In this issue of the Miner Messenger, you will discover thewonderful things our alumni are doing, including travel, family, and work-related accomplishments. The Alumni of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School have created a legacy that now rests in the hearts of our current students. The many memories our alumni merely remember are now being experienced by the next generation of Bishop Manogue students.

Continuing the spirit of Bishop Manogue by participating in class reunions, the

Jim Williams Miner Golf Classic, BASH, and other important projects will show current students that we are forever a family and their involvement with the school does not end at graduation. There are several opportunities for alumni and friends to get together through events sponsored by our Alumni Office. Mark your calendars to get together and socialize at the Jim Williams Miner Golf Classic on September 21st, Alumni and Friends Reception and Tailgate on Homecoming Weekend, October 12th and 13th, and all of the other sporting events this fall. More information about all these events is included in this issue of the Miner Messenger.

As we prepare to embark on this new school year, we are encouraged by the successes we found last year and will continue to work to enhance the opportunities for our students every day.

Sometimes when the telephone rings, one getsa surprise. When the phone rang last February and Father Chuck Durante asked if I would consider serving as Interim President of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, it was one of those times. To make a long story brief, after meetings with Father Chuck, Bishop Calvo and the Bishop Manogue Board; then after discussions with my spouse and prayerful reflection with the Lord, I decided to answer the call. In Latin, the response would be “Fiat!” It is with some trepidation, yet with confidence in God’s providential assistance that I answered in the affirmative.

Thus it was that July 1st my official duties as Interim President commenced. I

consider it a high honor to serve the Bishop Manogue community. I am humbled to be here. As the Lord said to Moses, “This is holy ground.” This school is holy ground.

Having been a beneficiary of formal Catholic education for more than 21 years, I am a passionate believer in it. My own high school years were extremely formative ones for me. I continue to give thanks for that blessing and pray for the same grace-filled experience for every student here.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School has a noble and heralded tradition. We can be proud of our mission, our graduates, our student body, our faculty and staff, our supporters, our program, the education provided, and the facility itself.

In order to send our children here, families make choices and great sacrifices. Our teachers and staff also make sacrifices for the cause. Fortunately the Lord pays returns of one hundred fold on such investments.

Our budget has been established for this new fiscal year, tuition rate established, and class schedules determined. “Full steam ahead!” is the refrain as we navigate the year. We do need to eliminate the debt

on the building and related operating costs. The money paid annually for interest could be much better applied elsewhere, e.g. on tuition assistance, teacher’s salaries, operating expenses and depreciation costs. We would also like to grow our endowment. We are finalizing a financial plan to accomplish this, most likely involving a capital campaign. We will keep you informed.

We give thanks to Father Chuck for his yeoman contributions as President these past 6 months and Chaplain over the years. We welcome newly ordained Father Mark Hanifan as our new Chaplain. We appreciate the service of Tim Petersen in a time of transition these past 4 years.

The new school year approaches. We pray that it be Spirit-filled and successful in the ways that really matter. Peter said to Jesus at the Transfiguration, “Lord, it is good for us to be here.” Indeed, it is good for us to be here at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School.

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School, BMCHS, has offered a Catholic faith-and-values-based education to three generations. However, northern Nevada Catholic education dates back over 140 years. In 1864, ecclesiastical powerhouse Bishop Patrick Manogue and the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul founded a school for 300 children in the gold and silver boomtown of Virginia City. At the turn of the 20th century, as the mining industry waned, the Truckee Meadows communities grew, and Catholic education grew along with them, beginning with parochial grammar schools. Secondary Catholic education in northern Nevada debuted on September 13, 1948, when Bishop Manogue Catholic High School opened its doors for the first time. The campus was located

at the former Flick Ranch, which is near what is now the intersection of East McCarran Boulevard and Mill Street. Within ten years BMCHS had outgrown the property and

relocated in the fall of 1957 to its second campus site, “The School On The Hill,” adjacent to the University of Nevada. Bishop Manogue traditions continued to thrive and grow through the spring of 2004.

