Press he 2014 – 2015 school year has had many highlights. Academically, numerous stu- dents have received scholarships for their outstanding performances and we look for- ward to our annual Academic Awards night next fall where we celebrate the outstand- ing achievements of our junior students. Special mention goes to Iain Hutchison who received a scholarship from the Canadian Coast Guard College that exceeds $80,000 and Theresa DeCola who won the prestigious scholarship from the Quinte chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario. In addition, our school continues to perform ex- ceptionally well on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) and the grade nine math EQAO assessment. We also continue to implement our Manufacturing Spe- cialist High Skills Major Program and this year we have five students graduating with a specialist in this area. Student leadership has always been a focus at Bayside and this year was exceptional in this area. The 24 Hours for Hunger committee led by Hailey Proud and Mara Whit- ford raised $23,000 for our local community food banks. This is the first time in my 26 year career that I have seen students raise this much money for their community in one event. Over one third of the school participated in 24 Hours for Hunger; simply outstanding! In addition, our Global Awareness committee raised thousands of dollars for global relief efforts. Not only did our Students’ Council raise thousands of dollars for multiple good causes, they also organized over a dozen special events and activities for our school community. Our Athletic Council organized and ran three major spirit days, intramurals and a very successful athletic banquet. If you read the research on high performing, effective schools, student ownership and student leadership top the list of essential characteristics; doubtless, Bayside has these covered. With regards to Athletics, we had close to three hundred students and over twenty staff participate in our interschool athletics program and over one hundred students com- pete at OFSAA, the highest possible level of high school athletic competition. Special mention goes to the senior girls’ soccer team for winning bronze at OFSAA. This is the first time a girls soccer team from the Bay of Quinte area has won a medal at OFSAA. Also, our junior girls’ rugby team captured the provincial championship for the second year in a row by winning the Barbarian Cup. In my second year as principal of Bayside Secondary School, I find myself very happy and looking forward to year three. I truly enjoy working with the Bayside community. The students are fantastic, the staff is exceptional and our parents are incredibly sup- portive. I consider myself very fortunate to be the principal of such a great school. I hope that you will take time to read about all the successes our students have enjoyed this year. We are extremely proud of all of our students’ accomplishments and it is clear, “The Bayside Experience” is second to none. Book Club News

The 20014/15 school year was a busy year for Bayside’s Red Devils Reading Den members. Junior and Senior branch members enjoyed dis-cussing a selection of YA books they proposed and voted on in September. As well, White Pine titles were part of our lunch hour discussions and students who had read at least five of the ten books were able to vote in April for their top choice, many celebrating as Eve Silver won for her novel, Rush. The highlight of the year was YA author Eric Walters’ visit to Bayside. Mr. Walters spoke to several classes and then did a special presentation for book club members. After, a small group of 25 book club members enjoyed a writing workshop with the author. Mr. Walters inspired our members to write about their ex-periences and to ask questions about what is going on in the world around them.

The Red Devils Reading Den would like to ex-tend best wishes to those book club members who are graduating this year. These students have been with us since grade nine and have made great contributions to our discussions. We hope you will be able to participate in other book club opportunities as you move onto post secondary or workplace opportunities. Congrat-ulations to Savannah Carnrike, Taylor Carnrike, Theresa DeCola, Chantal Lauzon, Jeremy Long, Barb Soules and Katey Townsend! Once again, Bayside ran a variety of nutrition pro-

grammes this year. A breakfast programme en-sured that students received the morning “fuel” necessary for learning. Bagels, toast, waffles, yoghurt and cereal were available before school and at break. The Learning Commons circulation counter was a popular breakfast bar in the morn-ing as students grabbed breakfast and enjoyed an opportunity to socialize. Sandwiches and yo-ghurt were available during the lunch hours and apples from Grills Orchards were a popular snack item throughout the day.

Athletic Council News

The Athletic Council had another fantastic year with an amazing group of students lead by president Georgia Dow. They put on a few spirit days with sport show cas-ings of various teams, funded the new water fountain outside the weight room, planned and implemented three very popular school trips (Winterlude/Senators, Tremblant, Wonderland/Jays), as well as ran several intramural tournaments throughout the year. Most re-cently the AC put together our year end Sports of Sorts Tournament, and year end Athletic Banquet to celebrate our coaches and athletes. The Bayside family had a great representation over multitudes of playing fields and ven-ues over the 2014-15 seasons. In fact too many to men-tion! The spring season highlights are as follows: Junior boys rugby won the Bay of Quinte Championships, junior girls rugby winning the Barbarian Cup, Taylor McCullough finishing top 6 in high jump at OFSAA, 3 OFSAA tennis qualifiers, and the Senior Girls Soccer team taking home the bronze at the OFSAA championships! The major individual award winners were as follows: Ath-letes of the Year - Grade 9 girl Paige O’Gorman, Grade 9 boy Logan Lindsay; Grade 10 girl Leana Bissig, Grade 10 boy(s) Jordan Blackburn and Cameron Hagerman; Grade 11 girl Amy Park, Grade 11 boy Kurtis Wright; Grade 12 girl Mackenzie McCullough, and grade 12 boy Eric Clare. The graduating athlete with the greatest contribution to Bayside athletics over her career went to Victoria Man-ginas. The two females and males with the most con-tribution to the AC and athletic school community went to Georgia Dow, Hayley Davies, Tyson Finch, and Jared Gosson. Lastly, Bayside athletics recognizes two families every year that go above and beyond regular parental du-ties, and those families were the Hannigans & the Mc-Culloughs. Many thanks to the 2014-2015 Athletic Council, be sure to apply in the fall if you’d like to contribute, and be a part of this amazing group! The 2015-2016 AC will be un-der new leadership as Griffin Bastedo & Katharine Her-ron head up the council with Taylor McCullough and Will Watters moving up to the VP positions. Looking forward to another great year, Bayside!

