, work samples and formative assessment to informdevelopment of individualised learning priorities.• Build consistent whole school pedagogy by staff sharing learning. Staff to trial and implement strategies which are supportedby evidence in line with partnership objectives. These directives were all in areas that we had already identified and are the focus of our site improvement plan.We are focusing on implementing these directives over the course of the next 4 years.
At Cambrai we want the students to 'Dream Big": - children need to have goals and aspirations for the future. We have acareers focus each term when we invite different workers in to talk to students about their jobs and in particular what they usethat they learnt at school. We want the children to understand why school is important.
There are so many positives for 2017 that I will just dot point a few• Fun run -at Meldanda• Sports day• Combined school sports day• Camp - whole school camp in Adelaide• Choir - students performed at the Festival of Choirs• Concert- an amazing extravaganza to rival any professional production.• Swimming at lunch times• Stem learning at Meldanda and Meldanda family camp out• Animal a tronics - STEM learning involving robotics• Emu tree Music- creating music on computers and performing to the school• Careers based learning• Nature play• Too many more to mentionI can not finish without commenting on our wonderful volunteers and the parent support the school receives. Without thiseverything would be more difficult and some things impossible. Thank you for a wonderful year.2018 will be an exciting year with two new staff members and consolidation of our plans for the future.
CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT 2017
2017 saw our school begin its transition from an Area school to Cambrai Primary School and I believe that this year has beenone of the smoothest and most settled years that we have had for our students in a long time. We have been so very fortunateto have had the guidance and leadership of our wonderful new principal Michele Holloway as we enter this new era as a schoolcommunity.Michele has already made such an enormous impact on our school and wider community with her passion, empathy and herpersistence. She is genuinely loved by all of the students, and I can speak personally when I say that I know parents very muchappreciate her honesty, “can-do” attitude and her approachable style of leadership. We all look forward to continuing on thisjourney with Michele. From a Governing Council point of view, Michele has been so supportive, proactive and encouraging.Throughout the year we have held numerous fundraising events as a Governing Council – every member of Council supportedand helped with fundraising in one way or another and this is always appreciated. A number of boat licence evenings wereheld, with thanks again to Ian Hunter for conducting these. We have also held our regular flower bulb, Mother’s and Father’sDay stalls and bakery drives which were well received, as always. A big thank you to all families who have made thesefundraising efforts a success.I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to my fellow councilors for their tireless efforts once again this year. Onbehalf of the Governing Council, I would also like to say a big thank you to our teaching and support staff. It has been a yearfilled with change and difference, and as parents and councilors we acknowledge your efforts in educating, supporting andencouraging our students. As we move toward the end of the school year, I’d like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful holiday seasonwith your families and loved ones. I look forward to an exciting, successful and positive 2018 at Cambrai Primary School.

In 2017 the Site Improvement Plan is centered on developing Powerful Learners through the 3 focus areas- Pedagogical shift ,literacy and numeracy. The focus on teachers methodology in the classroom encompasses all curriculum areas and the aim is to encourage a growthmind set and an 'ask don't tell' teacher approach.Literacy -The training of all staff in the Big 6 of reading was undertaken. We raised our expectations of Running Record levelsto be achieved. Jolly Phonics and Grammar were accepted as the foundation programs for all year levels.Numeracy- investigation of other sites best practice and training staff in the Big Ideas in Number. We worked on developing awhole school approach and the integration of good pedagogy in to our maths lessons.
In term 3 Cambrai Primary underwent an External Review- the purpose of this is to support schools to raise achievementand sustain high performance. The review team noted that it is very evident that the school is held in high importance by the community and that despite thesignificant changes the school has undergone that there is a real sense of positivity about the schools future direction. There isa deliberate focus on improvement through consultative and transparent processes. The panel identifies 3 areas for growth:
1 Ensure challenge for all learners by collaboratively focusing on learning and task design that intentionally developscritical and creative thinking.
2 Build student agency by sharing learning intentions from the Australian curriculum Achievement standards and usingdata, formative assessment and student work samples as evidence of learning to target teaching and personalise learning.
3 Build consistent and school wide pedagogy by developing staff as a professional learning community thatsystematically trial, implements and embeds evidence based strategies to improve practice in line with site and partnershippriorities. These directives now underpin the future directions of the school through targets and professional development.
The positive impact of PBL ( Positve Behaviour for Learning) has continued in 2017. The school community weresurveyed and their responses resulted in more regular and consistent recognition of children's efforts. The 'Magpie Shop' isopen every day and students contribute ideas for items. There is a school wide agreement on the allocation of points andregular recognition at assemblies. Our focus is strongly on behaviour change and this occurs when students want to be atschool. There is positive pressure from their peers and support from staff to work within the school behaviour code. We havevery few rules and the expectation is that students use 'Common Sense'. The Golden Rule is the foundation of all responsesto inappropriate behaviour. There were only 2 suspensions and two take homes required in 2017. The school meet everymorning for 'Morning Muster' and the focus skill is reinforced eg saying 'excuse me' or saying 'hello' to people you see. Thereis a calm and respectful 'feel' in the yard and classrooms. The Governing Council contribute to the success of the MagpieShop.Running record data showed 100% of year 1 students achieved well above SEA with 90% reaching levels in the twenties.. Yr 2 data will be a focus for improvement in 2018.The data or years 3 and 5 NAPLAN indicate that there has been an improvement or maintenance over time in those yearlevels but our assessments show that basic sentence structure and grammar are areas of concern. We have a site agreementto use Jolly Grammar as a foundation for all year levels in 2018.
