INTRODUCTION

LEADER: The Passover, or Pesach, in Hebrew means “to spare by hesitating over.” Pesach also means “the festival” or the “slaughtered lamb.” The slaughtered lamb is a spiritual picture of Yahshua, “the lamb led to the slaughter” (Isaiah 53:7) and “the Lamb of Elohim who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) and “He spares the poor and needy and He saves their lives.” (Psalm 72:13)

We recognize that Yahshua our Messiah, the Promised Son of Yahweh, was sent as the Lamb of Yahweh in fulfillment of the Passover sacrifice (Matthew 16:21) and in fulfillment of the promise to Abraham that Yahweh Himself would provide a Lamb. (Beresheet 22:8)

Passover is a remembrance of Yahweh’s deliverance of His people from the bondage of slavery in Mitsrayim and how Yahweh revealed His Name to the world through that process. He commanded us to observe this festival every year with those who are in Covenant with Yahweh – Yisrael, His people.

This service is a teaching, a memorial and a rehearsal - all placed within the context of a meal. A meal which was originally commanded to be eaten “in haste” was specific for the event of Passover. We are observing Passover as a remembrance so we are not required to eat the meal in haste. We will be celebrating with seven (7) cups of wine (or seven (7) sips from the same cup), based upon the Patterns in the Torah.

Tonight we celebrate the Passover, remembering that Yahweh is the Elohim Who makes Covenants with His people and He always keeps His Word. With that expectation we celebrate this Passover in obedience to Our Creator with a heartfelt desire to receive ALL that He has promised us.

Through the shed blood of the Lamb of the Elohim of Yisrael, our Messiah Yahshua, we have passed over from death to life, released from the bondage of sin.

READER: Yahweh spoke to Mosheh saying “These are the Appointed Times of Yahweh, set-apart gatherings (qadosh mikra) which you are to proclaim at their appointed times. In the first new moon, on the fourteenth day of the new moon, between the evenings is the Pesach to Yahweh.” (Vayiqra 23:1,4,5)

READER: “This is the law of the Pesach: No son of a stranger is to eat of it, but any servant a man has bought for silver, when you have circumcised him, then let him eat of it. A sojourner and a hired servant does not eat of it…

Sceptre of Life Ministries … SceptreofLife.org

Note: In the Hebrew text the phrase “between the evenings” is as follows: “bane” !yb meaning: “between” and “ha’arba’im” ~ybr[h meaning: “the evenings”

Therefore ~ybr[h !yb “bane ha’arba’im” is translated into English as: “between the evenings” which defines when a day starts and ends. So, the 14th day is when the Pesach (lamb) is slaughtered.

Page 3: Messianic Passover Haggadah · 2 INTRODUCTION LEADER: The Passover, or Pesach, in Hebrew means “to spare by hesitating over.” Pesach also means “the festival” or the “slaughtered

READER: And when a stranger sojourns with you and shall perform the Pesach to Yahweh, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and perform it, and he shall be as a native of the land. But let no uncircumcised eat of it. There is one Torah for the native-born and for the stranger who sojourns among you.” (Shemot 12:43-45,48-49)

LEADER: We know that circumcision was the sign of the Covenant and circumcision goes beyond the flesh and is fulfilled by the circumcision of the heart. (Devarim 10:16; 30:6; Yirmeyahu 4:4) All those who partake of this meal must be in Covenant with Yahweh and be circumcised.

THE BLESSING AND THE LIGHTS

LEADER: Light is a symbol of Elohim’s presence. We know that the seven branch Menorah was always to be kept burning in the House of Yahweh, and so we will light our Menorah to commemorate that Elohim meets with us at His Appointed Times.

It is written in the Scriptures that the offspring of a woman (Yahshua) will crush the serpent’s head. “And I will put enmity between you (satan) and the woman (Yisrael), and between your (satan’s) seed (pagans) and her (Yisrael’s) Seed (Messiah). He (Yahshua) shall crush your (satan’s) head and you (satan) shall crush His (Yahshua’s) heel.” (The Cross) (Beresheet 3:15)

Just as Yahshua, the light of the world was brought into the world through a woman, the Passover meal traditionally begins with a woman kindling lights, which sets apart this evening as a celebration before Yahweh.

