AUV Section: Laboratory Services
The AUV Section forms part of the Physical division at NMISA. It consists of the Acous-tics (sound pressure in air), Ultrasound and Vibration Laboratories.
It is responsible for the maintenance of the national measurement standards (NMS) for Air Acoustics Underwater Acoustics, Ultra-sound, Vibration and Shock. It is also re-sponsible for the dissemination of traceabil-ity to the South African industry, SADC re-gion and other African countries for these measurement parameters.
This section uses state of the art instrumen-tation and measurement techniques to de-liver the best international recognised cali-bration services in Southern Africa. The team members are actively involved in na-tional, regional and international platforms (e.g. CCAUV, AFRIMETS, SABS, SANAS, ISO and IEC).
The following Measurement and Calibration Services are offered by the laboratories in AUV.
Vibration Laboratory
• Vibration-transducers (accelerometers, velocity- and dis-placement Transducers)
• Shock sensitivity calibration of vibra-tion transducers
• Laser vibrometers
• Vibration measuring instruments
• Seismic monitoring equipment
• Charge amplifiers
• Force transducers
• Impact hammers

AUV Section: Projects
The following are new developments in the AUV Section:
• Artificial ear and artificial mastoid calibra-tion services in accordance with IEC 60318 are currently in development within the Acoustics Laboratory. Standard cali-bration services will be offered for artificial ears and artificial mastoids once SANAS accreditation has been obtained. This will underpin and establish traceability within South Africa for artificial ears and artificial mastoids, that are used for the calibration of audiometers, within the audiometry and hearing conservation communities (e.g. the testing of hearing and hearing aids)
• The Ultrasound Laboratory is busy with the implementation of a hydrophone cali-bration system (mainly aimed at the naval industry) as well as an ultrasound power calibration system (aimed at medical and manufacturing industries).
• In the Vibration Laboratory, the mobile calibration system has been evaluated and can now be used to perform onsite calibration of vibration transducers. This will reduce the downtime for clients that have to courier equipment to NMISA for calibration.
• A primary shock calibration system is un-der development in the Vibration laborato-ry.

NMISA 70/10 Celebrations
The National Metrology Institution of South Africa (NMISA) is celebrating 10 years as an independent entity and 70 years as the offi-cial Metrology Institute in SA. A number of events have been planned from the 31st of July to the 4th of August 2017 to celebrate these significant milestones. NMISA’s Board of Directors together with the Executive Team led by CEO: Ndwakhulu Mukhufhi cor-dially invite you to share in the commemora-tion that will take place at conference ven-ues in Pretoria.
In 2007, after the promulgation of the new Measurement Units and Measurement Standards Act (Act No. 18 of 2006), NMISA
was established as a Technical (Quality) Infrastructure reporting to the Department of Trade and In-dustry (dti). Consequently, 1947 is the year Metrology was formally established in South Africa and 2007 NMISA was established as an independent institution.
The local Test & Measurement conference is also planned to link to the celebrations and the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS) annual General Assembly and related Technical Committee meetings will be hosted at the same time, thus ensuring that the “think-tanks” of Metrology in Africa will be in attendance. This also provides an opportunity to commemorate the Africa Year of Quality.
Representatives of the national, regional and international institutions in the Science and Metrology fraternity, high-ranking government representatives and prominent industry experts will be attending. Nobel Laureates and prominent metrologists will add a high-level scientific flavour to the occasion.