Soccer News

JR GIRLS SOCCERWe had a blast this season! Our junior girls were skilled, gritty, determined, and sassy! A busy pre-season of indoor and outdoor tourneys prepared the girls for the always short but intense spring season. Our captains Galini Manginas and Rosemary Minns thrived as leaders and helped our many grade nines get into their rhythm. The ladies had one hiccup in regular season play, dropping their only loss to ENSS, which forced them to play their rivals STSS in the semifinals. After a scoreless regulation, and an exciting 1-1 extra time, the game was won by penalty shoot out by the bad guys. The girls bounced back at COSSA to win the semi-final, but again were foiled by STSS, losing 1-0 in the final minute of play. Congrats girls on your COSSA silver medals and we hope to be crowned Bay of Quinte champs next year! Congratulations to Tessa and Paige for their beat box in warmups and to Jaya for being the best Red Devil mascot in school his-tory!

SR GIRLS SOCCERHistory was made this season! Following an unde-feated regular season, and a second consecutive COSSA Championship over STSS, the Seniors re-turned to OFSAA for a second straight year. Hop-ing to improve on last year's 3rd place in pool play, the unseeded girls went undefeated in their pool to take top spot and secure a 1/4 game against South-wood of Cambridge. The ladies played some amaz-ing soccer over four days in Wallaceburg, and won their 1/4 final to advance to the Final Four, a first for Bay of Quinte Girls Soccer. Facing the defend-ing champions Bishop Macdonell in the semis, the girls put up a huge fight but could not convert on their chances. In the Bronze Medal game, the la-dies struck three times to build a 3-0 lead and held on for the 3-1 victory, securing the bronze medal for Bayside! What an amazing achievement for this

talented group of players. Special credit goes to our captains, Katherine Herron and Vic

Manginas, for coming together and build-ing something special. Good luck to our graduating players and we look forward to returning to the Championship Final at OFSAA next year in hopes of taking that

elusive Gold Medal!

24 Hours for Hunger

The sounds of growling stomachs echoed through the halls of Bayside Secondary School the evening of Friday, May 29th, and again Sat-urday morning as over 220 students coped with going without food for 24 hours in order to raise money for community food banks. At the 24 Hours for Hunger opening ceremonies, hosted by co-chairs Mara Whitford and Hailey Proud, representatives from various community food organizations spoke about the problem of hun-ger in our community and praised the students for making a difference. In total, $23,000 will be shared with food banks in Trenton, Belleville and Stirling, as well as Bayside’s Food for Learning programme.

Students who participated in the event had lots of fun activities to distract them from their hun-ger. Bayside’s 24 Hour for Hunger committee members organized a scavenger hunt, dance-a-thons, movie marathons, sports in the gymna-sium, nail art, karaoke and more. For those who chose to sleep for at least part of the evening, tent cities were set up in the cafeteria for girls and the English area for boys.

The Wolf Pack team (Summer Moore, Alex Roy, Richard Harris, Cole Goodchild and Paul Beau-rivage) earned the designation “Dream Team” for being the team to raise the most money, while Nick Williams raised the most as an indi-vidual. Their special status earned them a VIP lounge area and special treats at breakfast.

As the smells of breakfast wafted through the halls, participants truly realized what it is like to go without food and they better understood the plight of the unfortunate members of our communities who experience food insecurity. Students certainly realized how lucky they were to be served an amazing feast to break their 24 hour fast.

This event would not have been the fabulous suc-cess it was without the hard work of an amazing 24 Hours for Hunger committee. Co-chairs Hailey Proud and Mara Whitford spent countless hours organizing donations, events, and grocery needs. They were supported by the following committee members: Alex Boyce, Brenden Clarke, Morgan Dodson, Tirzah Fillmore, Breanna Gracie, Autumn McLellan, Morgan McLellan, Kaylea Pham, Mi-chael Terpstra, and Victoria Waterfall, and Dallin Whitford.

