Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,

For more than a thousand years, pilgrims have walked the Way of St. James, seeking penance, enlightenment, and adventure. Wherever their journey began, their destination was the shrine of the apostle in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where it is believed that the remains of St. James (Santiago) the Greater—patron saint of the country—are buried.

I invite you to join me next autumn on a Met Adventures program that includes a few opportunities to hike along scenic sections of the Vía de la Plata—the longest of the pilgrimage routes in Spain. Together we will follow in the pilgrims’ footsteps along this lesser-known portion of Europe’s most famous walking pilgrimage, beginning in the Andalusian capital of Seville. Having led a previous Travel with The Met program along the better-known Northern route of the Camino Francés, I look forward to exploring the Western side of my homeland with you on this tour.

From Seville, we will travel the route through the historic cities of Mérida, Plasencia, and León, among others. Breathtaking architecture beckons, from classical Roman ruins to medieval Moorish baths to a modern masterpiece designed by Rafael Moneo. Other surprises await: we will go inside the 16th-century palace of the last Aztec empress, not usually open to the public; view an exquisite altarpiece by Francisco de Zurbarán, the “Spanish Caravaggio” of the Golden Age of painting in Spain; stroll the streets of the former Jewish quarters of Seville and Cáceres; and sample Iberian acorn-fed ham at a special tasting in the countryside outside Salamanca. Our journey concludes with a special Pilgrim Mass at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, where the traditional incense-burning ceremony will be performed especially for our group. Along the way, we will stay in traditional paradores, many of them splendidly restored convents from centuries gone by.

I hope you will join me on this remarkable journey.

Sincerely, Inés PowellLecturer and Art HistorianThe Metropolitan Museum of Art

Advice for walking the Camino de Santiago

Participants must be in good health and able to keep pace with an active group. They must be able to hike for up to five miles a day on uneven terrain; walk and stand for periods of two hours at time; climb stairs at monuments (some without handrails) and other locations not handicapped accessible; and board a motorcoach unassisted. Any condition that may require assistance or special medical attention must be reported at the time of your reservation. For walks on the Camino, participants are advised to bring “broken-in” walking shoes or boots, a sun hat, and comfortable hiking attire.
