The Dallas Stars Metro Hockey League (DSMHL) is focused on providing its players with age-appropriate development, that is

ice-centered on individual growth.

This is a development model, not a competitive model.

The Dallas Stars have recently partnered with USA Hockey to redesign the Metro Hockey League and with that

comes a renewed focus on the quality of the ice-time and practices provided to players within the DSMHL. The

goal of the Dallas Stars Metro Hockey League is to focus energy on what is going to matter the most in our player’s

development cycles:

1) Individual skills

The Skills component of the League practices & the Player Enhancement Program will be addressed by

implementing station based practices outlined by USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) that

provides age-appropriate guidelines & curriculum.

2) Power skating

The Power Skating component of the League practices & Player Enhancement Program is a collaborative effort

between Dwight Mullins & Todd Eldredge. Dwight is the current Director of Hockey Development for the Dallas

Stars’ Dr Pepper StarCenters. Todd Eldredge, World Champion and three-time Olympian in Men’s Singles Figure

Skating, has been a power skating consultant for numerous hockey players across the amateur and junior ranks

and is the Frisco Skating Programs Manager.

Today’s game is the fastest that it’s ever

been. With that, skating is by far the most

important skill a player not only needs, but

needs to continually work on, in order to

be successful”

Playing the game is

where kids learn the

game, in its simplest

form, fun.

Skills become more

refined, a child’s

physical and mental

makeup is stronger and the friendships

they developed

early on continue to

grow.

Tougher competition

and more of a focus

on mastering skills

play an increased role in a child’s

development.

Maximum development occurs through .

Without developing skills and certain physical / mental attributes at the appropriate time, the long-term

prospects of becoming a truly elite player diminish each day.

The chart below exhibits the critical periods or windows of development for young athletes and shows the

ultimate effect that the ADM model has to maximize growth during each specific year of your child’s

development.

“You put a young child on a full-length golf course and have

them play from the blues when they're 7 years old and a lot of

those kids probably wouldn't want to continue playing the

game. Why would you do it in hockey, when you could do a

cross-ice game instead? The kids will get more touches of the

puck and the goalkeepers will be more active and make

more saves. In a cross-ice game, they're going to see much

more action

The American Development Model allows us to integrate training, competition and recovery

programming with relation to biological development so that we can fully reach a child’s

.

This study, conducted by Charles

University in Prague, details the vast

difference for hockey players in

station based practices as opposed

to the traditional practice models.

-Jerry YorkHead Coach, Boston College& NCAA’s winningest hockey coach

One of the great things I’ve noticed in USA

Hockey’s ADM is that there are more reps

because there are smaller-area games

and more players are frequently touching

pucks. We do a lot of small-area games

during the course of our season”

We know that goalies can often be ignored, especially at the youth levels, not with this program. Although goalies may participate with the other skaters, specific instruction will be provided during these camps to maximize a player’s abilities at the goalie position. Young goaltenders should possess a basic knowledge of the position so they can go through easy fundamentals at every practice with their Team.

USA Hockey Goaltending believes that there is seven (7) Goaltender Basics that each young goaltender should learn in their development stages

Every great goaltender has a great foundation that focuses on the basics of the position.

1) Stance 5) C-Cut

2) Butterfly 6) Full Recovery

3) T-Push 7) On Ice Recovery

4) Parallel Shuffle
