When we talk about our country, state

and city we do have a lot of assets to be

boasted upon. Kerala, famous for becoming

the first and only state in India with 100% lit-

eracy and yet with other accomplishments,

is a role model to many others. And our city,

the capital “Thiruvananthapuram” is house

to the richest shrine in the world. With

Kovalam – one of the oldest tourist para-

dises, now the city’s tourism map is getting

expanded with new destinations and lakhs

of foreigners as well as local tourists flow

into our city every year.

“She-toilets” Pilot Project by KSWDC to bring 35 e-toilets exclusively for LadiesAtlast, some good news for the women folk! The “She-toilet” pilot project by Kerala State Women Development Corporation is going to bring thousands of la-dies in the city in relief. To have exclusive women toilets in 35 major city centers, first of its kind in any state, will be another achievement for Kerala. Team Metro Mart takes this opportunity to congratulate KSWDC Team for this necessity ven-ture, which is going to be implemented across the state.

Leave the tourists, when we, the proud

residents of this city, urge to fulfill the

nature’s call where we look around? No

problem, as usual behind some trees, or

near the roads, or at a wall in the byline?

I remember my trip to Paris before a

couple of years, when my friend wanted

to urinate near the Eiffel Tower adjacent

to the public road. It was getting dark

and despite my request for several

times, with so much tension of getting

noticed by authorities, he had done it!

A level of accomplishment I was able to

see in his eyes!

I am talking about the lack of public con-

venience centers in our city. The inad-

equacy of public toilets never bothered

our male dominated society; we never

felt it was a requirement. Can we imag-

ine the situation of our mother, wife,

sister or daughter in such an emergency

situation? I know friends, who doesn’t

drink water even in summer, afraid of

“We are already getting national attention about this

project which will have a pioneering implementation at

Thiruvananthapuram. We are receiving calls from other

state authorities to know more about this project, and

national media is covering this initiative. All cities in the

state will have “She-toilets” soon, a priority project of

KSWDC.”

getting there bladder filled before they

reach destination.

It’s high time for our city to have Public

Toilets – like the one in Delhi, Sulabh

Sauchalayas within a radius of 1kilo-

metre. Thanks to Kerala Women’s Devel-

opment Corporation, we don’t have

to wait for more political debates on

having public toilets in the City. Kerala

is all set to initiate the state-of-the-art

electronic toilets, exclusively for women

in its capital city.

This much-awaited project has finally

got the approval of the State Govern-

ment and is coming up in 35 locations

across Thiruvananthapuram. A first-of-

its-kind pilot project in India, this initia-

tive is coming up with the installation

of customized electronic facilities. Their

operation can be controlled from a re-

mote location using GPRS technology.

Automatic SMS alerts will be sent to the

control room in the case of emergencies

such as exhaustion of water tank or fill-

ing-up of septic tank. Security features

to ensure the safety of users will be

yet another highlight of these portable

toilets.

Apart from self-washing and steriliza-

tion functions, the She-toilets will

also have features like coin-operated

mechanical sanitary-napkin vending

machines that dispense napkins if coins

of Rs.5 are inserted.

An incinerator will also get featured to

destroy used ones. A baby station for

diaper changing will be implemented for

the mothers.

The She-toilets will also have other e-toi-

let facilities such as automatic payment

collection, automatic door opening,

‘busy’ and `free’ display boards, and an

automatic platform cleaning system.

However, the locations near city cent-

ers and renowned tourist spots have

achieved extra preference to set up

these She toilets.

Lastly we can say, to get the e-benefit in

toilet facilities “Ladies first, please”!

The ministry for rural development will

install 100,000 bio-toilets in about 300

villages in the country within the next two

years.

All trains could soon have bio-toilets, with

the Ministry of Rural Development, the

project will cost about Rs.500 crore and

offered to share the cost on a 50:50 basis

with the railways.

Ministry would pay 50 per cent of the cost

of retrofitting all 50,000 existing train

coaches with green toilets, provided that

the Railways pay the rest of the bill. All new

rail coaches would also have bio-toilets

made by the Defence Research and Devel-

opment Organisation.

The joy of hypermarketing was intro-

duced to India by Spencer’s in 2001.

They started as a grocery chain in India

way back in 1920, upgraded to super

market chain in 1980. From the begin-

ning, Spencer’s has been a consumer-

centric brand, constantly innovating,

pioneering formats, evolving over time

but always keeping consumer needs

and satisfaction at prime focus.