Together, the two earlier campuses graduated over 4,300 students. In the late 1990s, a dedicated and ambitious group of northern Nevadans, many of them alumni, began the effort

which culminated in the fall of 2004 with the opening of the third Bishop Manogue campus in south Reno. These visionaries rallied the support of generous philanthropists, as well as literally hundreds of individual donors, to create the state-of-the-

art campus located on S. Virginina street. Here the BMCHS family—students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni, are proud to provide a Bishop Manogue education to new generations.

THE BISHOP MANOGUE LEGACY:

PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

The BMCHS Spire, first raised atop Christ the Teacher Chapel on October 9, 1958 is a 5 ton steel superstructure, wrapped in copper which stands 80 feet tall. After 30 years in place, a violent windstorm toppled it in December, 1988. It was re-erected after repairs in 1989. In the fall of 2003, the steeple was relocated to the new campus where it sits atop the new Christ the Teacher Chapel.

He was also an adjunct faculty member in the Physical Education Department teaching Weights, Conditioning and Racquetball.

Jaureguito returned to the University of Nevada, Reno and as an assistant offensive line coach for the spring of 1985, the season of 1986, and the spring of 1987. He was hired in the late spring of 1987 at South Tahoe High School (STHS) as an English and Physical Education instructor and was the head football coach. Jaureguito was Chairman of the Physical Education Department for two years and then moved into the Counseling Department in 1994. While living at Lake Tahoe, he was a member of the adjunct faculty at Lake Tahoe Community College in the Physical Education Department. Jaureguito was also the Head Girls’ Basketball coach during his last six years at STHS. He was honored as the State “AAA” Football Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1991.

The intention was to take a group of high school sophomores and teach them about government, education, volunteerism, business and how to think not what to think. More than 355,000 people have attended HOBY conferences.

Gonzalez stated, “I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend the state HOBY conference in Las Vegas.” At the four day conference, he was able to meet other high school sophomores from the state of Nevada and participated in many activities. Gonzalez felt “it was truly an amazing experience.” At the end of the state conference, one boy and one girl is chosen to attend the HOBY world leadership conference in Washington D.C. The selection is based on written essays and interviews and Gonzalez was chosen to attend. He was able to listen and talk to the leaders and people who impact lives such as: Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings and former Under Secretary General of the United Nations, Giandomenico Picco.

Expenditures & Revenue

Expenditures and Revenue ReportBishop Manogue Catholic High School is not supported with public funds. The principal source of revenue is tuition. Like the vast majority of Catholic secondary schools across the nation, tuition itself does not cover all costs. In the year 2000, for example, tuition at Catholic high schools in the U.S. averaged 78% of the necessary operating revenue. In 2007-2008 at Bishop Manogue, tuition will represent approximately 76% of revenue.

The pie chart presented on the following page portrays actual expenditures last year and anticipated revenue this academic year. These numbers are based on 680 students enrolled.

Below are the expected revenues for the 2007-2008 fiscal year and are based on 680 students enrolled.

The Bishop Manogue Parents Association held their annual

Basque Dinner on Saturday March 31, 2007. This annual event attracted nearly 400 people. Bishop Manogue parents, alumni and friends attend the fundraiser. Guests were treated to a traditional Basque Dinner prepared by the Reno Basque Club and young Basque dancers entertained the guests with two traditional dances.

Both a silent auction and live auction were part of the evening’s festivities. The most sought after item in the live auction was the package that included preferred seating at the Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation. The event also included a raffle with prizes of $1,000, $500 and a Basque gift basket. Charlotte Sullivan, mother of a Manogue student, chaired the event. Over seventy parents volunteered their time and energy to make this event so successful. Nearly $100,000 was raised this

year at the Basque Dinner which will support the teachers’ grant requests for items including books, videos, microphones, and musical instruments.

The 2008 Basque Dinner is scheduled for January 26th.

AcademicAssemblyBishop Manogue hosted its first Academic Awards

Assembly on the evening of June 6, 2007. Students were recognized for maintaining cumulative grade point averages above 3.5, receiving scholarships, and for outstanding performances in specific classes. More than 200 students were honored at the event.

