System to shut downfour stations over theMemorial Day weekend
The transit authority plans to shut
four Metrorail stations along the
Blue and Orange lines for the entire
Memorial Day weekend, even asthousands of visitors head for events
in the nations capital.
The closings will include the
station adjacent to RFK Stadium,
site of Stars & Stripes & Spokes,
a four-day festival of motorcycle
enthusiasts.
The Stadium-Armory station
will be shut Friday night through
the night of May 30, along with the
Capitol South, Eastern Market and
Potomac Avenue stations. There
will be no service on the Blue and
Orange lines between Federal Cen-
ter SW and Minnesota Avenue and
Benning Road.
Jim Hughes, Metros planning
director for such maintenance activ-
ities, said Friday that the RFK festi-
val is a new factor with an unknown
impact on transit and traffic.
But he was confident in the abili-
ty of the free shuttle bus system that
Metro sets up to bridge interruptions
in service on long weekends.
Rail service on the western side of
the disruption, the Mall side, will be
as it normally is on weekends.
Trains on the eastern side of the
lines are scheduled to run 25 min-
utes apart.
The centerpiece of th
planned Memorial Day w
work is the replacement
track switches at the Easter
ket Station.
Such projects are so co
that they require three days
tinuous work to complete.
The logistics of creatin
work space, setting up thlines to operate in separa
tions and providing shuttl
to bridge the gaps result in t
ing of more than one statio
When the transit aut
schedules such a big shutd

Metro will operate free shuttle
buses to bridge the gaps be-
tween the stations in the workzone. The shuttles will be sched-
uled to meet each arriving train.
Riders planning on using the
shuttle buses from end to end
should add about 40 minutes to
their schedules, Metro says. (AP)

Tanger Factory Outlet Centers
Inc. has signed a deal with the Peter-

lets to the complex. Top company
and county officials plan to make
a formal announcement Monday
at the International Council of
son Cos., which opened National
Harbor in 2008.
Their relationship with leading
national brands and experience in
creating first-class retail destina-
tions are a tremendous comple-
ment to the existing retail, restau-
rant and resort offerings at National
Harbor.
No leases have been signed
for the proposed $100 million,
350,000-square-foot building, which
will sit on about 40 acres just off the
Beltway. But Steven B. Tanger, pres-
ident and chief executive of Tanger,
said his company has relationships
with nearly 500 brand-name stores,
including Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th,
Nike, Cole Haan, Brooks Brothers,
Coach and Tommy Hilfiger.
Officials say they hope to break
ground on the project by the end
of the year, meaning the outlets
could be open sometime in 2013.
