The Codorus Blast 2015 is now

in the record books. The rain on

Saturday evening forced the

postponement of the fireworks

until Sunday evening, and the

heavy rain overnight on Saturday

made the parking area too wet to

use, so most of the Sunday

activities had to be cancelled! Despite the weather,

attendance was still great! Thanks go to all the nonprofit

groups, vendors, presenters, and volunteers. This event

takes months to plan, and there are many individuals and

groups who helped. Among them: local fire companies

provided activities and support. The PA Rangers

Equestrian group had a display. Guthrie Library provided

materials for children’s crafts. York County Emergency

Management Team also provided EMS support, which was

needed when a baby decided to be born early! Outcast

Bass Club provided fishing instruction. Matt VonSas of

VonSas lighting provided towing service out of the muddy

field on Saturday. Park staff and volunteers provided set-up

and clean-up , as well as taking

care of many other details.

Planning for 2016 is already

underway. Watch for further

information, and let’s hope for

perfect weather!

published 4 times per year.

BLAST MEMBERS’ PICNIC Our annual summer picnic was held on June 9 at the Classroom Building. There were 54 people, including many members of the PA Rangers. Little Everett’s BBQ provided the delicious meat. Carl Grubb made ice cream. Members brought covered dishes to share, and there was plenty of food for everyone!

Happy summer to everyone. Well the Codorus Blast and 4th of July are over. The Blast was only a day and a half event and the 4th of July rained all day. The Blast still had some good events like the great band Pentagon; lots of kayakers and lots of good food. Because of the rain we shot the fireworks on Sunday night. Lots of park visitors enjoyed them. I want to thank all of the volunteers who

helped with the Blast. In all the years I have worked with the Blast, this was the best for volunteer help. Then we got ready for the next event; the 50th year celebration for the park on August 8th at the park office from 3:00 pm – 8:00pm. The next big thank you goes out to the Friends Group for helping with many repairs to the park. With limited budget, it’s great to have your extra support to get projects done in the park.

Park Project Update: Contact Station roof – all finished. Beautiful Cedar Shake roof. Gift shop remodeling – Good job Ray, it’s coming along great. New bird blind – Eagle Scout project at the main launch all completed. Still needs a few touch-ups, but looks great. Mill House downstairs fireplace – Looks great and historic. Thank you Friends Group for funding this project. Band Shell drainage work – Great job, maintenance. It’s taking lots of rain water this season. 2 new Eagle Scout projects planned this year – LaHo & MaryAnn hiking trail work. New property – We received the land deed for the Rohrbaugh property. It is now state park land. The new final acreage is 46.69 acres. Just announced: John Norbeck, who had served as director of Bureau of State Parks until 2012, has returned to DCNR as Deputy Secretary for Parks and Forestry. In closing, I’m excited about our Fall program schedule: Chicken Bar-b- q/Vehicle Show and the Halloween in the Park. These programs are going to be great so come on out and enjoy or sign up to volunteer. It has been a wet, hot summer so my staff is behind at mowing and trimming so give the mowing crews a smile when you drive by, they could sure use it. We have finally filled our life guarding staff. This has been a late year for filling all the positions. We also have a new maintenance supervisor: Dan Clark. Congratulations, Dan. Well everyone, enjoy the hot summer days. Hope to see you at the pool, our nature programs, or at the air conditioned office. Thanks again for being Friends of the park. Warren

President’s Message

Our summer season sure is moving along at a fast pace. It seems like the Easter Egg Hunt was just yesterday. Then, there was the Charcoal Burn at the amphitheater which we paid for the Central York Fife & Drum to perform, followed by our Members Picnic at the Classroom Building. Of course, everyone will remember this year’s Blast rainout event. We lost all of Saturday evening, and all of Sunday due to the heavy rains and the muddy parking field that followed. We did manage to get the fireworks display off on Sunday evening after it was postponed from the night before. We are hoping that we can show a small profit, and not a loss, for the event.

The campground was packed 4th of July weekend. We furnished over 400 bowls of ice cream that the Park Chaplaincy Program served at the Ice Cream Social. We also provided hayrides for over 215 campers. We had two tractors and wagons circling through the four campground loops at the same time. Everyone seemed to have a good time, including Warren, Brenda, and their little granddaughter.

I have been very busy with the recycling program in the campground. And I know the firewood and ice sales from the 24/7 shed have been keeping that crew busy trying to keep it filled. The Gift Shop and Outpost stores are now offering eagle T shirts and sweatshirts, along with patches, mugs and bumper stickers. These are great souvenirs for the Eagle Cam enthusiasts.

