Project Concept:

Googling ‘bath house’, the first link found is thewikipedia entry for ‘Gay bathhouse’. These spaceshave been around as part of human culture in variousiterations throughout history.

They acted as both a cleaning location and also asocial meeting point for the gay community, usuallygay and bisexual men but also straight-identifyingmen, lesbians in some situations and as a location ofperformance and entertainment in cases such as theContinental Baths where Bette Midler got her start.

My structure leans more towards this side of thespectrum. Some of the existing gay bathhouses inMichigan are nearly unidentifiable from the outside.This one would be located within site of a primary gayclub in Michigan (Necto), along pathways betweensuch gay-friendly cities as Chicago and Toronto, andembraces the feeling of voyeurism and covering felt

within gay culture.



Glass pools and openings in the floor createcontinuous lines of site throughout thebuilding, reflecting and refracting withwater and glass, but displaying bits andpieces of the actions inside. The outer wallsleave the inner structure open, cutting out

most lines out sight ouside but leavingnot privy to the activities inside with thefeeling that ‘something’ worth knowing isoccuring inside.

Sounds would reflect throughout thestructure, from the basement to the roofdue to this seperation of floor from wall.The spaces within create a collage of cutsand pieces of sights and sounds expose andcover the inhabitants at the same time.
