BRIEF HISTORYBuilt between 1869 and 1872, Arundel Cathedral owes its existence to the generosity of Henry, XV Duke of Norfolk. The architect, Joseph Hansom (the inventor of the Hansom Cab but well-known as a church architect) was inspired by the architectural grandeur of the French Gothic style of the early fifteenth century. The Cathedral is well known for its famous Corpus Christi Carpet of Flowers which was introduced over 100 years ago by the XV Duke of Norfolk. Coinciding with the new formation of the Arundel and Brighton Diocese in 1965, the parish church became its Cathedral. Following Saint Philip Howard’s canonization in 1970, the dedication was changed to The Cathedral of Our Lady and Saint Philip Howard. His relics are buried in his tomb at the Cathedral, which has become a modern place of pilgrimage. Today there is a space in the life of the Cathedral that can only be filled by you!
