For this reason alone trying to find a correct, and working, AM or AM/FM factory radio is difficult at best. For the restorer anything other than a “factory stock” unit isn’t a consideration, so restorers will frequent swap meets, try to find one at their local “you-pull-it” salvage yard, or browse eBay.

With factory radios becoming harder to find, vendors will charge a premium and those found on eBay can run $100-plus for a good AM unit, and $250-and-up for a premium AM/FM example. We were able to find two radios at our local salvage yard for $10 each, although the owner didn’t even allow us to check them out prior to purchase. We figured at least one or the other would

work, and the price was right. However, they needed to be bench tested, cleaned and restored.

Our tester is one of two Canadian-built Phillips Mark 1 solid-state AM radios that we removed from 1971 and ’72 Chargers, respectively. The radios are correct for all ‘71-‘74 B-body Mopars. Both junked cars had been salvaged years ago and had minimal glass damage so we felt that the radios were for the most part protected from the elements. Don’t waste your time pulling a radio from a salvaged car that has had the glass removed; it’s probably trashed due to exposure.

Following an initial checkout to determine their working condition, we’ll eventually restore both and pick

the best of the two to install in our ‘71 Charger Super Bee project car that we’re currently restoring.

Our radio restoration will involve a thorough cleaning and detail; lubricating the on/off switch volume control; lubricating station presets and push button operation; repainting the front surround and station indicator; polishing the plastic face plate; and final reassembly and bench test. This may seem like a lot of work, but will actually only take a few hours to complete and doesn’t involve any special training or expertise. The end result should be a nicely restored stock radio you can be proud of. Follow along as we perform each step of the restoration process.
