What are the Common Core State Standards? TheCommonCoreStateStandardsare
K–12academicstandardsinmathematicsandEnglishlanguagearts/literacy.
Theyweredevelopedbystates,andstatesvoluntarilychoosetoadoptthem.
Theyarealignedtotheexpectationsoftwo-andfour-yearcollegesandhavebeeninternationallybenchmarked.
TheCommonCorehelpensurecomparabilityacrossstates,districtsandschools,mitigatingchallengeswithstudentandteachermobility.
StandardsareacriticalfirststepinimprovingAmerica’seducationsystem.Theyprovidethenecessaryfoundationforlocaldecisionsaroundcurriculum,assessmentsandinstruction.
Why the Common Core? Tocompeteinaknowledge-basedglobaleconomy,theUnitedStatesmustimprovetheeducationaloutcomesofallstudents.
Consider:
20%ofstudentsenteringfour-yearcolleges,andatleast40%ofstudentsenteringtwo-yearcommunitycolleges,musttakeremedialcourses—relearningattheirexpensewhattheyshouldhavealreadylearnedinhighschool.(National Center for Education Statistics)
62%ofnewjobsavailablein2018willrequiresomepostsecondaryeducation.Withoutadramaticchangeofcourse,U.S.employerswillbeunabletofill3 millionofthesepositions.(Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce)
A2009internationalassessment(PISA)revealedthat15-year-oldstudentsfrommorethan30 countrieswereoutperformingU.S.15-year-oldsinmathematics.Morethan25 countrieshadahigherpercentageofstudentsscoringatthehighestlevelsthanAmerica,meaningevenAmerica’smostadvancedmathstudentswereoutperformedbytheirinternationalcounterparts.
TheCommonCorewillensurethatteachersteachandstudentslearnthe knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow, includingcommunicationsskills,perseveranceinproblemsolving,technicalreadingandwriting,literacyacrossdisciplines,andthemostimportantmathematicalskills.
