The history of vehicle dismantling goes back to the start of

Fully automated vehicle

begins here and now!

In the past, manual labor was required to remove a vehicle’s wheelbase,

engine and other parts in readiness for compressing the body for steel scrap.

Japan’s first automated vehicle dismantling device, developed by KOBELCO in

1979, made vehicle dismantling more mechanized, more efficient and safer.

In the 30 years since, KOBELCO has used feedback from work sites in

continuing efforts to make vehicle recycling more efficient. Aluminum and

other non-ferrous metals began to draw attention as suitable resources for

recycling, and so we made more exhaustive dismantling work possible by

designing a clamp arm and Nibbler that can efficiently remove valuable metal

parts from the engine. This has now been developed into a vehicle dismantling

device that can turn all the recyclable parts of a vehicle, from body to

component parts, into re-usable resources.

In 1979 KOBELCO developed Japan’s first automatedvehicle dismantling device. It set off a revolution in the scrap metal business.

With handling machines fittedwith forks and magnets, compacted vehicle bodies

are fed into the shredder.

Demand for scrap metal continues to grow in Japan and all over the world. The scrap metal recycling

business not only has to handle growing volumes but also meet a range of other sophisticated requirements

that include production quality, upgrading of processing efficiency, together with safety assurances and

environmental protection measures. KOBELCO’s metal recycling equipment is based on long experience in

this field, and provides optimal performance for breaking up, separating, sorting and handling scrap, whilealso boosting efficiency, saving energy and reducing labor.

End-of-life vehicle dismantling has beenmechanized using specialized vehicle dismantlingmachines and multi-dismantling machines. Non-ferrous metal components such as engines aredetached, hard components that will not pass theshredding process are taken out, and evenharnesses are removed in an efficient process.

KOBELCO’s innovative clamp arm, made to our own design

Ideal for vehicle and general scrapdisposalJaw width of 800 mm can grasp a passengercar wheel across its diameter.Cutting power of max. 822 kN {90tf} can cutthrough H200 to H250 steel.Powerful tip grabbing force of 372 kN {38tf}can crush tire rims.High torque swing motor has abundantrotational power for stripping.Speedy opening/closing control operated by ahigh-pressure control cylinder (29.4 MPa).Straight cutter shape for easy cutting.

Adjustable clamp arm opens to the size of theitem to be clamped and closes round it for atighter grip.Bowl-shaped grips on the inside simplifygrasping and holding. Two different shapes of teeth fitted on the topare useful for cutting, bending and folding.

In addition to its basic function of

stabilizing objects for dismantling, the KOBELCO clamp arm can beopened/closed to ensure a tightergrip for cutting tasks etc. The typesof grips and teeth were designed tofulfill a wide range of functions andhave proved popular with operators.

Multi-dismantling machine forwide range of applicationsVehicle Dismantling

Vehicle dismantling goesmore smoothlyVehicle dismantling is simple workinvolving repeated grasping, stripp-ing and separating procedures, andalmost all can be completed by asingle operator working alone. It’ssafer, too, with no need fordangerous gas cutting etc. With themachine, work proceeds at aboutfour times the speed of manualdismantling. (KOBELCO tests)

Improved collection rate ofvaluable harnesses

Vehicle Dismantling Using a Multi-Dismantling Machine

1  Bonnet and side chassis frame removed.

2  Lights removed, and separated from harness

using forked pointed tooth.

3  Radiator removed.

4  Harnesses pulled out from front of vehicle.

5  Wiper motor removed.

6  Bumper taken off.

7  Windshield cut round and taken out.

Steering wheel and dashboard panel removed.8 Steering wheel and panel separated using

forked pointed tooth.

9  Roof pulled off. Roof lining materials

separated from roof.

10 Seats taken out and harnesses under seatspulled out.

11 Door lining materials pulled off, and windowmechanisms in doors removed.

12 Car body turned upside down and secured inclamp arm.

13 Cover removed.

14 Muffler pulled out and catalytic converterremoved.

15 Member frame and suspension removed.

16 Oil drained and gas drawn off from shockabsorbers.

17 Main frame opened and engine removed.

18 Fuel tank and rear suspension removed.

Harnesses and electrical accessor-ies distributed round every corner ofthe vehicle body can be carefullyrecovered. Minimizing coppercontent in ferrous scrap, and thefullest recovery of high-value non-ferrous metals, which are requiredfor the complete re-use of end-of-life vehicles, raise quality indismantling. In the difficult task ofremoving harnesses, the SK135SRmakes complex and detailedseparating possible.

Dismantling of Complex Equipment

Engine Dismantling

Fast, efficient enginedismantlingProcesses have been simplified toseparating, cutting, and sorting, forgreater working capacity. Allprocesses can be completed by oneoperator working alone. Enginedismantling capacity with themachine has been shown to beabout 10 times that of manualdismantling. (KOBELCO tests)

Higher quality aluminumingotsThe carburetor, which containszinc, is easily removed, andelectrical parts such as the startermotor and dynamo are easilydetached, resulting in aluminumingots of higher purity.

Can dismantle discardeddomestic appliances etc

Saves labor in separatingout materials in complexequipmentAlmost all items for dismantling area mix of many different materials, including steel and aluminum,

plastics such as FRP and urethane, glass, plywood, textiles and leather. The intricate work of taking theseitems apart is accomplished withprecision.
