Located on the South West of Vietnam, Phu Quoc Island is the biggest island of Vietnam.

Settlements have been recorded on the island for hundreds of years, but the conflicts in Indochina have occasionally boosted the population with large numbers of soldiers and, for a short time, up to 40,000 prisoners of war in Vietnams largest wartime prison. Now, after more than 30 years of peace and stability, Phu Quoc has returned to farming and fishing while welcoming limited numbers of tourists seeking to take advantage of the glorious tropical climate, the untouched beaches and the natural environment

Geography

With 528 square km, wider to the north and narrowing down to the South, Phu Quoc island is a heart shaped slice of paradise with a high central ridge of protected dense rainforest and a fringe of palm lined white sandy beaches

How to reach the island

The Island can be reached by flights and boats. With 12 daily flight from HCM (50 minutes), Ha Noi and Can Tho international airport or ferries from Mekong Delta with 2-3 trips daily (2 hours).

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE ISLAND

The beach: If youve dreamed of finding secluded tropical beaches where theres barely another human being in sight, youve come to the right place. Phu Quoc has mile after mile of beautiful sandy beach to explore, and of course one of the finest stretches is right at La Veranda.

The national park: Take a drive through the north of the island and youll pass through the primary rainforest of Phu Quocs national park. Listen for the whoops of the rare langurs or macaques in the forest or try to spot one of the rare birds of paradise that make their home in the jungle

The ports and markets: Early morning and early evening are the busiest times in the port of Dong Duong as the fleet comes in with the catch. The markets are alive with color and banter as the fruits of the fishermens labor are traded.

The fish sauce factory: A fragrant and fascinating exploration of Phu Quocs main industry.

Pepper Farm: Dotted around the island, see how the farmers grow pepper and taste some right on the farm.
