The University of Texas System idened an ur-

gent need to upgrade an original building on its

Dallas campus - The Founders Building, a 106,000

sf structure built in the 1960s. The University set

programming objecves for an adapve reuse of

    this exisng wet lab facility.

The Universitys operaonal goals were to maxi-

mize use of space in a building that had limited ef-

ciency because central ulity corridors occupied

each oor, and to transform the building into a stu-

    dent/faculty hub for undergraduate teaching.

The new design developed new HVAC systems on

the roof that feeds through the building, thereby

eliminang ulity corridors on the oors and maxi-

    mizing available classroom space.

The design enhanced the buildings appearance

with a new entry connecon to the east, which

provided new student gathering spaces that over-

look the building entry and the mall. The project

also provided new classroom space, faculty oce

suites, computer laboratories, and general phys-

ics teaching laboratories in a totally new environ-

    ment.

The exterior is further enhanced by the use of

mul-color LED lighng which is used to announce

    campus events and sports victories.

Dallas County Community College District desired

to expand its North Lake College campus with a

satellite facility, entled the South Campus. This

    expansion provides convenient entry-level classes

in the area of the City of Irving which was previ-

ously underserved. The building contains class-

rooms, computer and science labs, a GED tesng

suite, library, and bookstore along with adminis -

trave oces. Addionally, a large mulpurpose

room serves as either a lecture space or as a com-

    munity event space.

The site was a parcularly unique feature of this

project. The original property was bisected by

a stream and contained an abandoned shop-

ping center and parking lot. Demolion of these

items, along with the enhancement of the exisng

stream and design of addional green space, not

only added value to the space but is now more vi-

    sually appealing.

A master plan of the site was created for this ex-

pansion of the college which envisions a second

and third academic building in the future.

The twenty-one acre site for this new campus pre-

sented two principal challenges. First, a Federally

cered Wetland and Waters of the United States

ow through the center of the site, and second,

the grade rises over one full story toward the

south. The design team worked with the Corps of

Engineers to preserve the wetlands, and incorpo -

rate the natural grade changes. Overlooking the

wetlands, the school allows the natural heart of

the site to form an integral part of the childrens

educaon. The school was designed to incorpo -

rate the team concept of teaching using pods of

classrooms. Each pod contains four classrooms, a

science classroom, and dedicated locker vesbules

and a Commons classroom that funcons as a

computer lab. Six pods are located on each of two

levels, allowing separaon by grade level. A circu-

laon spine borders the pods with expansive views

to the wetlands. A one story building on the south-

ern poron of the site serves as the public entry.

It houses the cafeteria, media center, administra-

on, and arts/music classrooms, and is connected

to the classroom building by an enclosed bridge

spanning the wetlands. The gymnasium and locker

rooms are in a third building terminang the north

    end of the spine.

Irving ISD chose to expand its oerings to three

and four year old children in Early Childhood cen-

ters. Each center was designed in a L shape and

includes 18 classrooms, a motor skills room, me-

dia room/library, mulpurpose room with a full

service kitchen, and administrave oces with a

    clinic.

    Each classroom provides networked computers,

a television, cubbyholes for storage, a childrens

rest room, sinks, and a separate entrance to the

pao. Classrooms are paired and share a p ao and

common kitchenee/art space. Three of the class-

rooms are designed to meet the requirements for

teaching children with special needs. The scope of

work for these projects also included the selecon

of xtures, furniture, and equipment for all areas.

The schools were adapted from an original proto-

type. Three schools were built - each adapted to

    its unique site.

St. Thomas Aquinas is a Dallas Catholic church and

school. To accommodate growth, the school de-

sired a master plan which looked at growth poten-

    al and development opons.

Subsequent to the master plan, the school desired

a new and separate classroom building for the

upper classes, grades 6-8. The two-story middle

    school addion would include administraon,

classrooms and labs, cafeteria with stage, kitchen,

    drama, gymnasium, and chapel.

The design of the facility would complement the

gothic character of the campus without being

overly tradional. The second oor would extend

over the rst to create a shaded and sheltered

    area adjacent to the cafeteria.

A design was also developed to accommodate

the schools younger children at a nearby closed

school to be purchased by the church. Like the

primary plan on the church campus, the closed

school for the younger children required plans for

    accessibility and TAS compliance.

Midway ISD is a small independent school district

south of Waco, Texas. To accommodate enroll-

ment growth and curriculum needs the district

required a new h and sixth grade intermediate

school and a theater complex as part of the ex -

Woodgate has the form of a long bar. Each grade

occupies its respecve side of the bar. The cafeto-

rium and library radiate out from the center of the

bar. Administraon occupies a circle at the center

of the bar between each grade. Banded brick of

dierent sizes provide a sense of scale and drama

to the exterior. Bold yellow canopies and green

columns provide further character and identy.

The Performing Arts Center provides space for

high school producons and performances and

supports meengs and gatherings for the larger

community. The Center seats 1,100 and features a

    2010

The Lamplighter School is a highly respected pri-

vate school in Dallas, Texas. The original plan was

developed by Architect ONeil Ford and features

low height, small scale buildings, classroom pods,

and a connecon to nature and landscape.

The school features two unusual features which

are very important to the school: a barn and ani-

mal pen for a cow, pigs, and chickens, and a read-

ing well in each classroom where kids and teach-

er sit together in a ered depression to read and

    discuss material.

