International Activity

We are seeing good use of the Baker Tilly International (BTI) membership to support and advise clients. Detailed information on the BTI Referral Process can be found on the MHA Extranet. This month’s activities include: Alison Aggleton from Carpenter Box’s Tax

team is in the process of obtaining advice from BTI members. She is asking BTI Portugal about residence tax planning and BTI Sweden, Germany, France, Spain and Italy about VAT registrations.

Larking Gowen are utilising Collins Barrow Toronto LLP to assist with gross sales tax advice and the submission of a Canadian branch tax return.

Larking Gowen made a referral to Baker Tilly Reolfs in Munich regarding a client who performs work in Germany and whether this requires German VAT registration.

Larking Gowen received two referrals from Adam Grainger, but don’t have any further details as of yet.

Baker Tilly South East Europe have recently enquired about partnering with MHA MacIntyre Hudson with regards to restructuring and recovery opportunities. Georgina Eason, Mick Sanders and Paul Davis hope that this will offer a rich source of work over the coming year.

Paul Davis from MHA MacIntyre Hudson has had an enquiry from a Thai steel mill, with regards to asset recovery.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson’s Birmingham office have referred some direct taxes work through BTI to the Netherlands, Germany and France.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson's Milton Keynes team assisted RubinBrown LLP in advising one of their USA clients on undertaking a large scale class action case in the UK.

Moore & Smalley have used Baker Tilly International in Russia to help with a tender document for a local business with a Russian subsidiary.

BTI has several forthcoming activities, details of which are available on the BTI website. MHA members are able to access the BTI members only extranet where they can find more information about news, events and referrals.

Inter Firm Activity Broomfield & Alexander will be carrying out

a stocktake attendance for Monahans in the next few weeks.

Henderson Loggie sought advice from Larking Gowen as to whether for EIS purposes, investments in an Agricultural Contracting company are excluded.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson’s Milton Keynes office have been assisting Larking Gowen with a confidential sales mandate.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson recently tendered for some international restructuring and recovery opportunities in the shipping sector as well as the property and construction sector. Using the association they were able to gain valuable credentials, which have added hugely to the end product. Many thanks to those who offered their help and expertise.

coverage this month. This included coverage for

Denise Roberts giving advice to people that are

thinking of starting a business, coverage for Paul

Bowden being appointed Director at their Swansea

office, three pieces of Budget coverage and

coverage for a ‘How to sell your business’ guide.

Carpenter Box achieved a range of coverage this

month. Four pieces covered their Alternative

Funding event which attracted over 130 attendees

and they also received Budget coverage.

This month Henderson Loggie received coverage

from Partner George Hay discussing how

managing schools with a charitable status involves

having to meet challenges in an increasingly

complex environment. They also received

coverage for Managing Partner David Smith

attending and commenting on the Dundee Jobs

Summit and received Budget coverage.

Larking Gowen received three pieces of coverage

this month. Two pieces covered them being

liquidators of a fundraising call centre and one

piece announced that Partner Chris Scargill will be

speaking at the Suffolk Inside Out tourism

conference.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson received a range of

coverage this month. They appeared in BBP

magazine (page 38) advertising their services

alongside Birmingham Runner. Partner Andrew

Burnham featured in two publications speaking

about the CAA issuing new guidance on the

financial tests that ‘Small Business’ ATOL holders

(SBA’s) and smaller ATOL holders will have to

meet in future. Also, Gareth Peters, Tax Director in

their Milton Keynes office featured in AM Online's

article on how dealers stand to benefit from the

2016 Budget.

Monahans received a range of coverage this

month, including coverage for their app and

coverage for appointing Karen Cooper as their new

Rural Manager.

Moore & Smalley received four pieces of Budget

coverage this month. This included Tony Medcalf,

Head of Tax commenting on the Budget and

Rachel Marsdin, Tax Partner analysing the Budget

and its likely impact on Cumbria.

Tait Walker achieved 16 pieces of coverage this

month and last month. This included coverage for

the Advanced Manufacturing Forum (AMF) which

is in partnership with Tait Walker. Coverage for

Partner Alastair Wilson being involved with a free

workshop for clubs seeking advice on CASC

scheme. They also received coverage from the EU

referendum debate event they hosted and for

Graham Brown and Paul Cameron joining.

New Starters Broomfield & Alexander have two new starters this month. Paul Bowden joined their Director team in Swansea and Juliet Walters joined their Cardiff office as a Receptionist. MHA MacIntyre Hudson have two new starters this month. Sonia Salhan has joined their Birmingham office as a payroll administrator and Holly Brookes has joined their Milton Keynes office as a Marketing and Business Development Manager. Moore & Smalley have two new starters. Andrew Selby joined their Financial Planning team on 29 February as a Financial Planning Consultant. Andrew joins Moore &Smalley from Finch Employee Benefits where he held the position of Employee Benefits Consultant. Tom Hewitt also joined the Financial Planning team as a Financial Planning Consultant on 7 March. Tom has gained a plethora of experience in Finance, having previously worked in the banking industry, and more recently as an Independent Financial Advisor. Tait Walker have seven new starters this month. Paul Cameron has joined as an Audit Manager, Graham Brown joined as a Corporate Finance Manager, Rebecca Patterson joined their IT team, Ashley Meagan joined as a Financial Planner, Kim Hancock joined their Wealth Management team, Lauren Tennant joined their Forensic Services team and Katie Gardiner joined their Payroll team.

Promotions At Larking Gowen, Andrew Burwood has been promoted to Partner, as of the 1 April. Andrew joined their specialist medical team in October 2015 as a Senior Manager, having spent the previous 23 years with a top 50 firm of Chartered Accountants in East Anglia.

Giving something back This month Carpenter Box organised a dress down day and held a cake sale to raise money for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Also, Chris Reed from their Wealth Management team is running the London Marathon and is doing car washing and having his legs waxed as extra ways to raise money! The staff at MHA MacIntyre Hudson’s Northampton office teamed up with law firm, Howes Percival to donate Easter eggs to a local charity who collect Easter eggs for children who are in the care system. Combined they managed to collect 235 eggs.

Moore & Smalley co-organised and sponsored the Butterfly Ball which took place in Lancashire on 19 March 2016. This raised £43,000 for The Prince’s Trust. Tait Walker held dress down days and Easter egg raffles in February and March. As a result, they have raised £500 for the Bobby Robson Foundation and £100 for Daft as a Brush.

Successful Events Larking Gowen held a Budget event on 17 March 2016. (Pictured below from left to right) David Sheepshanks (CBE DL, Chairman UK Community Foundations), Luke Morris (partner), Richard Proctor (partner) and Michael Morter (Manager Tax Advisory Group) all presented.

MHA MacIntyre Hudson Partner Emma Clewes held her fifth FD Forum breakfast meeting at Weightmans on 22 March 2016. Steve Fletcher of Arthur J Gallagher, Tom Clark from Crossword Cyber Security and Mark Surguy from Weightmans all spoke about Cyber Risks and how to protect your company and insure against the risks of a cyber attack. They had 19 attendees in total and they hope to grow this number for their next meeting. MHA MacIntyre Hudson held a Buy to Let Investors seminar at their London City office on 17 March 2016. There was a good turnout for the event with a lot of positive feedback from the attendees. £50,000+ fees have been won so far from this campaign and they have other follow up meetings arranged, with the potential for more work/fees to be won. Tait Walker have had continued success with their Buy to Let seminars. Their fourth run of the seminar is taking place on 13 April 2016. They have over 300 attendees so far. They also held three Budget seminars which altogether attracted 200 attendees.
