We are a body
of
believers
united in
Christ to
proclaim,
live, and love
according to
God’s Word.
I used to play ice hockey
as a kid. I know what
you are thinking, “Where
is there ice in Maryland?”
Thank God for indoor
rinks! I grew up idolizing
players like Mark Messier
and Mario Lemieux. Often, we kids
would debate: Who is the best hockey
player? It always came down to one
person, Wayne Gretzy – “The Great One”.
Not only was he a class act, but he is the
only player to have over 200 points in
NHL history.
Wayne Gretzy once said something that
always made hockey sense, but I’ve
realized that it also makes church sense:
“I skate to where the puck is going to
be, not where it has been.”
So true. Our vision process is about
positioning ourselves into the future.
Not that the past is unimportant, but that
the future is where we need to look,
planning and motivating our resources
for the future.
We are growing. Not only numerically,
but spiritually. Our vision is starting to
grow. We are talking about expanding
our food pantry, asking how we can
better help our community, considering
team structured ministry, after school
programs, new youth ministry, and more.
As we begin to move towards the future,
we are growing into our vision. We are
considering many ideas.
One of the ways in which you can help us
grow into our vision and vision statement
is by attending one of our Home Vision
Gatherings occurring in February. During
these gatherings we will:
• Ask what you have learned,
experienced, or heard during our 30
Days of Prayer
• Consider team organized ministry
• Discuss vision statement phases
Anyone can sign up to attend a Home
Vision Gathering. We will have these
discussions around dessert. Please sign
up in the church Gathering Area or
contact one of the hosts on the next
page.
In addition, we are continuing to grow in
our spirituality, in which we focus on the
future by a process of prayer, fasting, and
discernment. February 10-12 will engage
us in “Spark: A Weekend of Spiritual
Discernment”. This weekend will include
a prayer vigil, fasting, and a church lunch.
Please read more about the details on
the next page.

Thank you to everyone who continues to
contribute toward the future of this church. The
congregation continues to amaze me with how
faithful you are to our vision process. Our
vision gatherings and prayer journey will help
grow our vision. Vision is more than buildings,
parking lots, or churches. Vision is about what
God is calling us to do and minister to.
So, let us keep our eyes on where the puck… er,
the vision is moving. Let us be a people who skate
toward the goal and to the victory of
connecting people to the life, death, and
resurrection of Jesus Christ.
With all Love and Grace,
Rev. Alan Rudnick

SESSION III ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
February 5 – April 15, 2012
Peter: Fisherman and Shepherd of the Church: Are
you a Christian who desires to have a transforming
experience with the inspired Word of God? Then
join us for this study on Peter and travel through
the Apostle’s life from his calling to his work after
the resurrection. The life of Peter is one of the
most fascinating and inspiring in the Bible. He was
an ordinary Jewish fisherman, but through his
experiences with Jesus, he became one of the key
figures in the history of the world. Learn how the
journey through Peter’s story can enrich your own
life and how his life of contradictions can teach
the young and old about discipleship. There will be
an optional book to purchase.
Led by Terry van den Heever
(Downstairs in CMNS Lounge)
Before Abraham: Creation, Sin, and the Nature of
God: Where did we come from? Why is there pain
and suffering? Who committed the first murder?
Why are there so many languages in the world?
The first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis
have the answers to these questions and more,
providing us with the history of the human race in
its earliest years, prior to the time of Abraham.
This John MacArthur study takes an in-depth look
at the creation story, continuing through Noah
and the Flood, and concluding with the Tower of
Babel and the dispersion of the nations. These
studies include close-ups of Adam and Eve, Cain
and Abel, and Noah. Study guide book available.
Led by Robert Staulters (Fellowship Area)
Revelation Study: Is the end of the world going to
happen soon? Does Revelation tell of the world’s
destruction? How are we as Christians supposed
to understand the book of Revelation? This study
will walk through the book of Revelation in a
relevant and practical way. Also, this study will
dispel myths, open new doors, and enlighten
every Christian. Uncovering the meaning and
context of this book will help participants to grow
in their faith and understanding of this prophetic
book.
Led by Kevin Livingston (Upstairs second floor)
Please sign up in the gathering area.

BOARD OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Our first and second Sunday school session are
now complete and everyone enjoyed their classes.
Thank you so much to the wonderful Sunday
school teachers who have provided their guidance
and leadership through Christ to all of us. Our third
session will start on February 5th
. Classes being
offered are listed on the left, or you can see Sarah
Watkins or myself for more information. Make
sure you sign up for a class and bring a friend or
two! We look forward to the fellowship.
Joy Hanchett has graciously accepted the position
of leading our Children’s Worship. Please keep her
in prayer as she plans and prepares to lead our
children. Mary Morelock has been working hard in
the library to update the computers and books.
Stop by, say hi, and check out a book. Barb Roll has
been doing an amazing job with Baby Box and our
additional childcare for various activities. Our
childcare needs have greatly increased. If you are
interested in helping on Sunday mornings, please
see Barb Roll.
The Board of Christian Education is still looking for
new members. If God is leading you in a new
direction and you are interested, please call me or
Pastor Alan for more information.
Finally but not least, I would like to extend a HUGE
thank you to Kristen Champion-Terrell for her
amazing leadership as the Chair of the Board of
Christian Education and as our Sunday School
Director. She and Wes and the children will be
greatly missed when they move.