The Facility Study explored exisng facility ca -

pacies and how the classrooms and/or number

of classrooms could expand to accommodate ad-

dional students in a manner sympathec to the

    original plan.

The study prepared site and plan drawings to il-

lustrate design opons. In addion, charts and

graphs were created to communicate quantave

    data.

The three-level Community Life Center houses a

Despite its large size, the mul-purpose facility

respects the context of the campus and the resi -

denal area, with adherence to newly established

height restricons and a Georgian architectural

style that harmonizes with its surroundings. The

great hall features superior technology integra-

on. Rather than solely being a centerpiece of the

room, the technology supports the gamut of ac-

vies in the space. On one hand, reinforcing and

supporng speakers and presentaons, and on

the other, engaging audiences with a high power

audio, video, and lighng experience. Also, the

plan improved exisng trac condions by incor-

porang a 750-car parking garage under the CLC.

The union between the CLC and the exisng cam-

pus is an open two-story 5,000 sf gathering space.

The plan also provides addional pedestrian cir-

culaon via an underground concourse that links

several campus buildings. As a result, the campus

maintains large areas of green space and its grace-

ful atmosphere, an ambiance appreciated by both

Stonebriar Church is a fast growing community

in Frisco, Texas. A new 3,000-seat worship cen-

ter is organized around an atrium and fellowship

space where the congregaon can gather before

and aer worship. Designed in the Romanesque

style, the fundamental concept of the design is of

a contemporary church that conveys the character

and feeling of more tradional churches. Despite

the size of the facility, tradional forms and details

such as gabled roofs, arched windows, and stone

accents provide a sense of scale and character of-

ten missing in large-scale theater style churches.

Wide corridors, conducive to both circulaon

and gathering, support the addion and allow for

future expansion along a generous central con-

course. Addional surface parking was designed

    to support the expansion.

The second phase, 2-story 60,000 sf childrens

educaon building features 12 Nursery rooms,

19 Early Childhood rooms, an Indoor Play area,

a central assembly space, a new playground,

electronic check-in service hubs and a sepa-

The Episcopal Church of the Incarnaon is a very

tradional neo-gothic church in Dallas, Texas. The

campus is nearly ninety years old and character-

ized by brick and cast-stone tracery and arches.

The church needed addional educaon, music,

    and administraon space. Furthermore, brides

needed a covered path to the front of the church

    to facilitate weddings.

The addion is small but provided addional space

and elevated the character of some older, at-

roofed buildings which did not maintain the gothic

style of the church. The addion wrapped around

the east facade and a new slate roof and parapet

was developed over the exisng structure.

Interior renovaons incorporated the gothic style

in the interior and erased signs of dated and red

    renovaons from the early 70s.

The new arcade springs from the character of the

exisng church. Highly detailed and decorave

arches connect an exisng church entrance to a

newly created opening at the church narthex.

The Family Life Center expansion expands the

church facilies to the north. The addion in-

    cludes a mul-purpose fellowship hall and a

kitchen opening onto a new two story commons

that becomes the central circulaon point for the

church. Also in the new program are spaces for

preschool, elementary, and youth. The key space

of the new addion is the central spine. The vault-

ed two-story space creates a new gathering space

for the church community - a place to share cof-

    fee, greengs, and conversaons.

The exterior design complements the exisng fa-

announces the once hidden church to the commu-

    Compleon Date

    2010

Munger Place is both old and new. While the

Munger Place Church building is approaching 100

years old, a local church wished to create a new

church experience focused on community and

music. Renovaons were needed before new el-

ements could be introduced to bring the church

    back to life.

The client did not want a sanized new church.

Keeping a sense of age and character was impor-

tant. Careful and select renovaons restored the

facility. Elsewhere, casework and paneling were

re-purposed to create coee bars and new hall

counters. Aged plexiglass was removed from the

beauful stained glass to allow the beauful light

to again enter the sanctuary. New administrave

and childrens facilies were created in the boom

    oor.

Suspended lighng trusses and linear array speak-

ers bring a contemporary but funcon edge to the

space. A new rear projecon screen was created

within the organ chamber. Accessibility issues

    were addressed in the renovaon.

An old cartoon shows a painter painng himself

a door and leaves the room...Unfortunately, con-

strucon is less forgiving. The best projects have a

vision for growth, change, and opmal ulizaon

for years to come. Master planning is a process by

which the needs and wants of a client can be con -

templated over me before construcon. Spaces

can be right sized and buildings correctly located

before expensive drawings are commissioned or

    dirt turned.

The best master plans are a tremendous value.

When construcon costs can exceed $200 per

square foot, the master plan can pay for itself by

idenfying just a few spaces not to build. Lastly,

experience has shown that master plans are a

very good method for a client to develop sta or

meeng and gathering rooms, and short-termapartments.

The project began by developing planned develop-ment documents to create a site adjacent to thechurch. Floor plans and exterior character weredeveloped aer very close consultaon with the

client. A Mediterranean style was selected to

complement the adjacent church and the charac -ter demands required by the city. Arches, clay leroofs, and distressed stucco and stone would es -tablish the tradional image.

The site required careful aenon to storm watermanagement. To accommodate expected waterretenon, half the site water would be stored un-derground. The other half of the water would bediverted to an ornamental pond at the corner ofthe site adjacent to a major city intersecon.

The exterior design was developed in conjunconwith Fusch Architects.