AP Renaissance Project ~ ENG3U

Bayside Secondary School continues to be the Advanced Placement leader in the Quinte region! Our students are exploring Arts, Math, English and French. They are thriving in their enriched classes and building university /college skills, such as critical thinking and dedication. Many thanks to our AP teachers who are passionate about their subject areas and their students. Our results from last year’s May AP exams were strong with many students earning university credits while still in high school. Several alumni have let us know that they really appreciate the preparation.

AP students applying to university this year should check the OUAC box for AP in their appli-cations. The next round of AP for Grade 12 stu-dents exams will be in May 2016.

Over the summer, students should be making preparations for the exam. See Guidance to learn more about the AP courses offered at Bayside.

Please check out the website: https://apstudent.collegeboard.org/exploreap

Mr. Reid’s grade eleven AP English students came through again this semester with creative and innovative research projects for their Person-al Renaissance assignment. The students begin by reading a biography of their choice and a con-necting novel. Once they have read the novels and determined a specific area to research, the new learning begins...usually in an area outside of English! Great work team!

Girls’ Rugby

The junior She-Devils started up their season again this spring with the goal of defending their Barbar-ian Cup Provincial title. The girls took their particu-lar talents to locales all across the province and had teams asking to come here and play us to get a taste of the top flight competition this area has to offer. The second season started in Kingston on the cam-pus of Queen’s University with the girls going unde-feated in four games there. The girls then took two split squads to Ottawa and carried on their spring campaign at the University of Ottawa fields. The girls then hosted their own tournament at Mary Anne Sills, which saw only the second blemish on their record this year, then two days later erased any memory of that with a 20 try rout of St Francis Xavier on the Devil Pitch. This left only a two game set at Trenton high where the girls saw off Frontenac and Trenton in style to set up their Barbarian Cup run.

Early on Sunday, June 7, the girls loaded up the bus to head to Fergus in search of provincial glory. They started off the tournament with a re-match of last year’s gold medal game against Trenton and the re-sult was the same with the girls coming away with a 12-5 victory. Their afternoon contests saw them run away with a 43-0 win over St. Francis Xavier and a 30-0 win over Erin District HS. By virtue of their first place finish, the girls got a bye through to the finals on Monday where they would face the winner of the Trenton and Erin Semi-Final. To the surprise of few, the girls were matched again with Trenton in

the final. The girls put forward their best performance of the year and shut the Tigers out 26-0 to run their record to a perfect 5-0 and bring the Barbarian Cup Championship

back to Bayside for the second consecutive year and fourth time

in ten years!

Understanding the role of a school board trusteeThis is the fourth in a series of articles about school board trustees. A different article will be featured each month.

DID YOU KNOW . . . that a key responsibility of any school board is to develop and adopt policies that reflect the board’s purpose and goals, and provide the framework for implementing the system plan?At Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board, trustees regularly review policies to ensure they are up to date and relevant. All HPEDSB policies can be accessed online at www.HPEschools.ca. School boards recognize that the public trust placed in them as a collective body is honoured through determining and enforcing norms of acceptable behavior. Having a code of conduct for school board members is an effective and essential governance practice which promotes public confidence and enhances the effectiveness of the board. The HPEDSB Code of Conduct was developed collaboratively by all board members. It is intended to provide common understanding about how to facilitate the work of Board members with appropriate authority and integrity and, thereby promote public confidence.

TRUSTEES FOR 2014 - 2018Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board is proud to have the following trustees: Dwayne Inch, South Prince Edward County & Chair of the Board; Lucille Kyle, North Hastings & Vice-Chair of the Board; Tom Biniaris, Trenton & CFB Trenton; Mike Brant, Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte; Justin Bray, Southeast Hastings; Jennifer Cobb, North Prince Edward County; Bonnie Danes, Centre Hastings; Mary Hall, Belleville & Thurlow; Dave Patterson, Belleville & Thurlow; Jim Williams, Frankford & Sidney. As a member of the board, an individual trustee is expected to act within the board’s by-laws, be loyal to the board’s decisions and abide by the Code of Conduct. As elected persons, trustees are also expected to advocate for the interests of their constituencies.

STUDENT TRUSTEES FOR THE 2014-2015 SCHOOL YEARHastings and Prince Edward District School Board also has two student trustees who represent the interests of the student body at meetings of the board. They are not members of the board and are not entitled to exercise a binding vote but they have the same opportunities for participation at meetings of the board. The 2014-2015 Student Trustees are: Cameron Barry, Centre Hastings Secondary School and Alyssa Mifflin, Centennial Secondary School. We would like to thank each of our Co-op placements for their commitment to Bayside. We are always im-pressed with the outstanding support we receive from our community of employers. They play a key role in developing the talents and abilities of our students in the workplace. In return, Bayside students work hard to meet expectations and to demonstrate their grow-ing skills and knowledge. Many also attend college one day a week in dual credit programmes to experi-ence the college environment and to train in areas related to their co-op experience. Each semester Co-op students showcase what they have learned to the whole school by creating displays and presentations for our Career Fair.

This semester we had some outstanding displays. The following businesses provided placements, train-ing and support for Bayside Co-op students! Thank you for being our partners in workplace education!
