ABOUT MICHELANGELO
• He was a great Italian sculptor, painter, architect and poet.
• He was born near Florence in Italy in 1475.
• As a young boy he showed great artistic talent and was apprenticed to Ghiflando.
• Lorenzo de Medici recognized his talents and became his patron and treated him as a member of his family.
ABOUT MICHELANGELO
• When Lorenzo died, Michelangelo moved to Rome. There he sculpted the Pieta (the pitty) a marble statue of the dead Christ in his mother's arms.
• Michelangelo later returned to Florence and sculpted a five metre high statue of the biblical character David.
ABOUT MICHELANGELO
• Back in Rome Michelangelo was hired by Pope Jullius II to paint scenes from the Old Testament on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It's a fresco this means painting on wet plaster it took four years to complete.
• Michelangelo also painted The Last Judgment behind the alter of the Sistine Chapel.
ABOUT MICHELANGELO
• Before his death he designed the great dome of St. Peters Basilica. This shows that he was a gifted architect as well as a great sculptor and painter.
• Michelangelo died and was buried in Rome at the age of 89. He was reburied in Florence.
