SAE is the world’s leading educator in creative media industries. Established in 1976, we now span the globe with 53 campuses in 27 countries.

In Australia, SAE provides courses to more than 2500 students across 6 campuses in Brisbane, Byron Bay, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

SAE offers government accredited courses including certificates, diplomas, and bachelor degrees. Our programs cover 6 specialist discipline streams: Animation, Audio, Design, Film, Games, Web & Mobile

At SAE we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional programs in world-class facilities. We ensure our students receive an outstanding education, internationally recognised qualifications, and industry-relevant skills. Our graduates really do have the competitive edge.

In February 2011, SAE Institute and Qantm College became part of Navitas, a leading global education provider.

The consolidated expertise and resources of SAE, Qantm and Navitas ensures our students have the skills and industry knowledge they need for a rewarding career in the entertainment and creative media industries.

SAE Institute and Qantm College, as part of Navitas, are now known as SAE Australia. Following on from the success of SAE in Australia, the first foreign SAE campus was opened in London in 1985. As in Australia, in the international arena SAE proved to be highly successful in providing a quality, practical and theoretical curriculum to aspiring professionals in the music industry.

Not long after the London campus was opened, SAE established its first European institute in Munich. Munich was to be the first of many foreign language SAE Institutes worldwide.

SAE was well established in Europe, Asia and New Zealand by the mid-90s. The first of 7 campuses opened in the USA in 1998.

Our History SAE AustraliaSAE was established in Australia in 1976 as the world’s first audio engineering institute. The early success of SAE and the demand for our practical, theory-based and industry relevant training quickly led to the establishment of other campuses nationwide. By 1982, SAE had campuses in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. The purpose-built Byron Bay campus, offering unsurpassed audio facilities, opened in 2003.

From the establishment of SAE’s first institutes and courses, government accredited VET and Higher Education qualifi-cations were introduced. SAE has now evolved to become a global leader in creative media education.

In 2004, SAE acquired Qantm College, a leading digital media educator specialising in 3D animation, games design and pro-gramming, web development and graphic design. With SAE, Qantm has since expanded into the global arena as a preemi-nent digital media educator.

Rode Classic II Limited EditionLimited edition vintage-voiced valve microphone

To commemorate ‘15 Years of Classic Sound’ RØDE has issued this collector’s edition of the Classic II tube microphone, exclusively limited to only 500 editions worldwide.

The RØDE Classic and Classic II microphones were a labour of love. Each element, be it the capsule, the transformer, the valve, the body or the cable were of the finest quality available.

At the heart of both microphones is the 6072 Twin Triode valve, as found in most of history’s most revered transducers. Its unparalleled sonic characteristics have made it incredibly sought after, and with production ceasing over 30 years ago RØDE were lucky to secure a production quantity of “new old stock” to be used exclusively in the Classic.

The transformer, custom designed by Jensen to perfectly match the 6072, pairs with the valve to provide the signature Classic warmth. Both the Classic and Classic II capsules are hand assembled dual pressure gradient transducers, sputtered with pure gold.

The centre-electrode design found in the Classic was modified to edge-terminated in its successor, resulting in a slightly lower noise level. The Classic II features nine polar patterns, in addition to a variable PAD and high pass filters.

The microphone body is machined from solid brass and polished by hand before coating with stain nickel.

For the very first time the RØDE Classic is finished in a lustrous matte black, with the ‘15 Years of Classic Sound’ logo proudly etched onto the microphone’s brass body.

The microphone case and power transformer are also finished in black, and marked with the commemorative logo. A second 6072 twin triode tube (NOS) is supplied in an etched aluminium storage cylinder to ensure that this microphone’s classic sound will last for many years to come.

Also included is a leather bound embossed collector’s coffee table book, documenting the history of RØDE’s flagship microphone.

The Best Computer SpeakersLimited edition vintage-voiced valve microphone

If someone asked me what’s the best all-around buy in a 2.0-channel computer or desktop speaker system today, I’d recommend the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40. We held a blind listening panel to find out it offers sound that’s competitive with everything we’ve heard under $300, yet it’s readily available for just $119.

