AMI Prognostics and Heath Management Guide
• Working group meeting weekly throughout 2014
– you are welcome to participate
• Engagement of Arend Koert (Kinectrics) – expert in
metering accelerated life testing
• Recent focus has been the sampling processes that are
used for each PHM process
• Continued EPRI interest in conducting a PHM Business
Case workshop with CALCE in 2015. Would you attend?

2 to 150 KHz Impact on Meters
• Previously reported-on in this forum
• Issues noted with certain IEC meter types.
• Ongoing action in IEC: 61000-4-19
– EMC testing for meters – test for immunity to conducted,
differential mode disturbances in the 2 to 150KHz range
• 2014 EPRI project – working with Hydro Quebec to test
ANSI meters in the same way. Test design and setup in
process, will report back findings

IntelliGrid – Project Set FAdvanced Metering Systems
Project Set Lead:
Brian Seal
(865) 218-8181
Four Parts:
1. Open standards and interoperability
2. Optimizing the value of AMI systems through
new uses and value streams
3. Meter/AMI O&M: identifying best practices for
selection, deployment, operation, maintenance,
management, lifecycle planning
4. The meter: investigating solid state meter
performance, accuracy, and reliability

161F Sub-Project: 1. Open standards and interoperability
Issue
• AMI systems are proprietary and utilities
are locked-in to single sources of supply
• Lack of competition results in higher prices
and lack of innovation
• Vendors are not inclined to change
Approach
• Developing an open reference architecture
and components
• Direct contribution to standards
organizations guide the direction of industry
• Vendor engagement, interoperability
workshops

161F Sub-Project: 2. Optimizing Advanced Metering System Value and Utilization
Issue
• AMI systems have the potential to be utilized in many ways and their data to be processed for many purposes.
• Need to identify and prove-out potential additional uses of AMI systems and data. System impacts and benefits need to be quantified in order to aid utilities in business case development and in optimizing the value of AMI assets.
Approach
• Work collaboratively, sharing experiences and learnings
• Perform data analytics and laboratory evaluations
• Work with meter manufacturers directly

161F Sub-Project: 3. Advanced Metering Systems Operations and Management
Issue
• Management and operation of AMI fixed networks
is a new endeavor for many utilities.
• The systems are recent inventions, and best
practices re just being discovered for their
deployment, operation, health monitoring,
management, and replacement.
Approach
• Track industry experiences.
• Utility focus groups developing common approaches
• Engaging subject-matter experts to document best
practices. Assess together, refine.

161F Sub-Project:
4. Meter Performance and Reliability Testing
Addressing the meter-centric topics that are regularly discussed in this forum:
–Hot socket detection
–Meter over voltage tolerance/sensitivity
–DC field (currents and magnets)
–Accelerated life testing
– 2 to 150 KHz sensitivity