READER: Again therefore Yahshua spoke to them saying “I AM the Light of the World: he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.” (John 8:12)

(Woman kindles lights and recites the blessing)

WOMAN: Blessed are You Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who has sanctified us by your Word and has given us Yahshua the Messiah, the Light of the World and it is in His Name (authority) we kindle the Passover lights.

WOMAN: Blessed are You Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe, Who has kept us in life and has preserved us, and has enabled us to reach this season.

(All recite the blessing below)

ALL: Blessed are You Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who has performed miracles for our ancestors, in those days, in this season.

KIDDUSH

LEADER: Tonight we drink seven (7) cups or sips of wine. Each of these cups reminds us of one of the seven promises or “I shall” made by Yahweh to Mosheh. (Hebrews 10:23)

READER: 6 “Say, therefore, to the children of Yisrael, ‘I am Yahweh’, and I shall bring you out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites, and I shall deliver you from their enslaving, and I shall redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments, 7 And I shall take you as My people, and I shall be your Elohim. And you shall know that ‘I am Yahweh’ your Elohim who is bringing you out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites. 8 And I shall bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, to Yitshaq, and to Ya’acov, and I shall give it to you as an inheritance. ‘I am Yahweh.’” (Shemot 6:6-8)

LEADER: It is important to note that “I am Yahweh” is mentioned three (3) times in (Shemot 6:6-8). This is a spiritual picture of Yahshua as our Pesach slaughtered on the cross (stake), Who was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, rising victoriously the third day, giving us life. This is why Yahshua can make these seven (7) I shall passover and tribulation promises of life to us. As we continue we will see how important the Name of Yahweh is to the Passover and the Exodus. In fact, the reason that Yisrael experienced the difficulties with Mitsrayim was so that the Name of Yahweh could be revealed and esteemed before the world. (2 Samuel 7:23; 1 Chronicles 17:21; Jeremiah 10:6)

These seven “I shall” statements reveal the Covenant path established by Yahweh for His Covenant people to follow.

The seven promises of Yahweh reveal the journey of faith that we all must take as we travel from slavery (bondage to sin) to our inheritance (life in Yahshua). This journey was revealed through the life of a man named Abram, who received a promise from Yahweh. Abram believed Yahweh and traveled from Ur, which was in Babylon, to the land of Kenanan where he called on the Name of Yahweh.

During a time of famine, he left the land of Kenanan and traveled to Mitsrayim where his bride was taken captive by Pharaoh. Because Pharaoh had taken Abram’s bride captive he was plagued with great plagues. Because of these plagues Pharaoh released the bride of Abram. Abram then departed Mitsrayim with great wealth. (Beresheet 12) He also came out of Mitsrayim with Hagar. Her name actually means Ha Ger - The Stranger. This was a pattern for a future prophetic event.

It was only after these events that we read about Abram entering into Covenant with Yahweh. During the Covenant process he was told that his seed would be strangers in a land not their own, and they would serve the people of that land, and be afflicted by them. He was also told that the nation that afflicted his seed would be judged and his seed would come out with great substance. Those words came to pass.

The seed that passed from Abraham, through Yitshaq and Yisrael would later return to Mitsrayim. They became slaves and were afflicted until the chosen time of deliverance arrived. That is where our story begins.

The First Cup THE CUP OF DELIVERANCE

READER: “Therefore tell the children of Yisrael, ‘I am Yahweh’, and I shall bring you out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites….” (Shemot 6:6)

LEADER: The first cup, the Cup of Deliverance. Through this first cup we remember the promise that Yahweh would bring Yisrael out from under the burdens of the Mitsrites. A burden is a yoke which is a control device. It is an instrument that typically restrains two animals together so that they can be used for work. The Mitsrites controlled and oppressed the Yisraelites before Mosheh came to deliver them. After Mosheh came Pharoah treated them even harsher. Therefore by this cup we remember the first “I shall” spoken by Yahweh: “I shall bring you out from under the yoke of the Mitsrites.”

