About the Institutiion:Founded in 1952, Mar Thoma College,
Thiruvalla is one of the institutions of higher learning administrated by the Mar Thoma Church. All through the last six decades of its existence the college has made an indelible mark as a committed Christian institution of exemplary standard in the field of higher education in the state. Within the ambiance of academic sovereignty, the college strives to impart high quality education and training to human resources appropriate to the changing national and global requirements. As a minority institution, it stands devoted in bringing the benefits of higher education within the reach of less fortunate segments in the society.
Affiliation and accreditations:The College is affiliated to Mahatma
Gandhi University, Kottayam under the 2(f) & 12(b) category of the UGC. The College, was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 1998, the first college to do so in Kerala. It also attained the unique distinction of being the first re-accredited college with A-Grade in Mahatma Gandhi University during 2005 and 2012. The college has 15 teaching departments spread over five faculties. The college presently offers 12 under graduate and 11 post graduate programmes and several non-formal courses. The College also offers Ph.Dprogrammes in seven research departments recognized by the Mahtma Gandhi University, Kottayam.
Post Graduate Department of Biosciences
Established in 2005, the Department of Biosciences offers M.Sc. Microbiology and M.Sc. Biotechnology courses affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. The curriculum aims to provide the students with advanced level theoretical knowledge, practical experiences and training in life sciences with particular focus on modern molecular and systems biology approaches.Apart from theoretical education, the department is committed to equip its students with research and analytical skills, making them resourceful and self sustainable. It has well equipped laboratories, with state of the art precision defined instruments, which are made available to the students to foster their plans for research. Strong expertise exists among the faculty on both theoretical and experimental methods of research in life sciences. The students are also given the opportunity to acquire relevant experience through industrial or clinical attachments and through industry-based projects. As a testimony to its academic excellence, the department has recorded consistently good results in University Examinations and students have secured quality placements in Industry and academia.
Eligibility:A basic degree in Biological Sciences viz,
Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Biological Techniques & Specimen Preparation, Microbiology, Chemistry, MLT or any other equivalent degree recognized by MG University, with not less than CGPA of 2.00 (50%) in the Core Group (Core + Open + Complementary).