That said, the AV 40s can be a bit large and not very nice to look at, so we have some alternative picks as well. The Audioengine A2+ is sleekly designed, super-compact, and sounds fantastic, although it isn’t real loud and doesn’t have a lot of bass. The Grace Digital GDI-BTSP201 sounds good (although not as good as the AV 40 or the A2+) and adds Bluetooth wireless plus a user-friendly design and control layout. The Edifier Spinnaker has a cool, cutting-edge design with a handy wireless remote, Bluetooth, and pretty good sound.

Unfortunately, while all these speakers have okay bass response, if you want really big bass, you’ll probably want a 2.1 system, which will include a separate subwoofer. (It’s difficult or impossible to add a subwoofer to most 2.0 computer speaker systems.) We expect to test 2.1 systems soon.

Why should you trust me?

As Stereos Expert for About.com and an editor and writer for numerous audio-focused magazines and websites including Sound & Vision and Home Theater, I’ve been testing speakers for more than 20 years.

By my reckoning, I’ve conducted more blind speaker tests than any other journalist in the U.S., including a recent evaluation of outdoor speakers for the Wirecutter. I even built a custom modular audio switcher just for the purpose of blind testing. And I’ve also done lab measurements of hundreds of speakers; here’s an easy-to-understand primer (PDF) I wrote on that topic. In fact, I did lab measurements of the speakers tested here that you can see on the About.com Stereos page.

Key Features• 3” polypropylene-coated woofers for tight, accurate bass• 1” ferrofluid-cooled silk cone tweeters for clear, pristine highs• OptImage III tweeter wave guides for superior imaging and detail• 10-watt-per-channel amplifier• magnetic shielding for use near computer video monitors• RCA inputs for connecting gaming systems, DJ gear, mixers, and more• front-panel 1/8” stereo auxiliary input for connecting your laptop or desktop computer, MP3 player, or • other audio sources• front-panel 1/8” headphone output for connecting headphones• front-panel controls for volume and on/off• dense wood cabinet with bass reflex port design for deep, rich sound

ewWacom Cintiq 24HD touchThe pen-enabled display tacks on multi-touch gestures

A few weeks ago, Wacom started shipping a new version of its Cintiq 24HD pen display for creative pros that first broke from cover last September. The appropriately named Cintiq 24HD touch carries virtually the same outer styling as the OG model. An ergonomic base still cradles the massive 24-inch screen and can be configured to your particular seating preference. On the inside, though, there’s a host of changes. As the name suggests, the major difference between the two is the addition of multi-touch controls to the more recent offering. However, the added functionality does come with a pretty hefty price tag, as the Cintiq 24HD touch costs $1,100 more than its elder sibling. Are the additions of touch gestures and an improved display panel enough to justify forking over the extra coin, or will the less expensive option work just fine in a studio setting? Read on to find out as we tackle that very question.

As we’ve already mentioned, the Cintiq 24HD touch has much the same design as the previous, non-touch offering. In fact, the only difference you’ll notice is that the controls at the top of the display’s face have changed -- and that’s if you’re looking closely. These buttons now toggle touch functionality on / off, bring up an on-screen keyboard and display ExpressKey / control reminders. One thing that hasn’t changed: the weight. Undoubtedly, the first thing you’ll notice is the mass of the 62.9-pound (28.6 kg) kit. If you happen to forget about this bit of information, your courier will be quick to remind you when it arrives. When you tack that figure on with the 30.3 x 18.3-inch (769.3 x 463.74mm) surface area that also remains relatively unchanged, you’ll find a substantial amount of space will need to be dedicated to the high-end peripheral. In other words, once you find a resting spot, you’ll think twice about relocating.

