The object of the present paper is to make known theadditions to the coleopterous fauna of Mexico, as far asregards the family Cicindelida, which have been receivedby Messrs. Godman and Salvin since the completion ofColeoptera, vol. i., part 1, of the 'Biologia Centrali-

Americana,' and to describe such sj^ecies and wellmarked varieties as appear to be new to Science, cor-

In the * Biologia' thetotal number of Cicindelidce recorded was 61 belongingto 5 genera. In the present paper the total is increasedto 78, the additions, 17 species, belonging all to therestricted genus Cicindela.

Excepting the conspicuous and separated maculationof the elytra this form shows no difference from the type-form, and from numerous varieties of C. ohsoleta found inColorado, New Mexico, and Texas, none of which exhibita similar number and form of spots. The second andthird spots are always distant from the margin, and the

middle, subtruncate, with a central tooth, and the angles

of the truncature wcll-markecL The eyes are somewhat

strongly j)i'ominent, and the sides of the vertex aresharply striated, the central part, as well as the occiputand neck, being nearly smooth or very finely alutaceons, like the convex disk of the thorax on each side. The elytraare rather strongly punctulated throughout, towards thebase granulate-punctate, and the large bluish roundedshallow umbilicated foveoles are scattered from the basenearly to the ai3ex; the apices are separately rounded, the edges not serrulated, the sutural apex spinose. The

sides of the body are thinly and loosely pubescent, thetrochanters blackish, the legs purple-coppery, cyancoustowards the base of the femora.

s sj^ecies comes nearer King's description of hisC. semicircitlaris than any other Mexican form that Iave seen. It agrees in form, which Klug says is that

of C Jiexuosay but it differs in the colour of the head,

in the labrum being distinctly unidentate in the ? , inthe impunctate thorax, and in the absence of a secondsubmarginal spot on the elytra ; and it may therefore bea nearly allied and distinct species. At any rate, thespecies referred to O. semicircular is in the * BiulogiaC.-A.,' on the authority of French collections, cannot be

of King, who describes the labrum as scarcely

armed and the thorax as finely punctured, the wrongly-

named insect having the labrum greatly produced, almostnarrowly sublobate in the middle in both sexes andstrongly tridentate, aiid the thorax rather coarsely anddensely sculptured. It will require, therefore, a new

Though similar in form to C. hcmichryscay this speciescan scarcely belong to the same group, as the labrum is

totally different, being scarcely convex, broadly pro-duced in the middle, with the anterior margin of theproduced part more or less truncated and unidentate, and a conspicuous submarginal row of large setiferous

punctures 10 or 12 in number. The head is muchthicker and broader behind the ejxs, which latter aremuch less prominent ; the vertex is only slightly de-pressed and finely striated, the declivous forehead con-fusedly rugulose. The thorax is relatively long, graduallynarrowed behind, with the transverse sulci only faintlyimpressed, the dorsal sulcus more strongly so, thougliabbreviated at both ends, and deeply incised at its basaltermination; the disk on each side finely and closely

strigulose. The elytra are relatively short, slightly andgradually dilated from the base to near tbe aj)ex, theshoulders rectangular. The discoidal white fascia liesconsiderably behind the middle, and in the centre ofeach elytron is curved or feebly biflexuose, only slightly

oblique and thickened at its inner end ; a siibmarginal

j)raeapical spot is the only other T\hite marking. Theelytra in both sexes are conjointly rounded at the apex, with small sutural tooth, the margin not serrulated.Beneath greenish aeneous, the episterna coppery aeneous

and more brilliant. The femora and tibiae cupreous, the tarsi violaceous. The palpi whitish, with the termi-

This cmious little species is evidently closely allied toC. lyrcEciiii^ though having much in common with (7.Hoegi (Bates). The head and thorax are of nearly thesame form, at least in the ? , the ^ differing strangelyin the head being narrower and less convex ' behind theeyes, and the thorax less rectilinear on the sides. Thebasal part of the elytra appears flattened, owing to the

epiplem'ae being vertical in conjunction with the mirror-

like marginal stripe, and forming a rectangular edgewith the disk, which edge is curiously sinuated at thepoint, where a brilliantly polished narrow subflexuousoblique vitta is emitted to the disk. The eyes are moreprominent than in C. j)rcecisa, and the concave vertexmore completely covered with sharp partly concentricstrino. The thorax is finely striated in different direc-

, and the sulci are still more faintly impressed than

in C. lyrcEcisa. The elytra are finely alutaceous, besetwith bluish green punctures, the interstices of which are

minutely marbled with cupreous ; the apical margin isnot serrulated, and is oblique and straight for a shortdistance near the sutural angle, which latter iS' spinose.Beneath blackish blue, glabrous on the sides ; femoraaurescent. The labrum is broadly produced, subtrun-cate, unispinose in the middle, as in C. prcecisa^ but thecentre is strongly longitudinall}^ convex, and the sub-

marginal setiferous punctures are less numerous and

    spicuous.

species has, since the above-cited description was

    published, been received in numbers from various locali-ties, particularly in the Province Guerrero. The firstexamples received were all of a coj^pery aeneous hue ; mostof those lately arrived are greenish brassy brown, opaque,with rather brighter aeneous or coppery head, thorax,and elytral suture, the green umbilicated foveoles of thelatter conspicuous against the dark colour. The whitemarkings also are more developed than is described inthe type-form, in which they consist of a short obliquestreak on the disk, with a small posterior discoidal spot ;

Among the great number of examples of the differentvarieties from very numerous localities referred in the

    * Biologia ' to this species on the authority of Chaudoir,I have failed to find a single specimen agreeing withDejean's description in the essential peculiarity of theelytral markings, viz.^ a crescent-shaped apical lunuleand three detached spots in triangle on the disk. Thedetached spots of course represent the marginal and dis-coidal ends of the median fascia and the posterior mar-ginal spot, but in Mexican examples it invariably occursthat when the median fascia is dissolved into spots theapical lunule is also disintegrated* The apical lunuleremains entire \yhen the median markings degenerateonly in closely-allied N. American species, e. g., C. cuvia-tills. Dejean's example was from Palisot de Beauvois's

collection, and labelled ** St. Domingo"; whether this iscorrect, or the specimen came from the south-easternStates, is doubtful, and the Mexican forms perhaps donot belong to the same species.

This distinct species, so similar in form and elytralmarkings to (7. repanda (Dej/, but distinguished by thered apical half of the abdomen, the smoother, darker, more opaque, o.nd behind dilated elytra and the glabrousforehead, has been taken in great number by Herr Hogeat Villa Lerdo in Durango. He met with it also in moresoutherly localities, ri^., San Juan Bautista in Tabasco, and Tehuantepec.

transversely and irregularly rugulose. The elytra, cop-

angle. The sides of the body beneath are moderately

densely clothed with adpressed hairs. The legs are
