MGMA formed in 1995 to support the manufacturers of traditional and fabricated metal gutter systems in both the historic and modern construction sectors

Sectors include - Heritage, Refurbishment, Domestic, Non-domestic and New build

Changes in Construction

The industry has changed since 1990 as systems and products have become more sophisticated and complex

Architects, engineers, specifiers, installers and building owners all need guidance on the technical attributes of products and systems plus information about their installation and operational use

Contracted research programme with Oxford Brookes University’s architectural and engineering department to investigate the expansion, restrain and sealing of aluminium fabrications when subjected to environmental thermal changes.

Focus

• To determine the expansion rate and forces generated in aluminium fabrications

• Guidance on “fully fixed” or “floating” restraint

• Investigate the “backing out” or tearing of fasteners

• Effective sealing of joints and junctions

A personal (controversial) observation

• We have too many standards

• In many cases Normative references are out of synchronisation with the primary standard

• European standards do not truly reflect National practice

• Industry is spending too much time, effort and incurred cost drafting standards

• Standards promote the lowest possible acceptable level not the “good practice” they once did

• Technical issues are being driven by commercial aspirations

Construction Markets has produced an annual assessment of the profiled metal market for the MCRMA since 1992. The methodology has remained consistent during this period which is essential in order to provide directly comparable year on year data.

Summary and Conclusion

History of cladding

First patent relating to corrugated iron was granted to Henry R Palmer of the London Docks Company, in 1829.

The mode of forming sheets was well known but the claim for originality was for its application to roofs and walls.

Facts

The profiled metal roof and wall industry has developed dramatically and without the involvement of Associations across Europe the industry may not have developed to the stage that its at now.