Let’s chat about the base for a bit, shall we? This unit rests atop an enclosed black box that hides all of the requisite cables from sight. Cables head into the back of the base and connect beneath two user-removable panels on both sides of display’s back -- making the only visible port the lone USB connector on the left side of the front. Metal arms reach up from the black platform and sport two pairs of hinges for adjusting the viewing angle. The first set is level with the base and allows the device to rotate forward, toward the user. A second sits on the side of the display and can be used to rotate the panel between being parallel with your desk to sitting perfectly perpendicular to it. Large handles on the 24HD’s sides control the latter adjustment while a release that’s situated on the base allows for the former. The aforementioned arms are the only two parts of the device that aren’t shrouded in black, providing an aesthetic accent to the rest of the behemoth.

Moving on to the business portion of things, the 24-inch H-IPS panel, we’ll begin to encounter the new features of the Cintiq 24HD touch. Again, on the surface, the display appears to be an exact replica of the previous version. A set of programmable ExpressKeys rest on either side of the ultra-wide bezel and a single Touch Ring is included with each. Resting along the main display are two Touch Strips, too. You still won’t find any printed-on labels here, as all of that information remains on-screen like we’ve encountered on the regular 24HD and the Intuos5 touch. Speaking of the extra real estate around the outside, what may seem like a waste initially is actually a nice place to rest forearms and elbows when you’re in the heat of a Photoshop editing session. We quickly decided that the added space was a welcome addition indeed.

One thing that hasn’t changed: the weight. Undoubtedly, the first thing you’ll notice is the mass of the kit.

Auto Desk - MAYAThe pen-enabled display tacks on multi-touch gestures

Imagination is faster than light. It can spirit us to places billions of millions of miles away almost instantaneously, defying time and space in the process. Unfortunately, our fledgling human technology always limps behind our vision. While scientists churn away at the problems that prevent us from zipping between star systems, we can battle our own discontent with 3D animation software like Autodesk Maya. This application provides the rampant human imagination with an infinite sandbox to play in. You can create 3D characters, scenery and animations of cinematic quality that are perfect for movies, games and broadcast television. This software package is our TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award winner because of its emphasis on customizable workflow and the many built-in features for simulating life-like characters. No other product on the market provides an equal spread of features. Make no mistake, the learning curve is very steep. Nevertheless, if you have the patience and motivation to learn, Maya will take you to foreign soil that human beings may never discover without you.

There are four distinct camps in the model-building universe: polygon, subdivision, NURBS and sculpting. Each modeling style comes with pros and cons. (NURBS, for example, uses Bezier curves to create meshes, which are ideal for simulating mechanical parts and smooth surfaces. Unfortunately, they are also harder to manipulate and have a reputation for not playing nice when building organic characters.) Maya supports all four methods, which really opens doors for expert modelers. You can select the methodology that best fits the needs of each creation on an individual basis.

Beginners can start polygon modeling with a wide array of primitives that can be squished, scaled and extruded to obtain the desired form. Once you have the basic shape and structure of your model, Maya’s soft selection tool and sculpting brush give you fine-tuned control over the critical details. These features are just the tip of the iceberg – Maya is stuffed to the gills with modeling tools large and small. With the new Scene Assembly tools found in Maya 2014 you can manage your production assets with even greater ease. You can easily swap between representations which helps you create large complex worlds in an organized manner.

Maya gets its name from the Hindu concept of illusion, and it lives up to the moniker very well. No matter how detailed and intricate your 3D mesh may be, your illusion will be incomplete without realistic texture and color – especially if you plan to stitch your creation in to real-life video footage. Fortunately, Maya offers great texturing features and even better materials and physics to give your models that sense of mass and realism.

UV texture maps are a well-known and efficient means of coloring your models. You can create textures externally to Maya, or you can generate them with the paint tool within the application. The result is an image file that folds around the model like a skin. You can add actual texture with a bump map. Like the UV map, a bump map generates topography on the surface of a model by drawing data from a skin-like image. Dark spots will produce valleys and white spots produce peaks.

