THE CHRISTMAS SALE for Kids Against Hunger Greater Burlington was a great success due to all of you who donated the wonderful Christmas items, gift items, toys and delicious baked goods. Many thanks to all those who spent hours pricing and setting up the beautiful displays. The proceeds are over $1800, which will support nearly four packagings for groups that can’t afford to financially support it themselves. If you are interested in helping at the Kids Against Hunger Greater Burlington gift wrap at the mall this year, please pick up a schedule in the narthex. We have a new leader whom you can call or email to schedule a time you wish to volunteer, or you can sign up at the gift wrap when they are open.

From the Pastor’s Desk Here’s what I’m praying for this Advent, for all of us. I pray for us to be with eachother. I pray for worship that is
‘time out’ from other commitments and worries, time out from over-thinking who is going to show up at the next
family gathering, and time out from wondering where you will be on Christmas Day. Be with your church family
all of Advent, and on Christmas Eve, and tell the church office if you need a ride to church on Christmas Eve, after
dark. I pray for weather that encourages us to get to church on Sunday mornings. Of course pastors pray for the
weather! Pastors devote whole Saturday nights in the winter to the Weather Channel! We load bags of cat litter
into the trunks of our cars, and figure that if we can get to church, most everyone else can too. God bless Don
Duke, whose oversight of our building repairs saved us enough to add the drop-off. Messiah’s covered drop-off
was built to encourage us to show up at worship in inclement weather.
I pray that our expectations for the Christmas season don’t make us unhappy. Most of us can identify a best
Christmas and a worst Christmas ever. I pray we don’t compare this year to any other, but determine just to let it
be as it is, and do our best to share ourselves with eachother. And with God. And the angels, who both announce
Jesus’ birth, and keep us company when we are alone or down.
And I pray for Advent Sundays at Messiah that please and feed our souls. Our Sunday School shares their Nativity
play at the late service, December 14. Anticipate angels in baseball caps and a mystery character named Sabrina in
the Christmas play this year. Jesus may be one Benz twin, or the other one. And we can anticipate lovely music
from our growing senior choir at their Christmas cantata at the late service, December 21.
Midweek, this Advent, we return to Faith Lutheran on Wednesday evenings at 7pm to sing Holden Evening Pray-
er, contemplative and sweet. We join Mary’s song: “My soul magnifies the Lord, who has done good things for
me”. December’s 3rd Wednesday supper won’t be at Messiah this year: on Wednesday, December 17, you are
invited for a light supper at the parsonage, 2730 Lochmoor, a block up Irish Ridge, before midweek worship at
Faith. And then it will be Christmas Eve. Praise God, like the angels and shepherds do! Randy reminds me that
Christmas doesn’t end on Christmas Day, but goes on for another 12 days. Nice. We may have another sweet
surprise the Sunday after Christmas.

Messiah Preschool News Greetings from the Children’s Wing of the church. Ring,
Ring, Ring the Bells, Christmas Time is Near!!! Soon we will see shimmering paints, glitter, ribbons, and beads on the projects and perhaps in the air down in our rooms. Secret presents for mommy and daddy are putting big smiles on our children’s faces. The children are learning about sharing in all the things that they do during preschool
time with each other and how important it is to be nice to one another! The Golden Rule!!! Being a good citizen of the community and learning how to be an active one is never too early to learn. With that said we must get busy and make some Christmas fun… Tis the season of Magic and Joy! Be sure to watch for your share of the Magic and Joy of the season! We wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a big Happy New Year!! Registration is underway for the 2014 – 2015. If you need a registration form, please call Ms. Margie (our Director) at 754-7591 ext. 2.
God’s Precious Children
God’s Precious Children - update 10/28/14
Dear friends in mission, In Luke 7:24 Jesus was talking to a crowd about John the Baptist, saying “Was he a weak reed swayed by every breath of wind?” Satan places many gusts of wind in our lives wishing to blow us off course even breaking some succumbing to the pressure. The winds of death are still blowing in Liberia as health workers struggle to contain the spread of Ebola. In August the Liberian government declared a 90 day state of emergency, quarantining some areas and restricting transportation to reduce the movement of people. Primary, secondary and college level enrollment are also on hold in an effort to limit the spread of Ebola. I have heard January is the projected peak of the Ebola outbreak. Yes, it is still on the increase. If that be the case, the 90 day hold on school enrollment would be extended. God’s Precious Children is holding the tuition money for the 2014/2015 school year safely in our account here in the USA till we receive assurance when schools will open. After evaluating conditions, Deb and I decided not to travel to Liberia in January 2015. We will look at things as they develop planning our next trip. Patrick Jackson, GPC’s coordinator in Liberia, keeps me up to date on local developments in Liberia. Patrick warned me that on our next trip to Liberia we will be greeted by a large number of Ebola orphans looking for help to go to school. And I thought the need was great before. A number of concerned sponsors have asked if their student is OK. I know that the main area of Bong County, where most of our students come from, has not been hit as hard as some other areas. I do not know of any of our students that have been infected with the Ebola virus. We pray it stays that way. In one of Patrick’s communications to me he equated Liberia’s civil war to the Ebola outbreak. Patrick said we went through 14 years of war in Liberia and if that wasn’t bad enough now this Ebola comes. Patrick informed me that many parents are coming to him asking if GPC’s tuition sponsorship program will still help their children go to school or did Ebola stop them? The parents were overjoyed to hear we have not abandoned them. What an awesome way to illustrate the unfailing love of Jesus Christ to our brothers and sisters in Liberia. There is such a great need for the work of God’s Precious Children to continue. Thank you for your help being the hands of Jesus! Please continue to pray for the people of Liberia and the elimination of this Ebola virus.
In His service Deb & Gary

FROM THE ORGAN BENCH Slipping down the back staircase at Christmas…
When my parents were first married they lived in the “maid’s quarters” of a large, old home on the end of North Street. That house was my first home and I remember it well. One of the things I remember best is that it had two staircases. The first, in the front of the house, was open and large and sweeping and dis-played the gracious grandness of the home. But there was also a second interior staircase, narrow and steep, located in the back of the house. It led from my parent’s apartment (the maid’s quarters) to the kitchen. The household help used the back staircase to quietly slip down to the kitchen from their living quarters to prepare meals and the like. I remember that staircase best because it was how I managed to slip downstairs when my mother wasn’t looking to have breakfast with Aunt Grace. Perhaps you’ve seen houses like that one. Many of us think of Christmas like the front staircase. God came in like the wealthy owner of the house, with great pomp to a weary world, accompanied by the singing of angels. I would submit to you that the opposite is more true. God really slipped down the back staircase at Christmas. One of the greatest mysteries for us as Christians is that of the Incarnation, of God’s “enfleshment.” God laid aside the entire splendor of the Eternal Majesty who created all the worlds and everything that is, to slip down the back staircase of our human existence and take on human flesh. God acted like the servant of the house and not the owner of the house. In doing so, in taking on our human flesh, in becoming incar-nate the cycle was begun that would lead to the death and resurrection of Jesus which would ensure our adoption as God’s adopted sons and daughters. We have, at Christmas, the opportunity to see God’s action as some kind of sweet story told by Luke and framed on a Hallmark card, or we can see more deeply the great mystery that John unfolds in the first chap-ter of his gospel. Take time before your celebration of the great feast of Christmas to reread and recapture the mystery of the Incarnation, and to appreciate God’s slipping down the back staircase into our lives. Warmly, Randy+
