Department Information Last summer LTC Zach Buett-

ner (’97) became the 52nd

Professor of Military Science at

the University. The depart-

ment is currently staffed with 4

officers, 2 NCOs and 4 civilian

employees. There are current-

MS II (8 contracted), 18 MS III

and 18 MS IV cadets in the

Once again the department

participated in the Annual

Game Ball Run with the Iowa

State University Army ROTC

department. This year the

cadets ran through the towns

of Iowa City, Williamsburg,

Tama, Marengo and Belle

Plaine to collect canned food

items for the Iowa City Shelter

House.

Members of the department

also participated in the Game

Ball Ruck sponsored by the

University of Iowa Veterans

Association (UIVA). This year

the UIVA conducted a 280

mile ruck march, bringing the

game ball from the University

of Minnesota to Kinnick Stadi-

um for the home game on 14

November.

The Ranger Challenge team

took 2nd place at the TF Chal-

lenge Competition held at

Camp Dodge.

On 5 February, 2016, the de-

partment will conduct a swear-

ing in ceremony during the

intermission of the Iowa-

Indiana wrestling meet. 3 Ca-

dets will be sworn in and ad-

mission is free for military ID

card holders.

Admission to the meet is free

for military ID holders and

dependants with a military ID.

Also, the first 500 fans will

receive an Iowa ROTC/

Wrestling t-shirt.

On 5 February 2016, the de-

partment will swear in 3 Ca-

dets in a ceremony during the

intermission of the Iowa-

said that “it was truly an awe-

some experience presenting

the colors at a sold out game.”

This event was well received

by the football department and

the story was picked up by the

Army PAO.

The Michigan Wolverines will

be the Hawkeye’s opponent at

next season’s Veteran’s Day

game on 12 Nov 2016.

Prior to the annual Veteran’s

Day football game the MHBAA

provided the first alumni color

guard to present the colors.

MHBAA Partners With The UIAA

P A G E 3 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 1

During our December 2015 meet-

ing, Jeff Kueter, Director of the

University of Iowa Alumni Associa-

tion (UIAA) spoke to the MHBAA

Board of Directors about the bene-

fits of partnering with the UIAA.

The UIAA is reaching out to small-

er alumni organizations, like the

MHBAA, in order to assist the

smaller organizations in what they

want to accomplish and also in-

crease the reach of the UIAA. At

it’s January 2016 meeting the

MHBAA Board of Directors unani-

mously voted to partner with the

UIAA. Partnering with the UIAA

provides numerous benefits to the

MHBAA.

First, the MHBAA will have access

to the UIAA database of alumni.

The UIAA is continually updating

it’s database that includes all gradu-

ates of the university. We are try-

ing to reach out to all of our alumni

but we know there are a great deal

that we have not had contact with

and the UIAA will assist us.

Second, the UIAA will serve as our

bank. Any funds that we bring in

will be stored with the UIAA and

they will file the required paper-

work with the government. We will

still have control over our money

but this will alleviate a lot of re-

quirements on our Treasurer.

Third, the UIAA has people that

will be able to assist us with re-

sourcing and executing events that

we want to sponsor (i.e. 5k run,

golf tournament, etc.).

If you were promoted or retired

from either the military or your

civilian job we want to know about

it. Send a brief bio and a picture to

the MHBAA Secretary, Luke Peters

(‘89) and we will make sure it gets

in to the next newsletter.

officer was LTC (r) Deyak and he

received his first salute from MSG

2LT Anna J. Motyka was commis-

sioned in the Army Nurse Corps.

She is a nursing major from Batavia,

IL. Her commissioning officer was

her brother, LT Nicholas Motyka,

USN, and she received her first

salute from MSG (r) Stoen.

Congratulations to both Lieuten-

ants, always lead from the front.

On 18 December, 2015, the UI

Army ROTC Department commis-

sioned it’s two newest officers in

the Senate Chambers at the Old

Capitol. Former Professor of Mili-

tary Science LTC (r) Dave Deyak

was the keynote speaker.

2LT Matthew J. Ford was commis-

sioned in the Engineer Corps. He is

a Civil Engineering major from

Huntley, IL. His commissioning

charge us a fee for these services

unless the organization (or event)

becomes large enough that it is

taking a lot of their time. In the

event that the UIAA does charge us

a fee it will be nominal to cover

costs.

Mr. Kueter only asks that our mem-

bers consider joining the UIAA.

Finally the UIAA will help “spread

the word” of our organization. They

will be able to run articles and ad-

vertise events for us in their news-

letter. They will also set up and

maintain our website which will be

linked in with the main UIAA web-

site. The content will be ours and

they will maintain it.

MHBAA Board of Directors

With the 100th anniversary of the

creation of ROTC the MHBAA and

the Department want to ensure that

this event is properly recognized.

Army ROTC has impacted the lives

of everyone receiving this newsletter

and we hope that you will be able to

celebrate the proud history of ROTC

at the University of Iowa.

Some of the events that we initially

talked about for the 2016-2017 school year are:

Participation in the Annual Game Ball Run.

Tailgates at home football

games.

A 5k run.

Recognition at the Annual Veteran’s Day Football game.

This year’s game is on 12 November, 2016 against

Michigan. We hope to have a pregame recognition of Army

ROTC and the 2nd edition of the Alumni Color Guard.

Governor’s Proclamation in

conjunction with the depart-ments from ISU and UNI

recognizing the 100th year of ROTC.

Any other recommendations should be forwarded to a Board Member. DID YOU KNOW— The UI Military Department had a two gun Artillery Battery until
