Hitting the ball longeriger Woods, one of the best golfers in the world, only weighs 180 pounds

but he hits the ball 20 yards longer off the tee than the average tour player. If you’re like most golfers, including those who have been playing for quite some time, you’d like to add yards to your tee shot too. How does Tiger do it? Watch him and you’ll see the same small, dark grass area nest to his hips when he is at the top of his swing and at impact. Many amateur golfers make the mistake of pushing their hips toward the ball when they make their downswing. Tiger rotates his hip in making his downswing but he doesn’t make the mistake of moving them toward the ball. There’s something else Tiger does that you might want to follow. When he begins his downswing, he starts rotating his left forearm. With that action he begins to square the face and gradually release the club head. His swing is already halfway down when the uncocking of his wrists begins.

Pilates & Yoga a Combination With Proven Results

oseph Pilates used many exercise genres when he developed his original exercises method; exercises which were meant to help patients recover while he was stationed in a medical unit during World War 1. He was a veteran to anything exercise related and studied martial arts, yoga

and zen meditation. He was a boxer, a diver, and a gymnast. When he came to the United States, from his New York Studio, his Pilates method of exercises was quickly adopted by dancers to improve posture.

Pilates is a practice of core strengthening exercises. A good Pilates program will provide exercises that touch every muscle group in the body; building strength, flexibility and improving posture. The idea is a quality over quantity theme where when practicing correct alignment you can focus on different body parts and still gain benefits throughout the body. Utilizing specific engaged muscles affords an efficient exercise even while performing fewer repetitions. Pilates exercises promote strength without muscle bulk. The connection of the breath to the movement and the focus on alignment of the spine improve the mind-body connection.

In short, Pilates is intended to provide a strong, toned and healthy body.

Yoga was developed over 5000 years ago and used by every generation since. The ancient art of mind-body connected poses strengthen and lengthen our bodies. The practice of Yoga may have changed throughout the centuries, but we can adapt the basic teachings even in our lives now.

Yoga is a practice of postures intended to bring ultimate health and fitness to your body and mind. It is a practice that uses the breath to bring the mind’s focus into the body and enhance the practice’s benefits of strength, flexibility and mental clarity and calmness. Moving through your yoga practice you will practice standing, sitting, kneeling, prone and reclined poses. Inversions, twists, side stretches, balancing poses and muscle lengthening bring balance into your body.

The yogic result? A lighter feeling throughout the body and mind. Stress relief at its best. The Combination...

If we combine the two practices, we can add the postural benefits and core strength of Pilates into our yoga practice and add the flexibility and mental awareness of yoga into our Pilates practice.

Yoga postures will improve. You will be able to stand taller, contract your core more efficiently and add strength to every pose. Your Pilates practice will improve with the added flexibility, balance and awareness that yoga brings.

Many Pilates exercises are derived from yoga postures. You will clearly see the similarities. Sometimes when I teach a mixed class of yoga and Pilates I will practice the Pilates exercise and then hold in the yoga pose that it was derived from for added flexibility.

Many Pilates exercises promote flexibility in their own right, but they provide added core strength as you are usually contracting your abdominal and stabilizer muscles while you move. By using core strength while holding correct alignment, you often work your whole body simply to move correctly in the exercise.

On the other hand, the core strength that Pilates provides assists in all of the balancing postures of Yoga. I am forever telling people to stay strong through their core when moving through certain poses, when practicing strength training, when doing mostly anything.

Building your core strength - and that means your powerhouse section: that band across your lower abs, lower back, and hips - greatly reduces the risk of hurting your lower back. Lower back injury is probably the most common injury that afflicts people of all sizes and shapes.

Another cause of concern is poor posture. Your body is outof balance if you have poor posture and most people areout of balance from work related repetitive movements. Both Yoga and Pilates improve posture and bringbalance into the body; realigning the spine.

You can practice each form of exerciseseparately or find a combination classnear you. There are workout videosfor both and for combinations as well.Try it at home, or try it at a local studio.

Please be safe and check with yourdoctor before beginning any newexercise program.

keep The Yellow Golf shirt In The bag

nother beautiful day, out on the golf course, and I’m feeling like a million bucks wearing my bright yellow golf shirt, and the girl I want to meet, is just a golf hole ahead of me. A

There she goes, off the tee box. Right down the middle of the fairway on number 2 hole. The last time I was out here, she faded it right into the bunker, just next to my favorite ball placement. I missed my golden opportunity to meet her at that time. I pull hooked the ball on the opposite side of the fairway.

Maybe we’ll meet a couple holes down. She has to come back down number 3, and I should be teeing off number 2-tee box at the same time. Maybe I’ll impress her with a beautiful drive, straight and long down the fairway. Worst-case scenario will be another long hook out into her fairway this time. I wonder if she’ll stop and watch me fly the trees, hitting back to the green?