ALL: (lift cup and recite the blessing) Baruch ata Yahweh Elohenu Melech Ha-Olam Borey P’ree Hagafen. Blessed are you Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who creates the fruit of the vine. Blessed are you Yahweh our Elohim Who delivers His people from oppression. (All Drink)

BREAK THE MIDDLE MATZAH

LEADER: There is a very old tradition with much mystery involving a particular piece of matzah during the Passover “Seder.” (“Seder” means order) Thousands of years ago the Sages instructed the Yisraelites to take three (3) matzot which are called “Echad”, break the middle one, which is called the Afikoman, and wrap it in a special linen. The tradition surrounding the Afikoman is not a commandment. It is actually a Greek word, which literally means, “I came” indicating past tense or that it already happened. (Revelation 13:8) It is a tradition that points to the first coming of Messiah Yahshua who became the Passover Lamb, who was broken for us, delivering us from spiritual death to spiritual life. He will come a second time as the Lion of the tribe of Yahudah to deliver us, His bride, to everlasting life at the end of Ya’acov’s trouble. (The tribulation) (Break & Wrap Afikoman)

LEADER: (Holds up the “Echad” Matzah) These are the three (3) matzot called “Echad.” This middle Afikoman, wrapped in linen, broken, pierced, bruised and striped and is a clear picture of our Messiah Yahshua who took this same affliction, and more, that was meant for us. (John 6:47-58)

READER: “And He was pierced for our transgressions, bruised for our iniquities, the chastisement of our peace was upon Him and by His stripes we are healed.” (Yeshayahu 53:5) LEADER: (Holds up broken middle Afikoman wrapped in linen.) This is the bread of affliction, which our forefathers ate in Mitsrayim.

READER: “Eat no leavened bread with it (the lamb). For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, the bread of affliction, because you came out of the land of Mitsrayim in haste - so that you may remember all the days of your life the day when you came out of the land of Mitsrayim.” (Devarim 16:3)

7

LEADER: This Afikoman which is wrapped in a clean linen cloth is now placed separate from the Passover table. We will now place a pillow over the Afikoman. This is a picture of Yahshua, the Bread of Life, Who was wrapped in a linen cloth, laid in a new tomb with a stone covering the entrance.

READER: When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a talmid of Yahshua. This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Yahshua. Then Pilate ordered it be given to him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.” (Matthew 27:57-60)

MAGGID (THE PASSOVER STORY)

LEADER: Thousands of years ago 70 people in the household of the man named Yisrael moved to Mitsrayim at the invitation of Pharaoh, whom Joseph served under. Over time, new Pharoahs arose who forgot Joseph and saw the Yisraelites as a threat.

Centuries later they found themselves under the yoke of Mitsrayim and enslaved to cruel taskmasters. They were afflicted and in bondage. This is why to this day the Hebrew word for Egypt – “Mitsrayim” is likened to “Bondage” or “Misery.” At the chosen time Yahweh remembered His promise to Abram and sent the Yisraelites one who would deliver them from their bondage. Yahweh chose Mosheh to deliver the people and gave him instructions and authority to accomplish the task.