Our next event will be on Saturday, Sept. 19th. We are having our first annual take out Chicken BBQ and Vehicle Show, which will be located in the area of the pool and pavilions. I am hoping that

our members will support this event by purchasing one of the delicious chicken barbeque meals. Meal tickets are on sale at our Gift Shop and the Outpost Camp Store. Meals can

also be purchased the day of the event. Meals are $10 each. Volunteers are needed for the event. Volunteer Coordinator, Don Eichelberger will be contacting members for help needed.

I appreciate all the help given by our volunteers this year so far, and hope everyone is enjoying the summer as I am. See ya!

A small, but

a b s o l u t e l y ,

essential, group

is the staff of

the Park Office.

The first person

visitors usually

meet is Cindy

Williams, who

works at the front desk. Cindy, who holds a Clerk

Typist II title, has been with the park for 11 years.

Deb Hershey, Administrative Assistant, has been

at Codorus for 15 years, and Pinchot State Park

for 2 years before that. Seasonal employees are

Evelyn Cline and Stacy Lybarger, who have Clerk

Typist I titles. Together, these people do a wide

variety of jobs, such as: answer phone calls, issue

launch permits, complete the boating agreements

for all boats kept in the park, enter payroll, take

care of purchasing, complete personnel

paperwork, take reservations for classroom and

bandshell, type letters of authorization for events,

act as a liaison to other state agencies. And this

is just the tip of the iceberg. Speaking of ice, they

are just as busy in the winter completing

paperwork and preparing for the busy summer

ahead! So next time you go into the Park Office,

be sure to say thank you to them for their

expertise and hard work to keep the park running.


Shirley and Glenn Bankert are living proof that people in motion tend to stay in motion.

You seldom see them sitting, except perhaps when they are enjoying a Lyric Band concert at the Park Bandshell. Most of the time, they are busy in the Park working at the Gift Shop or Outpost, helping with woodcutting, taking care of the flower beds at the Gift Shop, or helping with any and all of the Friends’ events. In addition, they are active with church activities. Glenn is a trustee of the Wildasin Meeting House, which is located on park ground once owned by his greatgrandparents, the Wildasins. Glenn and Shirley once lived along the area now known as Marburg Flats, before it was covered by water. Shirley is glad the park is here now, rather than using the land for building houses. The Bankerts are certainly doing their part to ensure the success of the park for now and for future generations.

Codorus State Park, in addition to providing recreation, also contains a place for honoring the people who have fought to give us the freedoms we cherish. The Veterans’ Memorial Grounds, located on a hill near the Oarhouse, is a place where families can have trees planted in honor and memory of deceased veterans. It includes a pavilion which houses plaques naming the veterans who have been honored there. In 2001, a committee of local veterans’ families, including the Allied Veterans’ Council, and led by Ken Riley and Randy Nehr, requested a place to honor veterans in Hanover. Gov. Ridge suggested Codorus State Park, and the Veterans’ Memorial Grounds at Codorus State Park was begun. The first tree planting ceremony took place on September 15, 2001, just days after the devastation of September 11, and there has been a service and tree planting ceremony every year since.

So far, over 125 veterans have been honored. This year’s ceremony will be held on November 7 at 1:00 pm.

If you are interested in having a veteran honored, the application is available at the Park

Office and the website www.friendsofcodorus.org. Deadline for 2015 is September 30. The building and grounds are currently maintained by

Codorus State Park employees, the Friends of Codorus

State Park, and other volunteers. If you are interested

in helping (mulching, cleaning up, putting out flags for

Memorial Day, Independence Day, Veterans’ Day),

contact Scott Taylor at 451-9467.

TRICK OR TREAT - Campsites were sold out in June.

HAYRIDES - Local businesses and organizations will again be

providing many of the hayride displays. Contact Suzanne Landis at 717-669-2779 if you would like to provide one, or have a lead for a new one.

PET PARADE will be as last year, starting at 11 am at Pavilion

1 with proceeds donated to Animal Rescue, Inc.

CHILDREN’S ACTIVITIES for the campers, are being coordi-

nated by Cadette Troop 20319, Spring Grove, PA, this year. The girls will be earning their Silver Awards with this project so they are to be congratulated!

CANDY DONATIONS ARE NEEDED! Individually wrapped,

unopened bags of candy. Drop off at Park Office during regular hours by Thurs, Oct 22 at 4 pm, OR bring over to the campground to cabin site #127, anytime during set up week.

Codorus State Park has a bike patrolman. He is a popular person in the park. He is able to reach locations that a patrol car could not reach, and get there faster than a ranger on foot. The Friends have helped by purchasing some items to make his job a bit easier, such as special pants that don't get caught in the bike chain. So next time you’re in the park, look for the Bike Ranger and wave hello as he zooms past on his patrol!