May 27, 2007

Dear Friends,

I just wanted to tell you how much your support has meant to me and my entire family. Our family has been here from Southern California and they have witnessed daily the kindness of my friends. There are no words to describe how the daily prayers and acts of kindness (large and small) have lifted us up and helped us to get through the past few weeks. Although the devastation from the fire has been huge, let me share with you a few of the amazing miracles that have surrounded us at this time:

On the night of the fire my son Shane was asleep in bed at 9:30. The amazing thing is this: Shane never goes to sleep before 11:30, usually hanging out with the neighborhood teens, in front of the house or garage area, shooting hoops or just talking. The garage is where the explosion occurred. The morning after the fire, the only thing left on the wall in Shane’s bedroom, the room closest to the fire, was a wood cross given to him by his grandparents when he was seven years old.

On the night of the fire, as my husband and son slept (and yes, my son slept through an explosion that rocked the house) I was awake and ridiculously, but thankfully, working on scrap booking gifts for a group of teenage girls I have been working with for the past two years. That night, being awake was an important thing.

In the days following the fire we have found numerous miracles in and around our home: Three cars in the garage were completely burned. Found by my older son the morning after the fire, was a piece of paper scorched, sitting in the front seat of the suburban that read, “There is a God. Congratulations!” It appears that the page was from a book given to my daughter when she was in high school. It had been boxed in a container, in a closed cupboard in the garage, and on that page someone had written, “Kristin, when you reach the stars, say a prayer for me.” Kristin was on her way home from Iraq the afternoon of what would

later be called “the night of the fire.” She and her husband are on their way from North Carolina to Reno, and will be safely home with us tonight. The cross and Palm Sunday palms that graced the entry of our home were found scorched but unbroken in the entry way.

In one of the bedrooms, a cross and Christmas-card framed photo of our son Shane with our four foster care children, remained the only things hanging on the walls that, among other things, had held 24 framed photos of the foster care siblings who have lived with us and been a part of our family for the past ten years.

Holy water from Lourdes, France, brought back myself from World Youth Day ’97, was found sitting on my dresser in a soft plastic container, intact, while the wood jewelry box next to it was destroyed.

Little inspirational books from my coffee table were left open to passages that said the following things, “Never give up, this may be your moment for a miracle,” “…in the darkest hour the soul is replenished and given strength to continue and endure,” “…smile and life smiles back,” “…think about the best thing that happened today,” “…the grass may be greener on the other side, but it still has to be mowed,” “…it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness,” “…it must have been a miracle,” “…Then another said, I’m ready to follow you Master, but first excuse me while I get things straightened out at home.” Jesus said, “No procrastinations. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.” – Luke 9:61-62” As we have worked

to salvage “things” from the house, every day there have been the discovery of treasures; roses and yellow flowers blooming in yard amidst the destruction of the fire, undamaged gifts from a dear friend now deceased, rubber stamps that say things like, “uh oh!” or “hang in there,” and, in my own handwriting, a small dry erase board that said, “I am having an unbelievably great day!”

At the beginning of the year I had joked about this being the year for me to be in solidarity with people in chronic pain, after I got braces in December and then fell and… fractured my butt…playing volleyball in January. It has become even more a fact of reality as I try to salvage a home that held memories of marriage, 3 children and 5 foster care children over the course of 27 years. I realized how blessed I am to have walls left; there are those from 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina who lost not only there walls, but were unable to salvage any of their belongings, and more importantly, lost people they loved. Looking through the charred roof embers at the moon a few nights ago, it brought to my mind the memorial sculpture at Dachau prison camp in Germany. Having been to World Youth Day ’05 in Germany I was able to spend time at Dachau, and again, I am reminded of devastating losses, mine paling in comparison. So, am I blessed? Am I lucky? Yes, I most certainly am. Something salvaged after the fire were a few words I jotted down on a piece of paper:

Peace It does not mean to be

In a place where there is No noise, trouble, or hard work.

It means to be in the midst of those things And still be calm in your heart.

So, thank you, so dearly, seriously, for every kind thought, prayer, word and deed. Every beautiful card, with every kind word, is so specially treasured! Thank you so much.

