POLISH PARA PLATOONHistorical Note: During the evening of September 22/23rd, a platoon sized force lead by Lt. Albert Smaczny from the 8th Company was successfully ferried across the Lower Rhine. During the evening of September 24th about 100 Polish Paras from the 3rd Battalion and the Anti-Tank Company were successfully ferried across the river.

BIG BATTERIESAlthough an Airlanding Battery, Royal Artillery is a single Support choice, each Gun Troop operates as a separate platoon with its own Command Team. The HQ Troop Command team and Staff team are Independent teams. If the HQ Troop Command team joins a Gun troop, it becomes the Platoon Command Team.

Although they count as separate platoons for all other purposes, an Airlanding Battery deploys as a single platoon, all at the same time. For example, both Gun Troops are treated as a single platoon when calculating the number of platoons held in Ambush or Reserve.

An Airlanding Battery uses the British Artillery Special rules Eight-Gun Batteries, Rounds on the Ground, and Mike Target.

A Field or Medium Battery, Royal Artillery fielded by the British Airborne must be deployed using the “Across the Rhine” rule. Polish Airborne forces may choose whether or not to use the “Across the Rhine” rule.British and Polish Airborne forces may field a Medium Battery, Royal Artillery without any Field Batteries in their force.Deployed Observer Teams are 1st Airborne Units (Fearless Veteran Observer Rifle Teams) and cannot be deployed with OP Carriers or upgraded to OP Shermans.Polish Airborne forces using Royal Artillery assets may use the British Artillery Special Rules for Royal Artillery platoons.

ACROSS THE RHINEPlayers may use a version of the Across the Volga special rule in games played at MG65.

Across the Volga (see page 225 of the Flames of War rulebook) is used as written with the following modification: The artillery teams in a platoon being deployed Across the Rhine must have a bombardment range GREATER than 48”.

Additional notes about the Across the Rhine rule:

Notes in previous Special Intelligence Briefings that reference a force 1. being able to use Across the Volga should be ignored. This ability applies to all forces at MG65.Field or Medium Batteries in British Parachute and Airlanding forces 2. MUST use Across the Rhine.Remember that a platoon must be DEPLOYED to fire from Across 3. the Rhine. Platoons in reserver are NOT yet deployed and cannot yet fire from a position Across the Rhine. A platoon may deploy into Across the Rhine from reserve.Remember that observer teams are independent teams and are 4. deployed when and how independent teams are deployed.You do not have to physically have the troops to be deployed Across 5. the Rhine, but if you do not have them they cannot be deployed in any way except Across the Rhine.

Design Note: For Market-Garden, the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron was divided between the Arnhem Bridge coup-de-main force (HQ, ‘C’ and ‘D’ Troops, with a half troop of engineers from the 9th Field Company) and the rest of the squadron which was retained as a divisional reserve and ultimately used to defend a section of the Oosterbeek perimeter. This list allows airborne players an alternate force for reconnaissance missions or to field the entire squadron as an interesiting “what if ” option.

AIRLANDING RECCE PLATOONBefore deploying your force at the start of the game, you may take the Scout Section teams in your combat platoons and form an Airlanding Recce Platoon (ARP). If you form an ARP, all the Scout Section teams in your force must join the platoon. The 2iC becomes the Platoon Command team for the ARP, ceasing to be an Independent team and no longer counting as a 2iC Command Team. Teams placed in the ARP are no longer part of their original platoons. The ARP counts as a platoon for all purposes including deployment and Company Morale Checks. The ARP is a Reconnaissance Platoon.”

Historical Notes: The gliders carrying the AT gun batteries of the 1st Polish Independent Parachute Brigade landed on the British landing zones north of the Rhine since the Polish drop zones south of the Rhine where judged too hazardous for glider landings. Each AT gun was accompanied by two Polish crewmen. The British glider pilots served as gun crewmen after landing. Only 7 of the battery’s 16 guns successfully landed and were used to defend the approaches to the British 1st Airborne Division HQ in the Hotel Hartenstein.

BIG BATTERIESAlthough a Polish Airlanding Battery is a single Support choice, each Gun Troop operates as a separate platoon with its own Command Team. The HQ Troop Command team and Staff team are Independent teams. If the HQ Troop Command team joins a Gun troop, it becomes the Platoon Command Team.

Although they count as separate platoons for all other purposes, an Airlanding Battery deploys as a single platoon, all at the same time. For example, both Gun Troops are treated as a single platoon when calculating the number of platoons held in Ambush or Reserve.

A Polish Airlanding Battery uses the British Artillery Special Rules Eight-Gun Batteries, Rounds on the Ground, and Mike Target.
