PLAYING WITH REALITY
In China and Korea, men have died after 3 days non stop gaming online without feeding , drinking, nor sleeping...
In Japan , more and more young adults NEVER leave their room. They live and communicate exclusively online.
HIKIKOMORI
What does it mean to be a person ?
Being human is a combination of :
-‐ a physical self inducing REALITY
-‐ a non physical self inducing FICTION
Many MOO users regard their MOO identities as more real than their ROL
selves
MOO: Multi users domainsObject Oriented / ROL: Rest Of Life
Because they don’t always enjoy being present as their physical self
What does it mean to be present?
Presence is not determined by immediate location
There has to be a medium so that a contact is established for one to be
present
This medium is called the interface
What is an interface ?
A fluid boundary between reality and fiction
Television, books , cinemas... are « passive », one way interfaces involving
only the NON physical self
The interactive screen is an « active » two way interface also involving only
the NON physical self
Another interface is a social consensus IRL ( In Real Life )
But the most powerful fiction interface is when...
... the whole person is immersed in a fiction world, physically as
well as non physically :
« Kinect » types of entertainment where direct physical body movements are the interface
IVRE (Immersive Virtual Reality
Environments) in which the individual
actually moves around and interacts physically
Nordic LARPs (Live Action Role Play):
where the actors and the audience are the same people
« Hamlet » role played and staged in the 20’s in a huge cellar in Copenhaguen
« JUST A LITTLE LOVING » ended with 60 people in tears having to
say farewell to their characters
Hybrid stories and transmedia experiences are the same as
books and films :
they satisfy our essential need to transcend and escape our physical dimension
They just use interactivity and participation for a more immersive
experience:
THE ADDED POWER OF HYBRID FICTION
Increases the length of a fiction
experience , even allowing permanent immersion
THE ADDED POWER OF HYBRID FICTION
Makes the fiction experience look and feel closer to physical reality
THE ADDED POWER OF HYBRID FICTION
Allows sharing a real time
fictional experience with others through online networks
THE ADDED POWER OF HYBRID FICTION
Offers an escape from a bleak future
But ...
We are not ready to give up physical reality as the consensus one yet
What we call reality feels real because we know we eventually die
Right now, physical reality rules over all other fiction realities...
... and playing with it raises serious ethical issues :
people do not like the feeling of being cheated, abused or lied to
Breaking the rules of a consensus reality is a social sacrilege
THE TRUTH ABOUT MARIKA AUDIENCE STRUCTURE
300 000 for tv serie
30 000 for web serie
3 000 for online gaming
300 for real life events
30 for hardcore UGC gaming
THE TRUTH ABOUT MARIKA
A study conducted after the event
showed that about 35 % of the
audience/ participants felt cheated
and abused when learning it was all
indeed fiction
Our stories will have to remain fictions for a while.
Until we feel more at ease navigating different realities.
Which will be soon.
The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.