Since 1863, Spencer’s is a well-known

name in Indian retail landscape. At

one time, it has a wide expansion from

Peshawar to Cochin, from Karachi to

Chittagong, spanning almost across

India. Originally owned by a British gen-

tleman, it acquired Indian ownership in

the 1960s, and became part of the RPG

Group in 1989.

In 1995, RPG Enterprises, the flagship

company of the RPG Group, launched

Foodworld as a joint venture with Hong-

Kong based Dairy Farm International.

The joint venture, which operated

supermarkets under the name “Food-

world” and hypermarkets under the

name “Giant”, however, got closed in

2006.

48 out of the 93 stores were retained

by RPG and these were re-furbished

and launched under the brand name,

Spencer’s. This initiative kicked off a

new phase in both the history of the

Spencer’s brand, and the retail in India.

The quality, the display of wide range of

products in affordable prices and above

all, the pleasant ambience are the servic-

es for which Spencer’s is retaining trust

to its customers for almost 150 years.

Spencer’s Outlets are located at Spen-

cer Junction - MG Road, Sreekaryam and

Vellayambalam.

More is another brand in retail chain

managed byAditya Birla Retail Limited,

the retail arm of Aditya Birla Group, $40

billion Corporation. More supermarkets

cater to the daily, weekly and monthly

shopping needs of consumers. The

product offerings include a wide range

of fresh fruits & vegetables, groceries,

personal care, home care, general mer-

chandise & a basic range of apparels.

Currently, there are over 478 more

supermarkets across the country. More

has its presence under two chains- su-

permarkets and hypermarkets.

Clubmore the loyalty program, currently

has a strong membership base of over 1

million across the country. Their outlets

in the city are at Ambalamukku, DPI

Junction, General Hospital Junction,

Marappalam and Paruthipara.

In South India, Nilgiri is the leading chain

of retail stores providing customers a

wide range of shopping experience that

hinges around freshness of products,

superior quality and better value. Estab-

lished in 1905 in the hills around Ooty

and Coonoor, Nilgiri was firstly a Dairy

Farm specializing in butter. With this

humble beginning, at the turn of the

twentieth century, Nilgiri has grown to

a supermarket chain of over 90 stores

spread across India’s southern states.

The products in the supermarket are

sold under the brand name ‘Nilgiri 1905’.

Beginning with a single store on Brigade

Road in Bangalore with butter as its

mainstay, Nilgiris has scripted a story

of success with multiple stores across

cities each delivering unmatched value

in terms of range and shopping experi-

ence to the consumer, offering a wide

range of grocery, general merchandise

and personal care products. It has

become a household name in the south

with consumers spanning successive

generations.

With the mission of constantly improv-

ing and upgrading capacities to satisfy

consumers through a wide range of

food products and service offered at

the right quality, quantity and price sup-

ported by innovative solutions, Nilgiris

is all set to embrace emerging technolo-

gies and be recognized for its integrity,

customer focus and commitment to

quality.

Nilgiris outlets are at LMS Junction,

Kumarapuram Road and Thycaud.

Reliance Fresh has also entered in the

city with an outlet at Pattom. Reliance

Fresh has fresh fruits and vegetables,

grocery and provisions, personal care

items and cosmetics and other daily

needed products.

More and more mega stores are expect-

ed to bring more innovative shopping

experience to Trivandrumites. We wish

all a very Happy Shopping!

wood, timber, wood structures or engi-

neered wood. These generally increase

the durability and resistance from being

destroyed by insects or fungus.

Three primary methods of wood treat-

ment currently prevail: creosote pres-

sure-treated wood, pentachlorophenol

pressure-treated wood, and inorganic

arsenical pressure-treated wood. The

pressure-treating process is done by

commercial facilities and made available

to users in the final wood product. Cop-

per napthenate, zinc napthenate, and

tributyltin oxide are other wood treat-

ment options that can be site applied.