I love you all,

Colleen

A fire destroyed the home of one of our Bishop Manogue family members. The Wozniak family house will have to be totally torn down and rebuilt. The fire was a result of a small vapor explosion in the garage in May. Colleen Wozniak said “we are so thankful for the generosity of the Manogue family and the Miracle Minute.” After the tragedy the Manogue community, Renown Medical Center, and Our Lady of Snows church provided emergency belongings, uniforms, and a month’s worth of meals to help the Wozniak family through the first several weeks after the fire. While social justice and actively giving to others has been a way of life for the Wozniak family, it has been a humbling new experience to now be in a position of receiving help from others. Continuing a ten year family tradition, Shane and Colleen will be traveling (with other teens and mentors) to Mexico to build houses for the poor on July 28th through August 3rd. The Wozniak family has also been able to continue to share and donate goods to a family in need whose husband and father is a co-worker of Mrs. Wozniak’s at Renown Medical center.

The following is a letter that Mrs. Wozniak sent to the Bishop Manogue family:

Annual A

ppeal

Annual AppealThe Annual Appeal at Bishop Manogue Catholic High School (BMCHS) is an important fundraising vehicle as it supports the school’s annual operating budget. A gift to the Annual Appeal is generally a direct gift of cash or a pledge contribution over the school year. The school receives no operational funding from the government so we look to our extended family of parents, alumni, and friends to cover the difference between the cost of running the school and the income received through tuition. The goal of the Annual Appeal is to obtain unrestricted funds to benefit all students at BMCHS. The Annual

Appeal improves the quality of education offered to its students.

Your gift to the Annual Appeal will help the school retain its outstanding faculty, be a faith donation to your belief in Catholic education, maintain and improve school curriculum and facilities, provide instructional materials and support services, and support tuition assistance funds for our families. A gift to the Annual Appeal ensures that the standard of excellence in teaching and learning is continued at BMCHS.

BMCHS has relied on the generosity of its alumni, parents, and friends

to support the important work of the school. Graduates from BMCHS make a mark on the world through leadership, achievement, and service–skills learned as part of their experience at BMCHS. We are appreciative to all who give so generously. You may designate the use of your gift or make your contribution as a gift with no restrictions. Unrestricted gifts are important because they allow BMCHS to direct the funds where they are needed the most and have the greatest impact. When you support BMCHS know that every gift is important and every gift makes a difference in the lives of our students and faculty.

Service

This past summer twenty four students from BMCHS

went to New Orleans to help rebuild, after nearly two

years since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. I was

one of those students. We went with the National Relief

Network and also did work with Habitat for Humanity.

We worked on a house in Plaquemine’s Parish that needed work

done on the roof, front deck, and side walls. We also went to

a baseball park, an important part of the community before the

hurricane hit, where we helped by picking up trash and cleaning

and repainting bathroom floors to get ready for a tournament. Our

entire group went to work in the Upper Ninth Ward in Musicians

Village. Musicians Village, started by Habitat for housing of current

or past musicians of New Orleans, made it their goal to keep

and restore the music of the area. There were seven houses

being constructed at the same time with about two hundred

volunteers working together. On our last day of work there was

a wall raising ceremony with media crews, volunteers, and new

homeowners. The director of Habitat led each group in raising the

front wall of all seven homes being worked on; they did a wall

raising “wave”. It was a very cool thing to experience. We even got

to meet one of the families that would live in one of the houses.

The parents were Jerreau Fournett and Rosalie Miranda and they

had two young sons. He is a member of the well-known Hot 8

Brass Band. Jerreau spoke to us and didn’t really have any other

words to say to us than, “Thank ya’ll, thank ya’ll, thank ya’ll”.

Outside of the hard work we did do some extra activities including

a drive through the 9th Ward and an explanation of where the

levee broke. This was really hard for me. We saw driveways leading

to nothing or three little cement steps leading up to a

porch, with nothing on the other side. On the houses that hadn’t been demolished, the National Guard spray-painted signs on the front of the house saying what they had found inside – they were a wreck. Another day we went to Chalmette Battlefield and had some time to reflect and write in our journals. After going to the battlefield that day,

we went back to our dorms and we

had a visitor. She lived in Plaquemine’s Parish during

the hurricane and told us of her experiences. Seeing her view

of what happened really showed us a more personal view of

what went on during Katrina. Just hearing her stories hit me

hard, but when she showed us her pictures, it made it even

harder. They were so devastating to see, and the fact that a

natural disaster could happen anywhere just made us think,

“That could have been me. That could have been my house.”