READER: 1 “And Yahweh spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon in the land of Mitsrayim, saying, 2 This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you, it is the first new moon of the year for you. 3 Speak to all the congregation of Yisrael, saying, On the tenth day of this new moon each one of them is to take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of beings, according to each man’s need you make your count for the lamb. 5 Let the lamb be a perfect one, a year old male. Take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same new moon. Then all the assembly of the congregation of Yisrael shall slay it between the evenings. 7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two door posts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.” (Shemot 12:1-7)

READER: 8 “And they shall eat the flesh on that night, roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. 9 Do not eat it raw, nor boiled at all with water, but roasted in fire, its head with its legs and its inward parts. 10 And do not leave of it until morning, and what remains of it until morning you are to burn with fire. 11 And this is how you eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the Pesach of Yahweh. 12 And I shall pass through the land of Mitsrayim on that night, and shall strike all the first-born in the land of Mitsrayim, both man and beast. And on all the mighty ones of Mitsrayim I shall execute judgment. I am Yahweh. 13 And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I shall pass over you, and let the plague not come on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Mitsrayim. 14 And this day shall become to you a remembrance. And you shall celebrate it as a festival to Yahweh throughout your generations - celebrate it as a festival, an everlasting law. 15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. Indeed on the first day you cause leaven to cease from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that being shall be cut off from Yisrael.” (Shemot 12:8-15)

LEADER: Tonight we celebrate the Passover Feast to remember what Yahweh did for our ancestors so long ago. We also have the privilege of remembering how He sent His salvation – Yahshua – to set us free from the power of sin and death.

We are here to remember what Yahweh did for His people then and now, and we also anxiously await the final deliverance of His Covenant people which will occur on a night such as this.

Sceptre of Life Ministries … SceptreofLife.org

Note: The phrase: “on that night” refers to the evening at the end of the 14th day and the beginning of the 15th day. Therefore, the Pesach lamb, unleavened bread and bitter herbs are eaten on the beginning of the 15th day which starts in the evening.

The Second Cup THE CUP OF FREEDOM

READER: 1 “Then Yahweh said to Mosheh, See, I have made you an elohim to Pharaoh, and your brother Aharon will be your prophet. 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aharon is to tell Pharaoh to let the Yisraelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and though I multiply my miraculous signs and wonders in Mitsrayim, 4 He will not listen to you. Then I will lay My Hand on Mitsrayim and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out My divisions, My people the Yisraelites. 5 And the Mitsrites will know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out My Hand against Mitsrayim and bring the Yisraelites out of it.” (Shemot 7:1-5)

LEADER: Therefore by this cup we remember the second “I shall” spoken by Yahweh, “I shall free you from being slaves.”

ALL: (lift cup and recite the blessing)Baruch ata Yahweh Elohenu Melech Ha-Olam Borey P’ree Hagafen. Blessed are you Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who creates the fruit of the vine. Blessed are you Yahweh Elohim Who frees us from being slaves. (All Drink)

BLESSING OVER MATZA

READER: 7 “Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Messiah, our Passover, was sacrificed for us. 8 Therefore let us keep the Feast, not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.” (1 Corinthians 5:7-8)

10

LEADER: The Matzah of Passover is not just a restriction on our diet and it is not simply about food. There are profound lessons that we can learn as we practice ridding leaven from our homes and bodies; so too, we should focus on ridding sin from our homes and from our lives. The eating of matzah is also a fulfillment of a commandment - Now we will bless Yahweh for the Matzah.

ALL: Baruch ata Yahweh Elohenu Melech Ha-Olam Ha-Motzee Matzah meen Ha-Eretz. Blessed are you Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who brings forth unleavened bread from the earth. (Do not eat matzah yet)

MAROR (BITTER HERBS)

LEADER: As with the matzah we are also specifically commanded to eat bitter herbs, known as maror. (Sh’mot 12:8) The maror symbolizes the bitterness of life under the Mitsrayim taskmasters and the bitterness of slavery.

READER: “The Mitsrites compelled the sons of Yisrael to labor rigorously; and they made their lives bitter with hard labor in mortar and bricks and at all kinds of labor in the fields, all their labors which they rigorously imposed upon them.” (Shemot 1:13-14)

ALL: Blessed are You, Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe, Who made us set apart with His commands and commanded us to eat the bitter herbs. (You may now eat bitter herbs

ALL EAT A PIECE OF MATZAH WITH MAROR

NOTE: Tradition includes a food called Charoset which symbolizes the mortar of affliction. (You may now eat the matzah with the charoset)

The Third Cup THE CUP OF REDEMPTION

LEADER: We must remember the great sacrifice at which redemption was purchased. As we recite each plague, let us dip our little finger into the cup, allowing a drop of wine to fall into our bowl.