YOUTH NEWS
This past Martin Luther King Jr.
weekend, our youth went on
the 2012 Excel Youth For Christ
Conference. We had a group of 9 participants, with
6 youth and 3 adults. Pastor Alan Rudnick, Dottie
Sellers, and Lesa Krogh chaperoned. Through
general sessions and small group breakouts, youth
learned about “Going Deeper” with their
relationship with Christ. In addition, we spent
some time with the youth of First Presbyterian
Church of Ballston Spa, led by Pastor David
Bennett. Our youth experienced a great time of
fellowship, fun, and faith. Thank you to Dottie and
Lesa for sharing their weekend.
If you are interested in youth ministry, we are
currently in search of a youth director/minister.
Please contact Pastor Alan Rudnick if you are
interested or know of someone who might be
interested.

THE 11:11 SERVICE
WEDNESDAY PRAYER & COMMUNION SERVICE
Each Wednesday at 11:11 a.m. we
will gather for prayer, song, and
communion. Each brief service
(about 30 minutes) will utilize the
worship style of Taize, which
enables the worshipper to
experience God through the
simplicity of focused prayer and song. You will not
want to miss this intimate opportunity to grow
through the spiritual discipline of communal
prayer. After the service, we invite everyone to
the Ballston Spa Lenten Lunch at the First
Presbyterian Church.
THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Our roofing repair has been completed!
Our roofer has given us a quote of
$3,300 to restore the Mevic’s side of
the roof. We will see where the Lord
leads us. Going into February the elevator will
need maintenance.

ASH WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 22, 2012
The first day of Lent is marked with a special
worship service. On Ash Wednesday, starting at
7:00 p.m. in the sanctuary, there will be a service
to commemorate this day. The goal of the day is
to reflect upon our humanness, our need for
forgiveness, and our connection to Christ’s last
days. These themes are symbolized by the
imposition of ashes on the forehead, with the
words, “You are dust and to dust you shall
return…” during the worship service. In the Old
Testament, ashes were a sign of penitence and
mourning. Job was known for placing ashes upon
his head to mourn the loss of his family. We invite
you to come, see, and experience a powerful time
of worship, song, light, darkness, and exploring the
spiritual life. In addition, we will take a special
offering to support the Ballston
Area Clergy Fund to assist needy
families in our community. First
Presbyterian Church and the
Alliance Church will join our Ash
Wednesday service.
ECUMENICAL LENTEN LUNCHEON
Join us each Wednesday, starting February 29,
12:10-12:50 p.m. for lunch and a devotional time
with local Ballston Spa churches at the First
Presbyterian Church. A brief
devotional time will be led by
a different Ballston Spa pastor
each week. Look for more
information to come.
LENTEN BIBLE STUDY
Angels, Demons, & Satan:
Separating Myth from Fact
A Lenten Bible Study with Pastor Alan
So many myths
surround angels,
demons, and
Satan. Did an
all-loving God
really create
Satan and
demons? What
do angels do? Who is Satan? Can a demon really
possess a person? These questions will be
addressed as we trace the development of these
divine beings in scripture. Pastor Alan Rudnick’s
Bible study will start on Wednesday, February 29
@ 6:30 p.m.
February 29 – Angels: Origin and Identity
March 7 – Angels: What Do They Do?
March 14 – Demons: Origin & Identity
March 21 – Demons: Their Power
March 28 – Satan, The Accuser: Old Testament
April 4 – Satan, The Evil Tempter: New Testament
Please RSVP for Child care with the church office.

CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL
The children returned from
December break with excitement
and lots of energy. The Christmas
decorations have been put away,
and we are now surrounded with snowflakes,
mittens, penguins, and Eskimos. Pastor Alan told
stories about David and Goliath and Daniel in the
Lion’s Den during Chapel Time. The children are
also learning about how God provides for the
animals in
winter. Our
parents and
students were
very busy on
Penguin Day on
Friday, January
27. There were
10 stations with
fun activities
related to
winter and
penguins.
The office is busy accepting Registrations
for the 2012-2013 school year. Church
members still have time to register your
preschool age child. Registration is open
to the public February 1, but Church Mouse
families and FBC church members have first
preference.
Our Open House for prospective students is
scheduled for Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. -
12 noon.
February brings
more winter
weather and songs
about God’s love
for us. We will be
having Valentine’s
Day parties and
Friendship Day
parties. Some of
the children will
b e ma k in g
Valentines to share with the residents of
Maplewood Manor. We will learn about
President’s Day, Groundhog’s Day, and
about ways we take care of our bodies.
A dental hygienist will visit the Pre-K
and 4-year-old classes to discuss dental
health.
In between all of their activities, the teachers will
be working on evaluations of each child. Parents
are anxious to learn if their child is ready for
Kindergarten, or if they should be enrolled in our
Pre-K. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled
for Friday, March 16. The Church Mouse will not
have regular classes, but the staff will be
here providing childcare during
conferences. Our Winter break is
February 20-24.
We are working on different ways to advertise our
wonderful program. I am very excited about the
launch of our website. The address is
www.churchmousepreschool.com. Thank you
Colleen Pierre for doing an amazing job. You can
also LIKE us on Facebook. We will also
be attending 2 preschool fairs in the
area. We are thankful for these avenues
to share our school with the public. God
has blessed us with a wonderful school
and an outstanding staff, and we pray
many will take advantage of our school
in the coming school year. Please keep
us in your prayers.