Looking back, the work that we did was amazing, but I know that

I’m not the only one that feels like I still didn’t do enough. Even

though I gave my hardest everyday and worked my heart out, there

is still so much to be done. I feel somewhat empty inside because

I know how much the people need, and yet, some aren’t getting

any help at all. Everyone we talked to was so grateful for what

we were. People were just saying thank you over and over again

because those were the only words they could find within them.

For me, this trip was an incredible experience and I wouldn’t give

it up for the world. The memories that we made are priceless

and I would go back tomorrow and do it all over again if I could.

The people of the South that were devastated by Hurricane

Katrina need our continued love and support. We are all thankful

that we had an opportunity to show them that the Bishop

Manogue community cares about them. We would like to thank

all those in our community that supported this trip financially

and in prayer, especially the Bishop Manogue Parent’s Club.

On June 11, 2007 twenty-one students and six adults from Bishop Manogue Catholic High School left Reno, Nevada and headed for Tijuana, Mexico. This group, led by the Campus Ministry department of BMCHS, joined Amor Ministries, a non-profit group out of San Diego, to build homes for two needy families in Tijuana, Mexico. Both families had seven people living in a one-room house. Students created both new houses literally from zero, starting with creating the cement foundation, all the way to tarring the roof and stuccoing the walls. The houses were two-room structures approximately 200 sq. feet in size. The new construction will give the families a safe and solid place to live. When the group was not building, they were camping at Amor’s gated campground. There was no running water or electricity. This helped the group to live in solidarity with the people they were building for. Evenings for the group were spent learning about Catholic social teaching and about how to combat poverty at home as well as abroad. The response from the students and adults was overwhelmingly positively, with some calling it a life-changing experience.

The trip would not have been possible if it were not for the Bishop Manogue Parent’s Club, and other generous donors.

Service Trips

One student who attended the trip had this to add…

The trip turned out to be the most rewarding experience in m

y life. We came together and

worked hard for families that truly needed the help. When we finished the two houses there

was an amazing sense of accomplishment and the families could not have been more grateful.

This was really an eye-opening experience. There is so much poverty in that ar

The Manogue alumni relations department recently announced the introduction of a new organization, the BMCHS Young Alumni Association. This new club will offer younger graduates, (who have graduated within ten years of the current academic year), an opportunity to network, and reconnect.

Kerry Colburn-Day (’02) has been named president of the new organization and plans a kick-off tailgater event prior to the October 13 BMCHS Homecoming football game this fall.

“The Manogue community doesn’t just end when you graduate,” Colburn-Day said. “The school has been a very important part of my life, and I’m looking forward to finally having an outlet to celebrate the school again with old friends.”

Additional information regarding the BMCHS Young Alumni Association will be distributed by mail to qualifying alums later this summer. To get involved, or request additional information contact the BMHS Alumni Department at (775) 336-6016.

Manogue Announces New Club: BMHS Young Alumni Association

Many Bishop Manogue graduates and students would agree that Manogue is more than just a school — it’s a family. And, it doesn’t matter if you’re currently enrolled, or an accomplished graduate, that family atmosphere and sense of community always remains somewhere within you.

When Patrick C. Egan, ’72, graduated, he made the decision to incorporate the values Manogue had taught him into his life and career. Not only did he send his four children through Manogue, but two of them, Brian and Paddy Egan, eventually joined him in business at Egan Commercial Real Estate, taking the family atmosphere to the next level.

“Going into business with my dad and brother seemed only natural,” Brian Egan, ’94, said. “Family is our priority, and we are lucky have the opportunity to do business together.”

After graduating from Manogue, Brian continued his Catholic education at the University of San Diego (USD) where he earned his Bachelor of Science in business administration in 1998.

Paddy, ’98, says that one of the most valuable lessons he learned at Manogue is

the importance of giving back to the community. He is actively involved at his local church and enjoys being part of the rejuvenation of downtown Reno, both professionally and personally.