Maya’s many material simulations are extremely attractive. No other 3D animation software can compare when it comes to simulating fluids, cloth, skin, hair, fur and muscle. These features are easy to apply and produce very realistic behavior. We were especially impressed with the muscle feature. This tool allows you to string your skeletons with compressible muscles that give your characters an organic look and feel. Although some competitors provide similar functions, none are as intuitive or complete. Maya also supports particles, rigid body dynamics and soft body dynamics

RED - ScarletThe camera thats getting all the attention at the moment

The Scarlet-X was finally launched on November 3rd last year, just a few hours after Canon announced the C300. Initially people, including myself, were underwhelmed by the C300 compared to the Scarlet. But things change. Once I read up on what the Scarlet could actually do, I realised that this is not a camera in competition with the C300 at all. It is a camera that occupies a unique place in the market. Whereas the C300 is an all-rounder, the Scarlet is a specialist camera. It is simply the cheapest way to acquire 4k video with a super 35mm sensor. Basically they’re taking chips made for the RED Epic which apparently hadn’t passed the QC and sticking them in the same (more or less) housing as the EPIC-X and limiting the features. That is it in a nutshell. A superb 4k acquisition camera.

If like me you have had experience with an Epic then Scarlet will frustrate you. It’s like having a Ferrari but being limited to 1st gear…The 1st gear is amazing but you SO want to open her up. It looks great, handles the same but doesn’t do most of what the Epic can do.

Mmmmm….that analogy kind of works. How about it’s like being a member of a swish club but you don’t get to go into VIP area or it’s like being given the new XBOX console but limited to just one game! That is enough for analogies….onto the review! Feel free to add your own below!

Unfortunately the cool feature from the Epic, that is HDR-X, the ability to capture two streams of information at a different exposure simultaneously to create a much higher dynamic range, is missing in 4k. It only appears at 3k and even then only for 24p, not 25p.

The camera shoots up to 5k and when it does that the part of the sensor used is larger than super 35mm. More like APS-H. Unfortunately it is useful for nothing more than stills or timelapse as its fastest frame rate is 12FPS. Although you can get away with a little video with it if you need it as you can see in my test video.

So really it’s 4k that is the main resolution for this camera. Not as big as the 5k but sill plenty! Also it’s super 35mm at 4k so that’s just fine as it’s the standard and as I have already said the 4k is exceptional.

Now for off speed, currently the fastest frame rate you have is 60fps at a windowed 2k. That means the field of view is half that of the 4k. A massive pain if you want to keep the same frame, lens etc but suddenly need slow motion. For me in my tests I found the 2k 60fps vastly inferior in quality to the 4k both in noise pattern and in resolution. Even when exported to full HD ProRes. I found this with my EPIC too but I rarely needed to use the 2k in the EPIC, as it can do 120FPS in 5K and that was more than enough for most things! I have always found the 2k to have a disappointing amount of noise in it.

3K is a good compromise. It can do 48fps (so no 25p HDRx in 3K, only 24p) and that looks pretty good. A less severe crop, sharper and more detailed. For me if I owned this camera the 3K 48fps would be my slow motion of choice. For the cost of 12FPS you can a much better looking image.

120FPS is coming but only at 1k. Until I see it, who knows what it will be like. The 2k should be improved upon with firmware upgrades. Fingers crossed on that one! The biggest problem is that the 4k is just so damn superb that anything next to it suffers immensely.

ALUMNI - SuperstarBilly Butler and his team win an oscar

How did you get into modelling?I originally wanted to be a rigger / animator and started at Photon VFX doing this until i saw the lead modeller at the time doing his thing which instantly changed my mind. So I showed him my stuff, he took me up to HR and they switched departments for me as soon as possible. I’ve been a modeller now for nearly 8 years.

What course did you study at SAE Institute, Byron Bay?I studied in my home town, SAE Institute, Byron Bay. It was the 3D Animation course they had just launched. We were basically the test dummies for the course since it was their first one.

What kind of portfolio did you need to be eligible for the course? No portfolio needed at the time, although I did put together a reel of my best 3D, 2D and fine art.

What was the best thing about the facilities at SAE Institute? The facilities were great at the time. Classes were well set up with fast machines etc.

What are your top 3 tips for students currently studying?1. Before specialising in one particular area of 3D, get a good understanding of all departments and become a good generalist.2. Its a tough industry to get into, so be prepared to move around the world.3. Make your demo reel interesting to look at. Something that grabs people’s attention.