Pressure processes are the most perma-

nent method around today in preserv-

ing timber life. Pressure processes are

those in which the treatment is carried

out in closed cylinders with applied pres-

sure and/or vacuum. These processes

have a number of advantages over the

non-pressure methods. In most cases, a

deeper and more uniform penetration

and a higher absorption of preservative

is achieved. Another advantage is that

the treating conditions can be control-

led so that retention and penetration

can be varied. These pressure processes

can be adapted to large-scale produc-

tion. The high initial costs for equipment

and the energy costs are the biggest dis-

advantages. These treatment methods

are used to protect ties, poles and struc-

tural timbers and find use throughout

the world today. The various pressure

processes that are used today differ in

details, but the general method is in all

cases the same. The treatment is carried

out in cylinders. The timbers are loaded

onto special tram cars, so called buggies

or bogies, and into the cylinder. These

cylinders are then set under pressure

TH I RUVANANTHAPURAM mart August 2012 21

Page 22: METRO_MART _AUGUST

often with the addition of higher tem-

perature. As final treatment, a vacuum

is frequently used to extract excess pre-

servatives. These cycles can be repeated

to achieve better penetration.

There is ongoing research as to whether

heat treatments can be used to make

timber more durable. By heating timber

to a certain temperature, it may be pos-

sible to make the wood-fibre less appe-

tising to insects. Although unlikely to be

as effective as chemical preservatives,

anecdotal evidence suggests some

consumers would prefer chemical-free

timber preservation methods.

Heat treatment can also improve the

properties of the wood with respect to

water: lower equilibrium moisture, less

moisture deformation, and weather re-

sistance. It is weather-resistant enough

to be used, unprotected, in facades

or in kitchen tables, where wetting is

expected.

There are 3 similar European heat treat-

ments: Retiwood, developed in France,

Thermowood, developed in Finland by

VTT, and Platowood developed in The

Netherlands. These processes auto-

clave the treated wood, subjecting it to

pressure and heat, along with nitrogen

or water vapour to control drying in a

staged treatment process ranging from

24 to 48 hours at temperatures of 180

to 230 °C depending on timber species.

These processes increase the durability,

dimensional stability and hardness of

the treated wood by at least one class;

however, the treated wood is dark-

ened in colour, and there are changes

in certain mechanical characteristics:

specifically, the modulus of elasticity

is increased to 10% and the modulus

of rupture is diminished by 5% to 20%;

thus, the treated wood requires drilling

for nailing to avoid splitting the wood.

Certain of these processes cause less of

an impact than others in their the me-

chanical effects upon the treated wood.

Wood treated with this process is often

used for cladding or siding, flooring,

furniture and windows.

MSK Wood Industries has been

providing services in wood market by

manufacturing exceptional class of

Stair case, Carving, Molding, timber and

other products in wood decoration and

projects in wood decoration.

Restaurateurs are the hosts and we are

the guests, it’s their duty to welcome

the guest in a well-set way. Most

restaurants are clean we enter it, but

conditions in the kitchen are most unhy-

Shabby, untidy premises and unhygienic

cooking practices are the common

scene in most of the hotels. It’s high

time that the situation should change.

The ‘shawarma affair’ was a blow to

the people who are dependent upon

restaurants and eateries. Still Kerala

has not relieved from the jolt it created.

Trivandrum being the state capital has

large number of floating population and

are mainly reliant on restaurants in the

city. So, the hygiene and quality of food

served at restaurants is important for

our safety and health. The government

should step up and help wiping out this

problem which affects the general pub-

lic. Trivandrum Corporation launched

raids on restaurants and eateries in the

city. It also issued orders to close down

the restaurants found to be function-

ing in unhygienic conditions. Will this

resolve the problem of food safety?

Hoteliers should see to it that the things

that are used for preparing are not stale.

Ample precautions should be taken for

storing food and till it reaches the dining

tables. The preparation of food under

hygienic conditions is equally important

as the quality of the materials used for

cooking.

Kerala being a significant hub of tour-

When will the school bus reach the bus

stop? Has the bus already left? Where has

the bus reached? Often these questions go

through parents mind when you prepare

your child for the school. A simple solution

for all these is ‘Smart Vehicles’. Good news

is that these smart vehicles are soon to hit

the Trivandrum city.

With a new fleet management system

called iTAC (acronym for Intelligent

Tracking and Communication) entwined

to busses, parents can track down the

transport of their children to and from the

schools. Innovation Squared Technologies

Pvt. Ltd. (known as ii2), an IT solutions

provider based in Karamana brings out this

service to assure secure transportation in

vehicles operated by the schools in the city.

Through SMS alerts one can get periodic

updates of the school bus from its location

to the route station. The Vehicle track-

ing system keeps a real-time track of the

vehicle in the fleet, so that you can know

the speed at which your child’s bus is

moving. It also tracks over-speeding, rash

driving and harsh braking. The system uses

satellite, Internet and cellular network and

an array of smart sensors to give up to date

data to school authorities and parents.
