Mandatory 4-H Advisor Trainings and Updates
All advisors are required to attend a volunteer training every two years - this is a Miami
County 4-H Policy. However, a new policy has been issued from the State requiring man-
datory annual training beginning in 2015 for all 4-H volunteers. This supersedes the Miami
County 4-H Policy. The State training will be at the beginning of each 4-H Advisor Update.
Additional updates have been scheduled throughout the county for your convenience.

2015 Quality Assurance Information
GENERAL INFORMATION
All market and lactating animal exhibitors must attend a Quali-ty Assurance Session within the State of Ohio in order to ex-hibit an animal at the Miami County Fair. Exhibitors of swine must also receive PQA certification with the required Quality Assurance. The session must be conducted by a qualified instructor. Exhibitors ages 12-18 have the option to take a test given by a qualified instructor to test out of Quality Assurance.
TEST OUT OPTION
There are two separate tests. One for 12-14 year olds and
one for 15-18 year olds (Age as of January 1st). If you test
out when you are 12, 13, or 14, you will have to test again
when you turn 15.
The test is 50 multiple choice questions and you must score at
least a 70% (35 out of 50). The test is given in two categories
- large (sheep, beef, swine, goats, and dairy) and small
(poultry and rabbits) animals. If you exhibit in both, you can
choose which test to take.
The testing will be held at the Fairgrounds in the Secretary’s
Office on two dates:
February 23rd from 6:30pm-8:30pm *Pre-register
by February 20th
February 28th from 9am-11am *Pre-register by
February 25th
Please call the Extension office at 440-3945, Option 1 to
register. You only get one chance to pass the test each year.
If you do not pass, then you must attend a regular Quality
Assurance session.
QUALITY ASSURANCE SESSIONS
The regular Quality Assurance sessions will be held in the Duke Lundgard Building on:
Saturday, March 7 @ 10am & 2pm
Monday, April 13 @ 6:30pm
Monday, April 27 @ 6:30pm
Saturday, May 2 @ 10am & 2pm
There is no pre-registration required for the regular Q.A. sessions.
Exhibitor is responsible for signing in and out at these sessions. This is your only way to show attendance. Parents of exhibitors are NOT required to attend Quality Assurance Sessions.
To insure that participants are instructed in all required ma-terials, youth must arrive on time for the sessions. Doors will be locked 5 minutes after the sessions begin. Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
A make up session will be held on Tuesday, June 9 at 6:30pm for a fee of $30.00 (per family). You must pre-register for this session by June 5. Call 440-3945, Option 1 to register.
We will be offering Quality Assurance to certain clubs on certain dates to try to minimize overcrowding at any one session. If you cannot attend on your club’s scheduled date, then please feel free to attend any of the other regular sessions. However, you must pre-register to attend an-other session. This pre-registration must be done prior to your club’s scheduled date.
You have the option of attending a Quality Assurance ses-sion outside of Miami County. Those who choose to attend QA & PQA sessions given by other instructors must provide a certificate form from the instructor. The form must state the instructor’s name, location, date of session and instruc-tor’s phone number. This form is to be submitted to the Fairgrounds with your entry form no later than June 1. It is your responsibility to provide the form at the time of your entries. Cattle exhibitor entry forms were due January 1st, but those exhibitors must still turn in their QA certifi-cates by the June 1 deadline. Exhibitors not providing Qual-ity Assurance certificates will not be able to exhibit their animals at the Miami County Fair.
REMEMBER: If you are unable to attend on your club’s scheduled date, you need to pre-register for another ses-sion. This pre-registration must be done prior to your club’s scheduled date. Please call the Extension Office at 440-3945, Option 1 to pre-register. Exhibitor is responsible for signing in and out at these sessions. Signing is the only
way to show your attendance!
MAKE UP SESSION
Please plan ahead. A make up session will be held on Tues-day, June 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the Secretary’s Office for a fee of $30.00 (per family). Exhibitor must pre-register for this ses-sion by June 5th by contacting the Extension Office.

4-H Trips
Important Horse Updates
There are several important updates and changes for the 4-H horse program this year that will be presented at 4-H Horse Advi-sor Training on January 31st. This information is available on horse.osu.edu or in the Uniform Rules for 4-H Horse Shows.
1. 4-H Horse Advisor Training – Saturday, January 31st. The registration deadline is January 15th.
2. 4-H Horse Program Recognition Banquet – Saturday, January 31st (the evening of Advisor Training to reduce the number of trips to Columbus). This event is open to all 4-H (horse) youth, they do not have to be state event winners or partici-pants. The registration fee is $20 per person and the registration deadline is January 10th.
3. The 2015 calendar is online at horse.osu.edu along with registration forms and event information.
4. The state horse judging contest and hippology contest will be a combined event this year. Kids will be able to participate in one or both events. The event will take place on Monday, June 15th at the Union County Fairgrounds in Marysville, Ohio. The Ohio State Fair will continue to be the sponsor of the horse judging contest.
5. There is a new Uniform Rules for 4-H Horse Shows. Hard copies are available on estores and a downloadable PDF is sup-posed to be available for purchase but is not available at this time. The changes are highlighted this year but please note that deletions have not been highlighted. The next planned update of the rulebook will not be until 2018. At that time, an Academy (Lesson) Horse Division may be included. If you know of any advisors that have large lesson barn programs, please share their names and contact information with Columbus.
6. There are several new classes/divisions for 4-H horse shows, including the Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Show. a. Small Equine Hunter (no bridles allowed – halter and leads only) b. Small Equine Jumper (no bridles allowed – halter and leads only) c. Western Dressage (These are not traditional PAS classes. The qualifying requirements are similar to Dressage classes.)
d. Ranch Pleasure (This is a rail class, not a pattern class. A horse may not enter in both Western Pleasure and Ranch Pleasure.) e. The Pattern Class has been deleted from the rulebook. Western Dressage has been put in place of the Pattern Class.
7. The Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Show schedule (PDF) is online at horse.osu.edu. Click on the horse show page and the schedule is an additional resources link. The Junior Horse Show will take place July 27th-31st with the entry deadline of July 13th for all non-dressage classes.”
Attention 4-H members, ages 14-18 as of January 1, 2015 - applications for state and nation-al trips are now available! Youth applying for these exciting opportunities will need to com-plete a “resume” and interview. The deadline for submitting resumes is January 26th at 4:00 p.m. The resume format and trip descriptions are available at the O.S.U. Extension, Miami County website, miami.osu.edu.
Interviews will be held at OSU Extension Office on January 29, 2015, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Interviews are by appointment only.