ALL: Blood! Frogs! Gnats! Flies! Disease to Livestock! Boils! Thunder and Hail! Locusts! Darkness! Death of the Firstborn! (Do not drink from cup yet)

LEADER: The Yisraelites were saved by Yahweh and none other. (Acts 4:10-12) For it is written: “On that same night I will pass through Mitsrayim and strike down every firstborn – both men and animals – and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Mitsrayim. I am Yahweh!” (Shemot 12:12)

LEADER: All of the plagues were a direct affront to the gods of Mitsrayim and it was Yahweh Himself Who rendered judgment. Therefore by this cup we remember the third “I shall” spoken by Yahweh “I shall redeem you with an outstretched Arm and with mighty acts of judgment.”

ALL: (lift cup and recite blessing) Baruch ata Yahweh Elohenu Melech Ha-Olam Borey P’ree Hagafen. Blessed are you Yahweh our Elohim, King of the Universe Who creates the fruit of the vine. Everyone returns to finish the Haggadah reading…

EAT THE AFIKOMAN

LEADER: (Lifting the Afikoman)This piece of unleavened bread, which was broken, wrapped, buried and is now brought forth represents the body of Messiah. This is a clear picture of the beaten, dead, buried and resurrected Messiah.

We see the Messiah all throughout the Passover. He is the Lamb of Elohim and as the lamb’s blood protected the Yisraelites from death, Yahushua’s blood protects us from the second death.

Remember that while Mosheh led the Yisraelites out of Mitsrayim at Passover, it was by no coincidence that Yahoshua (Joshua), his assistant, was the one who led the Children of Yisrael across the Jordan into their first celebration of Pesach in the Promised Land. (Joshua 5:10)

Likewise, it is Yahshua the Messiah Who, someday soon will lead us into the Land as our Shepherd.

LEADER: We will now eat the broken Afikoman, a spiritual picture of our redemption, Yahshua our Messiah, the Bread of Life Who was broken for each one of us. (Distribute Afikoman)

ALL: Blessed are you O Yahweh our Eloheynu, King of the Universe, Who brings forth from the heavens, Yahshua, our Bread of Life. (Eat Afikoman)

ALL: “Praise Yahweh, all you nations! Extol Him, all you peoples! For His loving commitment is mighty over us, and the truth of Yahweh is everlasting. Praise Yah!” (Psalm 117)

Therefore by this cup we remember the fifth “I shall” spoken by Yahweh: “I shall be your Elohim then you will know that I am Yahweh your Elohim, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Mitsrites.” By this cup we celebrate the enduring love of Yahweh and we give praise to Yahweh our Elohim.

LEADER: This was not a New Covenant, it was the Renewed Covenant described by the Prophet Yirmeyahu. (Jeremiah 31:31-34) Yahushua was revealing Himself as the Lamb of Elohim whose blood would be shed to Renew the Covenant between Yahweh and Yisrael.

LEADER: By this cup we remember the sixth "I shall" that Yahweh shall bring us to the Land that He swore with uplifted Hand to Abraham, to Yitshaq and to Yaakov.

Nirtzah CONCLUSION

LEADER: We have now finished our Passover Seder. We have seen through the Seven cups – The seven “I shalls” which outline the plan of restoration implemented by Yahweh.

We have entered the Feast of seven days - the seven days of the Feast of Unleavened Bread that starts with the Passover meal.

We will also start a series of counting seven sevens as we count the Omer to Shavuot.

We should be celebrating with the hope that we will be able to participate in this greater and final Exodus when Messiah returns and brings us into our inheritance.

When that occurs we will see the realization of the long standing prayer at the end of every Passover Seder…

All proclaim together!

NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM!