What was your first big break into the Industry?Photon VFX, Gold Coast, Australia.I started out as a generalist doing previs on Daybreakers then moved onto Animalia for 2 years as a modeller.

Where are you currently working?Framestore, London.

What is your prefered software for modelling?Maya, Mudbox..

GoPro - Hero 3The camera thats getting all the attention at the moment

How do you continue to improve on an already class-leading product? That must be the question echoing around the design and engineering halls of GoPro, the company behind the eponymous action camera that created a whole new market of devices.

The Hero3+ is the latest offering that brings a range of important updates to the tried-and-tested formula, all the while keeping the same form factor as the Hero3.

The waterproof housing has been redesigned, reducing the dimensions ever so slightly to make a 20 per cent smaller package than the Hero3 inside its previous casing. It’s important to note that the actual camera itself hasn’t been made smaller -- for all intents and purposes the unit is identical to the previous version. Only the waterproof housing has been made slimmer, which means less bulk for mounting purposes. What’s most pleasing about the new casing are the new buttons. Now they are larger and flatter, making for less painful button presses when the camera is in the housing.

One of the most significant ways in which GoPro has defined the action camera category is through the robust mounting system. There are a couple of new mounts available for users to hook up the Hero3+, which include:

Jaws -- a flexible clamp that’s backwards compatible with older GoPro cameras and can be attached to a number of different surfaces and objects, like treesJunior Chesty -- a smaller version of the chest harness, specifically designed for childrenHead strap and quick clip -- used to mount the GoPro to baseball hats, belts or straight on the head. The frame rates of the Hero3+ remain largely unchanged from the earlier Black Edition, with the camera able to record at 1440/48p, 1080/60p, 960/100p and 720/120p. This also means that the 4K recording feature is also the same, still only able to achieve this resolution at 15p, while 2.7K video is at 30p.

To somewhat make up for the 4K specifications, GoPro has introduced Superview. This recording mode gives you a wider field of view than on the previous camera. It takes the 4:3 image and dynamically stretches it to the 16:9 aspect ratio. This means that you effectively get the same content from a 4:3 frame but made to fit in a wider, more cinematic format. The image stretching occurs at the edges of the frame. Therefore, as long as the main subject is in the centre of the frame, distortion is kept to a minimum. Superview is available in both 1080p and 720p recording and is turned on by default.

Auto low-light mode helps the Hero3+ produce better-looking footage when the ambient lighting conditions change. Generally, it will drop the frame rate automatically, depending on the mode you are currently recording in. For example, if you are shooting at 1440/48p and the camera detects a low-light situation, the frame rate will drop to 1440/24p..

DRONES - Meet the OctocopterBoldly going where men cannot

Do drones pose a new threat to our privacy, or are they just the fruits of innovative technology with benefits for governments and industry?

A mini inquiry at Parliament House in Canberra on Friday will try to answer the question.

The drone “roundtable” inquiry by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs follows the release of the 2012-13 annual report from the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner last year. In the report, Privacy Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim, said two pieces of technology — aerial drones and Google Glass — had caught the community’s attention in relation to privacy because of their potential for collecting personal information.

Speaking with Fairfax Media about the roundtable, which he dubbed a “mini” inquiry, chair and Nationals MP George Christensen said its purpose was to look at drone regulation, possible applications and privacy implications, and determine if regulatory changes were required. It is likely report back in March.

Mr Christensen cited recent reports indicating the Australian Lot Feeders Association had complained about NSW Animal Liberation flying drones over farms to capture video footage of alleged animal cruelty..

“So it is out there and we thought that before it becomes an issue that gets away from parliament or the government we would do some work on it to see what we could come up with,” Mr Christensen said.

“At the end of it the committee will go away and look through the evidence presented and maybe come up with some recommendations to government or we could alternatively look to go to a full blown inquiry - although I sincerely doubt it to be honest.

“I think this will probably get some good insight out of the issues.”