Big Ideas in number will be the foundation of Maths improvement in 2018 beginning with the testing of all students.
As a school which often has fewer than 10 students eligible to sit NAPLAN in each year level, small changes in the numbers ofstudents can cause large changes in the percentages shown in the graphs. Where there are fewer than 5 studentscomparative data is not available as the numbers are too small for meaningful analysis. This makes it difficult to make reliableconclusions on the implications on SIP strategies over time.Running record data has highlighted a discrepancy in the recording of the data which has resulted in our year two results notreflecting the achievements of the children. As a result in 2018 all staff will be retrained in the taking of records and the analysisof the results.
In Reading- students achieving the state expected achievement: - SEA: When tracking the same students from year 3 to yr5 there was an improvement of 40% in the number of students reaching or passing the state expectation. Tracking the samestudents from year 5 - 7 showed that the same students reached the expectation. While it is pleasing there was no reductionour aim will be to more more students into this group in future years.
Numeracy: In 2015 43 % of students achieved SEA . When tracking the same students in 2018 86% achieved SEA.This trend is very pleasing. We aim to replicate this in the students from years 3 - 5.
Currently there are increasing numbers of students achieving results in the higher bands in year 3. Our 2018 Site ImprovementPlan (SIP) aims to ensure that these high achieving students remain in the higher bands throughout their schooling. The aim is also to move students into the higher bands by increasing their learning by greater than 12 months. Historically ourresults have been impacted by students leaving due to the restructuring of the school.
It is very pleasing that in Reading and Numeracy Cambrai is achieving results that place our students in the middle or abovethe state averages.
Preschool Attendance
Throughout 2017 all attendances have been stable and regular. All absences, usually low level illnesses, were promptly explained by parents either by telephone or through writtencommunication. The patterned absences of one family effect our data significantly. These absences were unavoidable.During Terms 3 & 4, 6 children were enrolled in 10 sessions per fortnight.50% preschool children commuted to this service by private vehicles.33% preschool children commuted to this service by bus.17% live in Cambrai and walked to preschool.
School Attendance:Absences are followed up daily and patterns noted and investigated. Our attendance is impacted by the transientnature of some families with one family enrolling but not attending and required Department intervention to locateand prompt attendance at a new school. Attendance is supported by our ACEO and PCW.
The Preschool is re building from the loss of future enrollments due to the closure of the high school and youngchildren following siblings to other sites. We regularly have 15 - 20 participants in the playgroup with manyindicating that Cambrai will be their preferred Preschool in future years. A thriving Pre school is essential to theongoing growth of the Primary school and the community support is very strong. The success of the early entry forATSI children is to be noted. The extra time has supported the targeted approach to speech and languagedevelopment.
The focus has been very strongly on the development of self regulation. We do not want to manage behavior -rather we want behaviour change. 'Rules' have been rationalized with the expectation that students make positivechoices. The development of a positive, supportive climate encourages children to work through issues with thesupport of their peers and staff. Students know there is a process for them to seek support and that they will belistened to. This has resulted in only 2 suspensions and 2 take homes involving only 2 students.Meeting each morning sets the tone and is an opportunity to reinforce the skills we are focusing on.The school has a calm, relaxed atmosphere commented on by all visitors.
The well being and Engagement survey of our middle and upper primary students provides important indicators ofthe success of the programs and the culture of the school.
Cambrai students indicated extremely high positive feelings in the areas of 'Happiness' 'Perseverance','School belonging' and 'Emotional regulation' with results 20 - 40 % higher than the state average. 100% ofstudents indicated that they had positive relationships with adults at school and that the school climate was positive- this when compared to the state average of 56% is outstanding and reflects the connection of the school with thestudents. The only areas which were not above the state were those of 'worries 'and 'emotional engagement withthe teacher'. The second of these has been addressed in 2018 and indicators showed a marked improvementalready in this area. There were 0% of students who felt that there was any form or social harassment at this school! The school will continue to provide a safe, supportive, environment for our students as this survey shows thatdespite being a small Cat. 2 school we are outstanding in our cohesive approach to Student Wellbeing.
The Staff opinion survey indicated a very high commitment to the school and a passion for teaching. It also indicated a level of concern about the work load and job life balance. I can understand this as all the staffare, without exception, dedicated and committed to Cambrai. The area identified for attentioin was in the are ofcommunication.
Parent Survey There were 8 responses to the survey and they largely mirrored the student responses being very happy with theclimate of the school and acknowledging that their child is happy here They also indicated concerns with someaspects of teaching style, and as with the student survey - these have been addressed. Several parents did not feelcomfortable approaching a teacher with a concern and felt that their child's strengths were not being sufficientlyacknowledged. We will be aiming for a far greater engagement with the survey in 2018.
All ancillary staff and volunteers undergo the DCSI Criminal History Screening prior to being able to work in ourschool or with children at Meldanda. All teaching staff qualifications are up to date.
As the high school component was closed end of 2016 - 2017 was the first year as a Primary school. Some Primary aged students moved with older siblings to Barossa schools due to inability to get two children to twodifferent schools. Buses taking primary students to the Barossa continues to be a matter of concern. Accessingschools in rural locations is an ongoing issue. Year 7 students accessed high school at Swan Reach Area School -2 and 1 primary aged child due to transport.2 to an independent high school, 2 to Nurrioopta High and 1 to Open Access due to transport.