Following that same tradition, Brian is in the process of starting a USD scholarship fund which will give financial support to deserving potential students who desire a higher education degree from the Catholic university, but might not have been able to afford it.

“Manogue and USD have been very important to me in my life,” Brian said. “My hope is that I can provide the same experiences for others while they also earn an outstanding education.”

Both Brian and Paddy are Certified Commercial Investment Members (CCIM), designating them as experts in the commercial and investment real estate industry.

As a true family business, and proud Manogue Alumni, Eagan Commercial Real Estate is working hard to be productive in the Reno community with a focus on multifamily, investment, land, industrial, office and retail property. Their office is located at 464 South Sierra Street at the corner of California Avenue and you can contact Pat, Brian or Paddy directly by calling (775) 284-4444.

FRESHMAN RETREATThe Freshman Retreat builds community among the freshman class and introduces the students to the school philosophy. Campus Ministry plans a day off campus so students can participate in team-building games and activities, small group discussions, and prayer. The retreat is a fun and important part of freshmen orientation and builds friendships that last throughout high school.

QUESTThe Quest Retreat, a voluntary retreat offered to freshmen and sophomores, is an overnight program held two times per year at a nearby forest camp. Students who have experienced a Quest Retreat are trained to lead their peers and share their insights. Administrators, faculty, and parents attend and participate along with students in the Quest Retreat.

SODALITY This Christian Social Service Organization have been a part of the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School experience for generations. Sodality is open

to young women who wish to serve the school and the community through participation in food and toy drives, school masses, and many other activities.

KAIROSKairos, a retreat program utilized by many Catholic high schools throughout the country. Our sister high school, Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, brought its experienced student leaders and advisors to Reno for the first Bishop Manogue Kairos in 2001. A beautiful retreat center on the east shore of Lake Tahoe has become home to Bishop Manogue Kairos. Now held three times per year, the waiting list of juniors and seniors applying to attend is always full, and students who have attended a previous Kairos retreat clamor for the opportunity to lead their peers. Applications are accepted and evaluated by the Campus Minster and Chaplain.

The spiritual growth and well-being of the student body,

Catholic as well as non-Catholic, is a prime concern of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. Religious education encompasses all aspects of school life, as whatever is done for the

advancement of human civilization and culture is part of the building of the Body of Christ.

To allow a few moments for reflection and thanksgiving, each school day begins and ends with school-wide

prayer. Academic and religious studies classes begin their class work with prayer as well. Freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes celebrate Eucharistic liturgies, as a class, regularly. Thanks to the generous support of our neighbors, St. Rose of Lima Parish, all-school services are celebrated in their beautiful sanctuary.

Campus liturgies and retreats are tailored to the students, providing opportunities to deepen their understanding of themselves as humans and believers. Because of the support of administrators, faculty, alumni, and parents, these aspects of the Bishop Manogue Catholic High School experience not only enrich the students, but also bless our entire community.

Bishop Manogue continues preparation for our next academic

year. Mr. Jim Toner enthusiastically has embraced the role of interim president, as I’m sure you’ll read from him in this publication. How blessed we are to have him take on this position as a strong financial foundation continues to be built for our school and its future! We are also fortunate to have alum Mr. Tim Jaureguito, former assistant principal and dean of discipline, as our new principal. Tim brings a wealth of experience and high standards for the academic leadership of our school. Some other important changes for next year include: Mr. Matt Schambari, formerly Director of Campus Ministry, as our new Dean of Student Activities, directing student discipline and events; Ms. Telsche Saunders as our Director of Campus Ministry, joined

by Mr. Josh Dirk; and newly ordained Fr. Mark Hanifan as Bishop Manogue chaplain. These are wonderful changes and additions. I have no doubt that, working with our dedicated team of other administrators and faculty, these good folks will make for a superb 2007-08 school year!

As you may know, I concluded my interim-presidency and accepted a new assignment as pastor of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church and School in Carson City. While saying good-bye as “pastor” to the Bishop Manogue family won’t be easy, I am excited by the new challenges and possibilities ahead of me at St. Teresa. As I leave, I recall that I first came to Bishop Manogue Catholic High School as chaplain to establish a Campus Ministry program. My assignment was for a two-year

period. That turned out to be nine years, during which Campus Ministry has grown, through the good work of many, to include nine annual retreats, regular liturgies and strong spiritual guidance to our school. I am proud to have been a part of it!