Mr Christensen said the committee had already received some private briefings in which it was told that there were “significant loop holes” that governments, corporations and animal liberation organisations could use to “get away with” invading people’s privacy using drones.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Airservices Australia, CSIRO, the Australian Privacy Commissioner, Australian Federal Police, Australian Privacy Foundation, drone company Parrot, the Australian Law Reform Commission and others are among the invited parties asked to attend on Friday.

Sometimes, humor is established with well-animated cutscenes; other times, it’s Nolan North’s voice over (of three characters: Deadpool, and the two voices in Deadpool’s head) that sells the zany, disturbed hero’s presence. High Moon did a great job of pacing the humor, ensuring that un-interactive segments are bookended with fast gameplay.

“Deadpool was crafted with a love and respect for the character...”

http://www.gamesradar.com/deadpool-the-game-review/

DEADPOOLCreated by Highmoon Studios

If you’re reading this, then High Moon Studio’s Deadpool was made specifically for you. No, this isn’t some misguided attempt to match the meta, fourth-wall-breaking nature of the titular Merc with a Mouth-Deadpool is a game very obviously made for the kind of gamers that read this site. The kind of gamer knows

who Nolan North is, and finds jokes about his voice being in everything funny. The kind of gamer that would appreciate Batman-style “BAM!” and “POW!” sound effects whenever you hit the Batman-style counter button. The kind of gamer that’s reading this review, right now. Deadpool was crafted with a love and respect for the character, and the result is something that should make fans of the crass, rude mercenary very happy.

Deadpool starts the game on the phone with the president of High Moon Studios, discussing the details of the game you’re currently playing. It’s not the only time he calls High Moon, either--whenever he finds a glitch in the world, or wants to yell about a boring section, he whips out his cell phone and dials their president to complain. Other games have attempted fourth-wall shattering comedy before, but none have pulled it off as successfully as Deadpool, which leverages an acute knowledge of its fanbase to create a consistently funny experience.

Video game and pop culture references are sandwiched between comic book jokes, which are explained well enough that even someone with only a passing knowledge of the Marvel universe should be able to navigate the story without a problem. Sometimes it simply abandons comic canon in favor of better gameplay, openly acknowledging any plot holes it creates with funny dialogue that chastises you for questioning the story. It’s playful and amazingly self-aware, consistently defying expectations with crude jokes and shocking laughs.

CAN YOU HACK IT?The big wigs in hacking

“Hacker” is a term used to refer to a variety of individuals and communities. Generally a hacker is somebody whose mission is to break into remote computers without proper authorization through the use of communication networks, the most common of which is the Internet. Though the term “hacker” essentially refers to somebody (normally computer programmers) who can subvert computer security without any malicious purpose, the definition of the word has evolved into a term referring to computer criminals who exploits their computer savvy abilities to illegally access computer systems for malicious purposes. Here is a list of the top 25 most notorious hackers to ever get caught:

Jeanson James AnchetaA dropout of Downey High School in California, Jeanson James Ancheta became a hacker in 2004 after he started to work with software robots called “botnets.” His hacking practice began when he discovered rxbot, a computer worm that has the capacity to infect and destroy computer networks. He became the first person to have ever been charged for controlling a huge number of hijacked computers in the United States.

Nahshon Even-ChaimAlso known as Phoenix, Nahshon Even-Chaim was the first computer hacker to have ever been convicted in Australia. His mission was to break into computer systems by dialling indirectly or placing a call through X.25 networks or internet connectivity. Among the websites he damaged were those of the University of California, Berkley, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Hacking computers was his way of ridiculing the entire computer security community.

Raphael GrayAt age 19, Raphael Gray was able to hack several computer systems around the world in just a matter of one month. His mission was to gain unauthorized access to credit card information, which eventually netted him millions of dollars. Dubbed “The Bill Gates Hacker,” Gray broke into secure computer systems and published all the credit card information he accessed as part of his multimillion credit card pound mission.

”I’m a bit of a hacker fanatic and know a fair bit about that industry and cyber crime and cyber warfare.“ Seth Gordon