Here we go. I see that her drive on number 3 landed left side of the fairway. I better tee this puppy up and let it fly. If I’m going to impress her, now is the time. With this bright yellow golf shirt on, there is no way that she will not notice me. I’m sure I’ll stand out. This is my golden opportunity.

Great golf shot happening here! It is flying way out of sight! I see her looking over as the ball lands and rolls. Wow! I think I did it! All I have to do is proudly walk down the middle of the fairway. I feel like a pro with this yellow golf shirt on, taking the turn at the Masters. Now all I have to do is keep a straight face, as if it’s routine, and walk down the left side of the middle. That would bring me a little closer, without having to yell, to say hi. I better figure out quickly what to say, just in case she compliments me on a nice golf shot.

Oh great? I hit it so far. The foursome ahead of me is yelling and waving. I completely forgot to wait until they were out of reach. How embarrassing is this going to be? I am the only golfer in my group out on the fairway. All my golf buddies are on the other side of the fairway. How do you try to impress someone with a great golf shot, only to find out, the shot almost hit someone? This is not good. What’s even worse? I think her parents are walking my way. Great! Let’s meet the parents!

Perfect timing! My buddies need a hand on the other side of the fairway to look for a lost ball! It’s a good thing I carry an extra shirt, just in case it rains. I think I should change this bright yellow golf shirt on the opposite side of the fairway. First impression is going to have to wait.

he happy golfer is the one who’s getting better. Fortunately, there are many ways to boost your game, from practicing harder to making a swing change to finding the one tip that makes everything click. On the following pages we’ll give you plenty to get happy about.

Leading the charge this year is Phil Mickelson. Phil has been a leading pro for many years, so he knows a thing or two about how we try to help golfers like you.

He’s also pretty keen around the greens, so we asked him to reveal the short-game secrets that have made him a guy the other pros watch. Phil’s coach. Butch Harmon, adds his favorite full-swing tips. Finally, we asked PGA Tour players to tell us how they improved in areas the stats said were holding them back. What worked for them might be just what you need. Remember you have to find the best route for you to improve your game. And be happy.

basIC ConCePTs Come fIRsTA solid game from 50 yards and in is all about following a small set of basic principles. Excel at them, and you’ll be able to pull off almost any shot.

The first principle is what I call “hinge and hold.” For crisp contact and good distance control on all greenside shots, hinge your wrists very early on the backswing and avoid swinging your lead arm back more than necessary. On the downswing, feel like you maintain the hinge, so your hands remain ahead of the clubhead for a descending strike.

buTCH on ball PosITIonThe average golfer plays the ball too far forward with the driver. This causes the shoulders and hips to shift open, and the right arm to get too straight. From there, the player swings the club back steeply and to the outside. Plus, the backswing turn is restricted. To position the ball correctly with the driver, line it up with the breast logo on your shirt, or just inside your left heel.

keeP THe Hands movInGAnother key principle is to accelerate your hands on the downswing and keep accelerating them toward the target until well after the ball is gone. Slowing your hands is a killer because it ruins your release, changes impact conditions and often causes you to hit the shot fat. A related concept is to maintain the loft of your wedge through impact and beyond, the face aimed at the sky for as long as possible. I want to keep the same clubface loft I established at address.

T

buTCH on WeIGHT sHIfT & on GeTTInG baCkHere’s a good rule: Your weight should always move in the same direction as the club. When the club swings back, your weight moves back; when the club swings through, your weight moves through. Many amateurs hit the ball with their weight falling away from the target, which leads to contact behind the ball or cutting across it. Many golfers swing back too far, causing the arms to collapse. Your arm swing should stop when your body stops turning back; that’ll keep everything in sequence. If the arms overswing, they have to catch up later, and most golfers can’t do that consistently. Try this thought to avoid a long, loose backswing: Keep the hands away from the head at the top.

a 3-sTeP GuIde To THe seTuPI’ve followed the same short-game setup formula for years, and I think it will help every player’s consistency:

(1) Align your feet and the clubface square to the target.

(2) Rotate the clubface open until you establish sufficient loft for the shot you’re playing. Remember to regrip the club after you open the face, so you don’t simply rotate your hands and “fake” the open clubface.

(3) Rotate your stance and upper body open until the face is aimed at the target and make your normal swing.

sHoRT PuTTs: THInk 25-75On shorter putts you must accelerate the putter through the ball and impart a smooth, true roll. Try to make your backstroke shorter than your follow-through. The stroke should break down as 25 percent back and 75 percent through, though it varies slightly depending on the length of the putt. As for obtaining a true roll, avoid hitting down on the ball or catching it on the upswing. You want the putterhead moving level, with the shaft angle at impact the same as it was at address.