As an alumnus, it has been an honor to serve both in the capacity as chaplain and, for the past six months, as interim-president. Bishop Manogue Catholic High School will surely remain a part of my life and ministry. I look forward to seeing it grow and change. I urge your continued support and I pray God’s blessings upon you all!

Peace,

Fr. Chuck Durante

Bishop Manogue Catholic High School alumnus and doctoral

student Kristina Dulcey-Wang, M.A. ’99 is conducting a study with children ages 8-14 on siblings of childhood cancer patients through Alliant International University. She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University in San Diego, California.

Dulcey-Wang began pursuing her doctorate last year. She has found that children who have siblings with cancer misunderstand the disease. Children often think they can’t hug or touch their siblings because the disease is contagious. Dulcey-Wang said, “helping children work though the feelings and understand that they can still love and hug their siblings is gratifying.”

Dulcey-Wang has also found that siblings of childhood cancer patients often want to

hurt themselves believing that is how they can receive the attention of their parents. One example that affected Kristina is from A Parent’s Guide to Solid Tumors by Honna Janes-Hodder and Nancy Keene which reads, “Our nine year old son seemed to be dealing with things so well until one evening as I was tucking him in he confided in me that he had tried to break his leg at school by jumping out of the swing. He began to cry and told me that he doesn’t want his brother to be sick anymore; that he needs some attention, too. I was always so concerned with our sick child that I didn’t realize how much our healthy child was suffering.” This statement and having been through many traumatic life experiences has Dulcey-Wang researching how cancer impacts the entire family—including healthy children.

Participation in the study starts with an online questionnaire and brief interview and includes a one-on-one interview for

the children. For parents, the benefits are receiving feedback on how your child is coping with having a sibling with cancer. Participation in the study also gives children the opportunity to discuss their feelings in a friendly environment. She feels that participating in the study makes a difference in the lives of the children and family that last a lifetime.

Bishop Manogue’s Junior Senior Prom was held April 28, 2007. The students were nothing short of amazed by the transformation of the gym into a 1940s themed dance and dinner hall. The Reno Big Band, a seventeen-piece big band, serenaded attendees with 1940s music during dinner. The DJ followed with dance music and the kids danced the night away. Prom King and Queen were crowned before the evening was over. Craig Batory was crowned King and Agnes Asmar was crowned Queen.

A Magical 1940s Evening

When The Diary of Anne Frank opened on Broadway in 1955, it received many awards including the Pulitzer Prize. It has stood the test of time and remains a superbly crafted play about the tragedy of intolerance and racism; a powerful lesson that must never be forgotten.

God inspired some terrific parents, students and faculty to jump in and make this show happen at Bishop Manogue. With their help, a set based on the original Broadway production was built and loaded into

the auxiliary gym. It was supported on raised stage platforms designed to be re-used for future productions. Loans and donations came through for lights, curtain material, props, furniture and costumes. And then, students came together to form a top-notch cast.

After an absence of theater production, Bishop Manogue was raising the curtain. The cast of ten began rehearsing in mid-February. Cast members included Kierra Persing as Margot Frank, Jacqueline Weinland as Mrs. Frank, Jonathan

Moore as Mr. Van Daan, Meghan Kirwin as Mrs. Van Daan, Michael Mazurowski as Peter Van Daan, Allison Sharpe as Anne, and Paul Hergot as Mr. Frank.

The house was packed on opening night; the energy was crackling. It was my prayer that the cast might experience a taste of what professional theater is really like. And on many levels, we achieved this—much to the delight and admiration of the audience. But we still have a long way to go.

Manogue’s Safe ‘n Sober Grad Night was a tremendous success. All, from the “well-dressed” chaperones to the 110 graduates, enjoyed the “mayhem and madness” pirate themed event. The Safe ‘n Sober Committee would like to say thank you to all the volunteers who worked on this great event. A special thank you goes to Denise Stader and Ozburn-Hessey Logistics for the use of their site on such short notice. The Committee would also like to thank the following companies and individuals for their generous donations:
